G5 G5 Chatter

Finished watching and I have some unanswered questions here. If you saw the movie and want to discuss, feel free to PM.
What happened to Sunny's dad? What happened after the FiM era to make the ponies self-segregate? I really need that journal that Sunny got from her dad; I wonder if he is a descendant of Twilight Sparkle since that's her symbol on the front. Is Sunny going to stay a Pega-corn?
I was curious about the same thing with Sunny’s father. He even has muted colors in his hair that are a combination similar to Twilight’s.

I 99.9% believe they’re descendants of Twilight, explaining why Argyle has all this stuff from an ancient Equestrian Princess. Not only a journal, but the Earth Pony Crystal. I think it’ll be a fun mystery to explore in the series! I’d be pretty disappointed if they never address it, they put a surprising amount of emphasis on Twilight in general!

I just finished watching the movies twice in a row! Haha. After seeing the trailers and the Pixar/Disney-esque art style they were going for I so expected it to be a copy/paste storyline like what those two companies always do. Quite frankly both companies' stories are so played out that I'm usually just drained and annoyed after seeing one, with few exceptions. But M Little Pony has surprised me before and I went into this one hoping it would do it again, and sure enough!

I noticed there were so many moments in the movie where they set up a scene for a stock-standard, cliche contrivance for drama, and then immediately turned it around almost too fast to even notice it happening in the first place. Probably one of the really obvious ones was when Sunny was saying they didn't have time for a tea party and poor Izzy looked heartbroken. Most of these movies would have gone that route, letting Sunny's desire for progress outright get in the way of the actual goal and cause a rift in the friendship, but I seriously appreciated that they had her immediately turn around and give Izzy something else to be excited about, another task that let her still be important and included.

Whenever movies use overplayed contrivances to add drama like that it always kills the movie for me outright and I end up dreading the rest of the film, making it impossible to enjoy. That they kept going out of their way to subvert these danged tropes actually made me more excited about the movie as I was watching it!

Also I'd heard "It's All Right" way too much already before seeing this movies despite it being so new and it had really been getting on my nerves. I kept thinking "There's no possible way they could use this song well" and lo and behold, they did! I was totally cheering by the time it came up hahaha

Also was not expecting Pipp to be so vain, but I kinda think I'm here for it actually. She certainly has the voice to back it up.

Speaking of which! Spout's singing was amazing! And his song is just..... just wow! It's poignant, direct, catchy, and funny all at the same time and I kinda can't get enough of it and some of the other songs in this movie now. Also I noticed a little bit of a metaphor happening there, and a rather interesting dynamic between him and his mom. She was the fear that bred the hatred - in more ways than one. I find it interesting that they gave her some nuance as well - she had some bits that really read as the stereotypical "manipulative bad person pulling the strings" but the movie kinda just showed that her dynamic with her son wasn't healthy, and that she was more focused on "protecting her own" rather than having power or causing harm, as misguided as she still was. I think it would have been interesting to see more about that change she went through in those moments, as well. Also I feel like their dynamic wasn't unrealistic either.

Also the bit in his song where G1 is playing in the TV screens is just the best.

I was wondering the same things as well! And like the others I noticed that Sunny's dad had colors reminiscent of Twilight's as well, and had wondered if perhaps they're descendants. In an odd way I think it would make sense of why they had the earth pony crystal as well.

Also, HELLO! New elements of harmony are based on the pony races, new winged unicorn princess has transparent magic wings and horn instead of opaque like before, as far as we know she's also the first earth pony to become a princess, and also this completely changes some of those theories about "alicorn-ship" and rulership. I know some people had theorized that the ponies had chosen the "alicorns" to rule them because they were representative of all races, but this really shows that it truly is the magic itself that chooses, but it also suggests that the ponies need that kind of leadership to stay connected with one another and may not be capable of maintaining it on their own.

On the question on if she's going to stay a winged unicorn, I was wondering that as well, given that her wings and horn are transparent, and none of her merch includes them. Hasbro being spoiler-friendly for once to surprise everyone, or a mark of the state we'll be seeing Sunny in in the future? Time will tell. (Actually there is one it turns out, just one toy, that has Sunny with a horn and wings.)

Also I find myself wondering how exactly even her father managed to break away from the racism so thoroughly. He researched pony history a ton, but breaking away from the way you've been raised and the environment you've grown up in is no easy feat, and he just seemed so on top of things like it wasn't even a big deal. Meanwhile everyone around him thought all of that stuff was fake, what a strong pony he would have needed to be to not fall prey to that kind of social pressure!

I know that's looking too far into it but I find that kind of stuff interesting. I do kinda wish he hadn't gotten the Disney treatment, I can't imagine that needed to happen for any of this movie to take place the way it did.

Or you can write the below. I’m here through my phone if that helps :flutter2:

Every time I tried to reply, my whole comment kept breaking into a whole spoiler box and a spoiler box inside it, even when I tried to break the code :lolpony:

I already watched Danger, Danger like 20 times by now. Definitely my favorite song, the song itself is catchy as heck (and stands out by being more rock) and the visuals are so delightfully stupid (I guarantee you that was done on purpose). Ponies head-banging while singing “Mob” over and over, Sprout as a giant floating head slowly rotating…beautiful, brings a tear to my eye.

I just couldn’t like Sprout but he had that song going for him and I can’t deny that it wasn’t enjoyable because it was. Maybe the best in the film? I couldn’t like his mother either. The way she raised him with the views just… I mean, controlling the whole of Maretime Bay with fear? Wow, it’s amazing how more ponies didn’t think “hold on, isn’t this a bit strange?”. The series really needs to expand on this, how many generations has it been since whatever happened

Same! Haha
Honestly the head bobbing is so good. xD You know tons of people are going to gif that and honestly I might even use it. I love the bit where his head's floating in the air while the ponies march below as well, and just everything about how propaganda poster all of the visuals are.

Maybe this is a bit of a hot take but
I feel like we do have a real life equivalent to this and it starts with Tw and ends with itter. o_o Fear is a really powerful motivator, sly words can be used to take advantage of even the slightest bit of doubt someone has. I kinda got the impressions that most of the ponies in town weren't really entirely sure about it by how quickly they changed their minds here and there, but ultimately they went with it. I'd say for many people that can feel like the safer option.

Sprout’s mother (I’m no good with names) was offering safety with her products and “to be scared is to be prepared”. They must’ve put their full trust in them because of the safety promises… I can’t tell which species was most in fear. The pegasi seemed quite fine up in their mountains but then it was also said that the unicorns were “most superstitious”. It must’ve been the Earth ponies because they had no magic so felt weakest perhaps?

Mm, personally it doesn't do much good to try and judge who was most afraid! Everyone has their own ways of expressing how they feel, and some can show fear by turning in on themselves and bottling it up. I find it interesting that the unicorns were all so depressed... Izzy was saying they'd lost their spark, it's reminiscent of what happened with the Crystal Ponies in the way it manifested. And the Pegasus ponies showed they did have the same fear when they all froze up at the sight of the other races on livestream, the royalty was just doing an effective job at making everyone think they were more on top of things than they were and it was giving everyone a false sense of security.

Really each group had their own ways of dealing with fear, each of which are also realistic ways that people can end up dealing with it, though all unhealthy.

But I agree with you that the earth ponies definitely felt helpless, thinking that the other races had magic while they did not.[/spoilers]

Forgive me if anyone's already posted this but
I noticed this wall hanging in Sunny and her dad's house (right after the three foals come down the elevator.

(Okay I'm not 100% on that being the right G2 pose, but the legs look right . . . The G2s had interchangeable heads so it might be the right legs and the wrong head.)

Anyway I loved the movie, it was so cute.

I tried pausing in many parts to spot background things because I like doing that in films but I was pausing way too much. I knew this scene would have references but I missed them. Great find!

I feel like its most likely been like a 1000+ yrs....the other mane 6 have faded from the minds becoming legends in the minds of some ponies.like our view of the Trojans or the pharaohs. Or maybe things just degraded a lot quicker. If argyle is Twilight ex student that might not make sense ...but then again celestia&luna where thousands of years old. I feel like twilight would be have that immortality or long life span.
P.S i adored danger too. I feel like they where trying to send a message about how easily todays society is brainwashed&at least in america how divided we can be racially :( (not just with the song but how ponies acted) . Wouldn't normally bring up a issue like race but i really feel like that was a big message.

I can imagine Twilight choosing friendship over immortality and saying she cannot rule without her friends' support. I haven't seen FiM all the way through or read Season 10 comics yet so I'm not sure what happens I then end. I'm actually in the process of rewatching and continuing where I left off years ago. I think I only got up to finishing series 4 last time before 5 came out...
