How Many Ponies ARE There???

Hi Everyone! My Mom saw my collection for the first time in its entirity (~125 ponies total) and couldn't believe how many I had. I tried telling her I'm barely scratching the surface here, but didn't know how many ponies there actually are to give her an idea. So...how many ponies ARE there? I'd really like to know:

1) How many G1 U.S. ponies exist? (Not including re-releases, but including mail orders)
2) How many international G1 ponies (non-US) are there?
3) What is the G3 tally to date?

Even rough estimates would be helpful. Thanks!!
 
I think I counted the U.S. G1 releases once, but didn't count Dream Beauties or Petites, and I got somewhere in the ballpark of 574 or something.

I don't think anyone knows for sure about non-U.S. releases (G1s)

And G3s? Boy, I don't even want to know! ;)

g3's number about 520 including re-releases, but not breezies and ponyville or plush. just ponies
g1's number in the 1000's depending on us, foreign etc
 
I'm not too sure about G1's. I did try to make a checklist, but I know it's not complete, and I'm not sure what the rules are about posting links now... If this is not allowed now, please feel free to remove it. If you care to count them up, I must be almost there with the ponies that have been discovered so far...

As for G3's, including Breezies, So Softs and Styling Ponies, but not Ponyville and Plushies, there are 456 (plus reverse hoof hearts, light/dark symbol variants, and identical re-releases, such as the "bonus" ponies released with Guava Lava's Surf Shack etc.)

I have made an excel-list with all G1 ponies I have seen in the last years. The list is with all US ponies and ponies from the other countries, that made/sold ponies. The total is around 1200 ponies. Every variant that I have seen so far is counted.

Wow! I had no idea there were that many. Awesome G3 checklist Lancer! I'll have to count them when I have more time. Thanks guys for the info.!

really that many for G3's? I'm only like about 30-40 pieces short of hitting a complete collection, this includes reissues. I was thinking along the lines of 300-400. I'm not counting the syling ponies and I don't collect those baby doll looking ones. But I do collect plushies! Hadn't even thought about counting breezies in the pony population. It would be like counting those pony friends like the zebra in with regular ponies to me.

that is with re-issues. for instance the first balloon ponies,then balloon ponies with picnic baskets, then balloons with bonus breezies. then there were bonus packs like lily lightly, then lily lightly with lula belle, then lily lightly with yesterdaisy. even the styling ponies! plain rarity, bonus rarity with extra hairclips, then bonus rarity with hairbows and hats! my gosh i think there are 5 or 6 releases of sunny daze! so it depends on how you count the ponies and what you consider to be a complete collection. some people are happy having 1 sunny daze, 1 rainbow dash, 1 wysteria and so on with out having all the hassle of the re-releases. but if you are out to have every release it is a high number! and the blasted playsets!!! if you buy original pinkie pie house, then pinkie pie bonus mat, then pinkie pie bonus tru ponies. that's already 3 pinkies and 3 blossom forths not to mention if you bought the tube you would have another pinkie pie then the new teaset (ponyville chibi set i mean) that's 5 pinkie pies!!! the numbers are amazing once you start counting!

oh! requiem i didn't mean to dishearten you! i was just trying to explain why there are differences in pony counts. not everyone collects every single version. it is a good goal just to have 1 of every single pony! i think the re-releases are just to torture us! lol. i am missing licensing show pinkie pie to finish my collection. that will give me 1 of every g3 made. i do have many of the duplicates, but not all. don't give up! we all wrestle with our collections every day. then endless decisions. open or don't open. display by year, color ,or pose. on and on.this is for the joy of it, for the fun and love of it. don't compare yourself to others just make yourself happy!
 
I've pretty much given up on a COMPLETE collection. My hopes are just having all the ones I really like. So know when EVERYONE asks me (and they always do) if I have all of them, I can say, "No, there's about 1500 of them!!"
 
I think you're right Jagular, the re-releases are just torture. I just collect one of every pony that has multiple poses and re-releases. I don't have the room for all the "duplicates." At first, I hated how they kept re-releasing the same ponies. But now, I view it as I can eventually find a pony I love in a pose I actually like! For instance, I love Lulabelle, but hated her Spring Basket pose so I didn't buy it. Well then she comes out on a scooter and looks so much cuter! Of course, I also like her pose as a bonus pony with Lily Lightly....hmmmmm.
 
well said, the re-releases drive me bananas!

I had given up when it comes to the larger high dollar playsets on reissues. Just like the castle, I had bought it 2 months prior to it be re-issued with the 3 ponies that were walmart exclusives. What did I do?! I took my castle back, exchanged it for the 3 with new ponies and got $10 back! That's what I did! :p And plus the castle had never been opened, I prefer MIB. I've got just about all of the reissues, etc. If i were to go after different pkg like between the US and Europe/Canada pkg, i'd be really in some deep trouble and that is just way too many!
 
When it comes to G3 re-release I just picked my favorite and keep getting...Rainbow Dash...in any form she comes in. All the others Hasbro can keep. I just ignore her in the movies because she is just annoying. Though if they re-release Rarity or any other pony with rainbow hair, I would buy, buy, buy.
