NOTE 12/12/23: unfortunately i have to put this project on indefinite hiatus; i don't have the space to house lots of G3s at the moment nor the physical health for organization/photography/etc.

oh no... but also, oh YES... for i am opening the pandora's box of making a hair color matching guide for G3s! O_O
there is a decent amount of information on matching for G1 ponies, so my game plan is to build off of that for matching G3s! so if you have a G1 collection, a G3 collection, and/or loose hair for rerooting ponies, i'd love some help! :lolpony:
  • where do you buy your pony hair from? nylon sellers i'm aware of are shimmerlocks, the doll planet, restoredoll, retrodoll, custompony, dollyhair; please comment with more that you know of, especially if they have confirmed G1/G3 matches!
  • what G3s/G1s/hanks do you have for matching? if you can find matches in your collection with pictures, that would be awesome! if you even have some "close but not quite," that would still be appreciated!
  • anything else you know (or want to know), drop a post! including existing matching guides/info, because i don't have an account on the arena and i'm not super active on social media, so i might've missed something useful!
as for me, i'm going to get started on a spreadsheet as well as scouring my personal collection :surprisepony: and probably take up all the space on my phone with horse pictures...

I believe there are some guides posted or in progress in the help tutorials section… there have been several theads on the subject.
 
I admire your ambition, although that feels a bit like telling Sisyphus "nice rock" :winkpony:
I've catalogued almost all the G3s' hair colours against each other, and I have a modest supply of nylon hair, mainly from Shimmerlocks and Dollyverse. If you get stuck, want a second opinion, need to scream, etc, feel free to drop me a line and I'll do my best to help out. Good luck! :blueheart:
 
i have a couple of matches in my collection! my first pass was in indoor overhead lighting and the second was with only natural light (from a window) in the morning-afternoon. i plan on checking camera flash when i take my photos!

a match is pretty much indistinguishable to me, “very close” is not exact but what i would consider a suitable replacement, “slightly off” means it’s close in shade or hue but wouldn’t work; i’m noting all the non-matches so that i can remember what they are for photographs lol

other important notes:
* (SL) is Shimmerlocks.com, i'm matching with loose nylon hair i've bought from them ~2021-2022
* my Starcatcher is Coconut Grove pose, my Sunny Daze is II, my Royal Beauty is the 2006 Super Long Hair with white body, my Salty is the G1 big brother
* as far as i know all my ponies are USA, original/non-reproduction, and have had no restoration work or modification
  • Desert Blossom: Light green is VERY CLOSE to Green Tea Mochi (SL) / Dark green is slightly off from Scrumptious (G1), Hula Hula (G1), Finger Paints (G3) / Does not match Starshine (G1), Quackers (G1)
  • Desert Rose: Matches Starcatcher (G3), VERY CLOSE to Rosedust (SL)
  • Finger Paints: Green matches Scrumptious (G1), Hula Hula (G1) / Yellow matches Honey Gold (SL), Sunny Daze (G3), Sunbeam (G1) / Orange matches Sunny Daze (G3), Stripes (G1) / Pink matches Heart Throb (SL), Sunny Daze (G3), Royal Beauty (G3), Winterberry (G3), Stripes (g1), Quackers (G1) / Purple matches Sunny Daze (G3), VERY CLOSE to Salty (G1), Slightly off from Winterberry (G3) and Wondermint (G3), Does not match Lilac (SL) or Royal Beauty (G3) / Blue matches Starcatcher (G3), Wingsong (G1), Moonstone (G1)

  • Sunny Daze II: See Finger Paints; yellow, pink, purple, and orange are the same as Finger Paints and will match all the same as listed there
  • Waterfire: Matches (what might be) HQG1C Pumpkin Orange?, Slightly off from Paradise (G1), Barnacle (G1), Hula Hula (G1), Doesn’t match Sunny Daze (G3), Stripes (G1), Crumpet (SL) / personally i think a blend of paradise/hula hula’s orange would probably work, but that’s just a guess
  • Winterberry: Pink matches Heart Throb (SL), Royal Beauty (G3), Sunny Daze (G3), Finger Paints (G3), Stripes (G1) / Purple matches Wondermint (G3), VERY CLOSE to Salty (G1), Does not match Sunny Daze (G3), Finger Paints (G3)
  • Wondermint: Light purple matches Winterberry (G3), VERY CLOSE to Salty (G1), Does not match Sunny Daze (G3), Finger Paints (G3) / Dark purple does not match Royal Beauty (G3), Lilac (SL)
 
So I was organizing my craft supplies -- yay spring cleaning -- and I took the opportunity to cross reference the nylon hair I have with my G3 notes. It's a bit unwieldy to put it all into the thread, but I can dump it into a google doc if you're interested. I didn't have many orange-yellow-green shades to compare, but I found close matches for seven of the ten purples ;)
 
ShimmerLocks is excellent; they always ship extremely quickly, their customer service is amazing, and the quality of their nylon is stellar! I haven't tried their saran yet though. They're always willing to offer advice for color matching, so I'd recommend messaging them for help.

We changed the name of our old heart throb color to luscious because we got a better match. We called the better match heart throb 2.0. We also changed the name of buttercream to platinum blonde since our doll people kept overlooking that shade because of the name.. I hope this helps make things easier for you ^_^

It is so nice! I swear I buy new hair every week it seems lol
