How does one begin a custom??

I would like to make my son a custom mlp. He always says his cutie mark would be a YouTube symbol. I don't really know where to begin or what to do. Should I make it a big brother pony? Do I scrap one (I always feel bad when I think about that) or get a blank one? Or should I just commission it to someone else? I thought it might mean more if I made it. Any thoughts??

I always use ponies that have hard to fix issues for customization. Like hair cuts, highlighter, marker, cancer even. It's not too hard to rehair with yarn and a plain yarn needle. Then just pick a baity pony that is the color or pose you want. If you want to dye it a darker color shouldn't be too hard. @Skybreeze is a great person to ask.

It's really difficult to say. I have multiple ponies waiting to be customized mainly because I don't have any "inspiration" for them. I also very much enjoy restoring them more than customization.

I think you've got the biggest hurdle done, in that you know what you want to do. As @Tak mentioned I do highly recommend that you use a bait pony over using a fresh or good/collectable pony. As it's your son, you might want to look at the baby boy pony bases for his pony? As far and mane and tail are concerned there is a lot of options and it all depends on how involved you want your project to take. You can do a mane and tail with fresh new hair and re-root yourself, you can use "donor hair" from another bait pony, yarn always has a fun look or you can mold it with some kind of clay. The options are endless as far as customization but it does all take time and patience.

Then on the other hand, you can look into customizing via commissions with a custom artist. There's many through out the entire pony community and all with varying pricing and timelines. While not made by you, I do still think the thought and care is there from you as the person who taught our to have this pony made for your son. <3
