So, this is in relation to the other thread called "Disintegrating Hair Syndrome." I don't want that to happen to my customs even if it is in 10-30 years. Therefore, I had a conversation on Etsy with a supplier. I wanted to make certain their hair was nylon. There were claims it was BJD hair made from polyurethane. I don't want to list the whole convo, as I feel bad enough doing this, but does this seem legit?

"Our original fiber is high temp nylon silk. We paid to have it extensively tested, and then we sent the result to our competitors asking them to cease and desist with their false claims. The old timers were obsessed with discrediting the hair because ... was a serious competitor in the doll hair market. No other hair seller had hair like it to compare to. They eventually faded into the background for us after about 4 years of harassment.

Unfortunately during the pandemic the small manufacturer we worked with did not fair well, which is why our ... hair (original) is being phased out and discontinued. We narrowed our listings to one single listing of the ... hair to make it easy for those wanting to stock up on what we had left of the original hair we started with.

We were blessed nearly 2 years ago to obtain a contract to become the exclusive dealer for .. nylon. This manufacturer provides high quality nylon hair for MGA, Hasbro and now many Mattel new doll lines. All the Rainbow High dolls with incredible hair, styles, curly, braids, in the stores, we have the exact hair. With exception of the s-curl, don’t mistake for curly, are pure nylon. S-curl is in fact polypropylene, a very high grade."

This is not the only company I buy from. I want nylon, mostly because I know if it is nylon it won't disintegrate, as the going theory (I think) is that DHS is caused by Hasbro using polypropelyne for some G3s and maybe some G2s.

Should I be concerned? This company sells "low-temp nylon" but I am wondering why they have so many colors others don't, especially metallics, why people say their hair is easier to work with, is it made of something that will last?

EDIT: I contacted the company and they assured me all my purchases will last beyond my lifetime. I believe them. I also went back and edited the name of the company (smacks forehead).

If, after a while, no one has any questions or insights, maybe the mods should delete this thread. But I'm posting the private convo anyway, for now.

Well after I asked them this and had this convo (before they assured me everything would last a long time), they bought the domain names of other doll hair shops so if you went to them they would redirect to their Etsy shop.
There is so much mystery now surrounding this company. See that guy in my profile pic? Remember my G2 unicorn? Those are with their hair. I am not one to say that it is my job to make sure companies are nice to each other, I mean they compete, as long as the product is good, I don't care. But I am going to have to remake a big brother in shimmerlocks hair just in case. It is such a sneaky move, I believe them about their hair being nylon, but, again, it is too much mystery. I can't spend my time with doubt, that's not what I make ponies for! That's why I originally put this thread in the "buy/sell/trade/ help" forum. I just don't know what to believe.

Personally, I LOVE The Dollyverse. Their hair isn't exactly like original pony hair, but I honestly believe it's even prettier. If you want something closer to og pony hair, I also recommend HQG1C's hair. Unfortunately, they don't have much to choose from at the moment, but the hair I have used from them is wonderful. Dolly Hair is also more like og pony hair, but I can't recommend them for multiple reasons. One of which is that I've had issues with orders from them in the past, and I've seen plenty of others with similar experiences.

I believe that the owner/operator of dolly hair died within the last couple years and the family took over, but it was a rocky transition. I’m not trying to excuse any mistakes or messed up orders. Just putting the information out there. I’m admittedly not in collecting to make customs or anywhere near the most knowledgeable about restoration.
I remember buying hair around 10-12+ years ago from DollyHair and I had to keep mentioning it to the owner for around 2 or 3 months before it was shipped out finally. Then when I rebought maybe 3-5 years ago the time issue had cleared up and it sent really quickly all four times. I havent bought any recently to tell you how the service is. I was unaware of other issues when i purchased but I dont know anything about the family so I dont wanna judge. Its one of those things, gatta be a smart buyer and keep an eye out!

Also, @Daintress Same! My dollyhair hair from long ago is also still perfect!

Both Dolly Hair and Shimmerlocks get stock from the same places that Hasbro and Mattel order their hair from. Both these companies have outstanding products.

To be frank, these are the only places I order from as I’ve always had great experiences with shipping and customer service from both. As well as longevity of hair and hair products from both.

I know a lot of other customizes use RetroDoll US, My Little Custom and The Dollhair Emporium UK are very popular choices for quality MLP like hair.

Don’t forget to go through our helpful customizing topics in the FAQ forums.

I'm starting to feel better about the customs I made. I mean, what are the chances of DHS on a custom? I'm sure stuff like that has happened, but the place I'm talking about has fantastic hair, and it isn't like Nylon is hard to get, so there is no reason to believe difficulty between companies would change what the hair is made from. Regardless, I'm gonna go ahead and use Shimmerlocks since my pony has orange hair and they have a match for every shade used-even different shades between Crumpet and Baby Lucky Leaf. I like the idea of my ponysona being limited to Hasbro colors, and "Summer Charm" is like amazing, as I prefer metallic hair to tinsel.
Isn't it weird that Shimmerlocks' hair has a melting point of 400+, but I melted a pony's hair once at 256 degrees?

I bought from Shimmerlocks, my first and only vendor for hair since it was my first time. I notice one hair is slightly more coarse and more 'flyaway' for lack of better terms than the other. I assume they're all nylon, but the feel is slightly different between the two colors I picked. She was also kind enough to warn me that one of the colors needed to be misted down to work with and sent a free mister.

Excellent seller and will buy again if I decide to rehair again

That could be from the type/finish of the nylon you chose! Some finishes are super heavy, some light, some bouncey, some extra soft, etc. :satisfied: Metallic finishes especially feel strange haha theyre sooo lightweight like air and springy! They tend to stick out if not styled. Not sure what type you had!

I think disintegrating hair syndrome has a lot to do with how the pony is stored and even the humidity in the climate where the pony is kept. If a pony is kept poorly, any of the hair from all the reputable vendors might run the risk. I've only had disintegrating hair happen once and it wasn't from any of the ponies I've had from my childhood. It was from a pony I bought online. All of mine have been stored indoors and kept dry. Who knows how this one pony was kept over the years.
