Why is my little dog so brave? He took on the raccoon last night. He's 14lbs. That raccoon is huge! He, my boy, took a chunk of tail right off the raccoon. Degloved it. Now Wesley is sick from what ever bacteria was on the raccoon or in it’s blood. I need to get him to the vet, but all the emergency and walk-in vets were at capacity today. I’ll be up early to get him a spot tomorrow.

Oh no! Poor pup, too brave for his own good. My little 11 pound doggy is like that too, they think they’re bigger than they are or something o_O
I hope you can get him into the vet tomorrow

Thanks. He came out of it with no visible injuries, so he's a tough little dude.

Whatever you do Tak, don't let him give you or E any kisses. Raccoons (like most wildlife) can carry a ton of horrible diseases. I hope he's ok, especially if he's already showing signs of illness (needs to go to the vet ASAP!!) but please be careful and keep washing your hands. If either you or E become ill, go to the ER right away.

Also, beware for when that "bravery" becomes danger. Having owned small-medium dogs, they can get in over their head very quickly.

I was vaccinated for rabies when I was a very small child the same day my grandparents' dog had been messing with a raccoon and I had been touching the dogs. No confirmed rabies from the raccoon after animal control took it and did testing, but because rabies is fatal to humans AND animals when treatment isn't given in time, I was given the vaccine as a precaution. I would not take this situation lightly. Good luck.

Thank - you. I didn't let out. Thankfully, Wesley is trained not to lick. Especially faces. I got him to the vet today and got him started on antibiotics. We did be careful with washing yesterday. My dad's coming over to set up some more traps tomorrow. Wesley is just going to have to stay on the tether outside after dark from now on. I hate doing it, but the yard is just too big and Wesley's drive to protect his property is too strong. We were lucky this time. I don't want to chance it again. I will call the doctor tomorrow morning to get their opinion, too. I know those rabies shots for humans are brutal, but if it's necessary, we'll get them.

Poor little guy! I hope he's starting to feel better.

Oh poor Wesley, he's such a brave boy.

I'm glad it ended without Wesley being badly harmed. A male raccoon can weigh up to 40lbs and can be excessively vicious. I work with them every now and then, usually just babies, but even small ones can be awful when cornered. I hope your father can trap and relocate it somewhere safer for it and others.

Wesley is like so many little dogs, he thinks he's a pit! :D

(I second Jewel's caution, as well. Coonies can be very germy. As omnivores they will scavenge meals from dead animals and the resulting bacteria they have in their mouths can be formidable.)

I'm so lucky that it was running. The neighbors and I think it's probably a female. It's also on the smaller side for a raccoon that has access to human garbage from the neighborhood and the businesses nearby. There's a 7-11 on the corner with a gas station and bus stops each direction.

He's doing great this morning. Bouncy and ready to go. I think we really got lucky. My dad put a tether up so I could get him in and out easily when I had my neck fusion. We get so little daylight from now until March… He will be okay with only quick trips once it really starts to get cold next month. I’ll just make sure he has more time outside during the daylight. I’m checking in with our doctors today, too. Hopefully we won’t need shots, but better to be safe.

my dog is a chihauhua and thinks that shes bigger than a great date, crazy girl

I hope your baby is doing good though!
