G3 G3 Disintegrating Hair Syndrome

G3 Disintegrating Hair Syndrome

It's been known for a long time now that certain G3 ponies are prone to what I've been referring to as "Disintegrating Hair Syndrome."

1. What does this look like?
2. Why is this happening?
3. What ponies does this affect?
4. What other ponies have been reported?
5. Full text list of reported ponies
5. How can I help??

1. What does this look like?

.....and eventually....

It's as simple as that. With so much as barely a touch, the hair breaks off and disintegrates.
This isn't a few loose strands--this hair breaks so easily that you don't even feel it breaking when it happens.
It requires pretty much no effort, it just all but turns to dust. As you can see above, it's just the tinsel that gets left behind if there is any.

Sadly, there is no cure for Disintegrating Hair Syndrome. Once the hair has started to fall apart, it's too late. :(

At that point, re-hairing is your only option.

Some may choose to leave their DHS-prone ponies without brushing and to display them however they look. Be aware though that
as soon as you move a pony that has DHS, or pack or ship it, or if it falls over, or if a breeze from an open window blows too hard,
the pony is still going to lose its hair eventually.

2. Why is this happening? :sadpony:

There are theories but no one knows for sure. It is unlikely to be the glue, since the hair disintegrates all over, not just detaching from where it's sewn into the head. Because it tends to affect certain ponies more than others, most seem to think it's just a poor quality of the hair used on those models deteriorating over time. It may or may not be worsened by sun exposure.

3. What ponies does this affect? :surprisepony:

Disintegrating Hair Syndrome is mostly found in certain sets of ponies, such as discount chains and AVON exclusives, but has been reported in others outside of these sets.

NOTE: NOT every single pony
(every single Autumn Crisp, for example)
will have this problem.

as far as i'm aware there is no comprehensive g3 hair color guide, but there is a partial one here based on dollyhair's colors, but it should be fairly easy to figure it out for other doll hair shops. it looks like @Quackers has taken on a g3 matching guide based on his recent thread, so perhaps he can be of some help here. given how widespread this disintegrating hair issue is becoming a broader guide would surely be helpful :sadpony:

thank you for the link to the dollyhair guide!! i'll put it in the OP of my thread!
i just ordered some new hair from shimmerlocks, hqg1c, and acquired some new G3s actually so maybe i'll finally get around to some photos this weekend XD ah, busy busy with holidays... x_x;;

if anyone would like to volunteer some known matches (between G3s, between G1s and G3s, or between G3s and loose hair) please post on my thread (linked above)! photos are much appreciated but not required ^^; i'll take anything i can get for now lol

the first stripe of a twinkle twirl bubble bath topper i got recently is crumbling... does she have this same disintegrating hair problem? it has a bit of a creamy texture.

looks like she could. i noticed that my cherry blossom topper's hair comes out pretty easily with a small tug and though i'm not sure if that could be the same thing- it's not disintegrating, but it's still very sensitive to touch so i try not to touch it if i can help it :p

I have the bubble bath toppers and I noticed that a few years ago, I forgot to mention it here. XD definitely have the same problem
neat, okay!

Hi all! I just found this forum and this post in particular because I am cleaning my old pony collection (mom smoked inside growing up so they all need a deep clean) and was wondering what happened to my pony, so I'm glad to have found an answer!! It's Blossomforth from the Wing Wishes line. Spring Fever, who came with her, seems fine, but Spring Fever was still in her original box. I'll look out for any more that this happens to as I work through cleaning the rest of my collection and post them here if I find any more. I have about 1.5 more boxes to go. The second I put Blossomforth in the water, all of her hair came out.

Nah probably not, I have a lot of ponies so one (so far) having this issues isn't a big deal to me. I'll probably keep her as is for now and turn her into a biker pony, make it look intentional or something rofl. I think my long hair ponies also have this issue because a LOT of hair falls out when I brush them, but luckily it isn't as bad as this one.

Blossom forth isn't here anymore. Call me Cue Ball.

I'm sorry it happened to your pony though, that really sucks. :(

It is such a shame that they used plastics that deteriorated so badly. I'm not sure how they could know exactly, or if they did whether they'd care, but ugh, wasteful! Always try to keep pony hair out of the drain, folks! Flocking particulates, too, for that matter.

A lesson in having to explain to your plumber, why your drain looks like you tried to shave circus clowns in the sink.

it's a bummer to me too- but it comforts me knowing they're rehairable :) even if doing so requires a bunch of elbow grease. i'd like to take on rehairing fakies so i have some practice for when the real thing needs it... im saying if G3 were to have anything commonly lesser quality within its line, i'm glad its hair & not... large instances of pony cancer, age spots & regrind. among other things

Yes this!! I'll take the problems I know I can fix, any day.

Good warning/reminder about hair/flock down the drain! I use a coffee filter and hair filter to catch everything

Update on day 2 of washing my ponies, my Petal Blossom (who was a super long haired pony packaged with Flower Flash) is definitely affected. I remember always having an issue with her hair being frizzy. When brushing her mane (tail isn't affected as badly, but still is very frizzy) instead of resisting when I came across a tangle, the tangle just came right off. So her hair is very thin now. Included a picture of her next to Silly Sunshine, who did not come with a baby pony and did not have the same issue.

That's dreadful! I have to wonder if they started using some kind of product on some hair fibers in the factory that degraded them over time? I sure hope this is an isolated trend...
