I realized I was improperly storing my ponies and some of them suffered damage (mostly warping). How do you guys pack ponies away so they are safe? I know you are supposed to use certain types of paper when packing things away (acid free, etc). Are paper towels a safe type of paper? How do you keep them from being squished against the sides of boxes or each other?

I use individual plastic ziplock baggies, so their hair won't get messed up or their paint rubbed (or bugs on them, ew), and store them in cardboard banker boxes. I've also recently started buying plastic storage containers (like Sterlite (sp?) brand) that are shallow enough that the ponies all stand upright on one layer instead of being stacked.

I've never used bubble wrap or paper or anything like that. But I think paper towels would be fine as long as they're plain white, no printed design. You don't want the ink to rub onto the pony.

Some people worry about plastic bags due the possibilities of moisture getting trapped, but I've been storing ponies like that for 20 years and I've never had problems. Just make sure you let ponies dry out thoroughly after giving them a wash. I usually let them dry a full week.

I use white paper towels for my ponies and its worked really well for yearsss probably going on 10 years, but Im going to buy archival paper when im able to. I think @MustBeJewel mentioned the other day she also uses archival paper. The paper I would specifically not recommend is tissue paper meant for gifts. I received a brand new pony ornament wrapped in tissue paper once and the tissue paper had fused to the pony.

I packed mine away in waterproof totes 11 years ago and am just getting them back out. I laid a layer of ponies flat on the bottom, covered in paper towels, then put another layer for about 5 or 6 layers of ponies. I did make sure to cover any chartreuse hair with paper towels so it did not bleed onto the vinyl. I am just now unpacking them, and besides some of them being sticky from age, I don't see any problems yet. No bugs or dust or squish. Good luck.

Stored mine with old T-shirt’s- put down shirt and then a layer of ponies, none touching each other, and then another thin layer of shirts topped with another layer of ponies until the box/tub was full. Also added bounce sheets on the bottom under the t-shirts and on top of the top layer of shirts to discourage mold, bugs, etc. (it works!). After 25 years in an attic , they were just fine- one or two had very minor sticky from the heat-cold stress of extreme temperatures in that shameful storage situation, but I was beyond thrilled to see that they were ok!
