SAN DIEGO, CA (June 21, 2021) – Since its very inception in 2012, the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic monthly comic book series from IDW has captured the hearts and minds of filly fans everywhere. Now, after almost a decade of publication, we bid a fond farewell to Friendship is Magic with September’s issue #102, the oversized conclusion of the official “Season 10” storyline that picked up where the beloved animated series left off.
...
But friends, never fear! Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity will return in a new series beginning in October: My Little Pony: Generations! Written by Casey Gilly and illustrated by Michela Cacciatore, the new five-issue miniseries will see the Ponies of two separate generations collide, as the familiar faces from Friendship is Magic must call upon the original G1 Ponies of the 1980s for help against a new witch threat erupting from the Volcano of Doom!
...
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #102, by longtime contributors Jeremy Whitley and Andy Price, delivers the long-awaited climax of the “Season 10” story arc. With the Knights of Order launching an all-out assault on Equestria, the Mane 6 must face a foe singularly focused on capturing the Elements of Harmony. It’s a good thing that they have a lot of friends, old and new, upon whom they can rely!

Humm okay. But will they actually get the ponies personalities correctly? Or will they be carbon copies of the Mane Suxx?

At least both are more or less in their respective art styles.

Will they include ponies who were actually more likely to show up, like Wind Whistler, Fizzy, Truly, Galaxy, and Shady? Or are they gonna stick with Lauren's inspirational misunderstanding? Nm that roughly half those ponies were G3 based and swapped.

Will the FiM writers actually have a fair balance, or are they just gonna use it to take unnecessary and baseless potshots at MLP n Friends to support supposed FiM superiority?

I'll wait and see, because I haven't been charmed by Hasbro writer's innapropriate, immature, brony humor concerning past generations.

The art style is cute. I'll give it that much.

Why so negative man.

“‘It's exciting to work with the characters that I grew up with, and to have the chance to create new characters... especially the bad guys. Everyone loves the bad guys!’ says Cacciatore.”

The writers say they grew up with G1.

EDIT #2: I’ve made two edits because I was a failure at reading comprehension don’t mind me just mind my original comment yep nothing to see down here.

Because Hasbro's cast n crew have been taking baseless, mean spirited potshots at G3 and G1 for years, and some of it was innapropriate. Have you seen the official retro throwback pop-up youtube video? Or the documentary where the voice cast made fun of MLP? Or heard that nonsense lie where Lauren Faust claimed all girls shows were nothing but tea parties and crying over nothing?

Its astonishing, because Hasbro does not treat the heritage of their other properties so badly.

And I've heard too many people claim they were fans of the source material, only to watch them gut it and crap on it. The Jem and the Holograms movie, Mega Man Fully Charged, and Thundercats Roar come immediately to mind as prime examples.

Hopefully they'll do Gen 1 justice. I've been reading the IDW MLP since it came out, and it's pretty adorable. Actually it's better written than the show ever was. Art is typically top notch, especially Katie Cook's work. Her stuff is super sweet.

It’s cute seeing them all together, I’m glad they aren’t both drawn in g4 like most of the pics I seen

except one thing, it looks like they put glory instead of sparkler for rarity

I’m intrigued! I like that it’s a mini series so I don’t have to commit to anything. Where do I buy?!
Not sure. Perhaps on Hasbro's website? Or maybe at a bookstore chain like Barnes n Noble?

I haven’t seen your other examples but Faust grew up with the original MLP and if that’s how she remembers it then so be it. She doesn’t hide that she didn’t think many girls cartoons were all too good and that’s what she’s passionate about and inspires her. She’s not just targeting MLP. That’s really all I have to say about that.

I’m sorry that Hasbro has been doing that but I feel like…it hasn’t really been a thing for the past few years? Sure taking potshots at your own original show in any official capacity is really rude but Hasbro has even been making tons of merch based on G1. Not just the BasicFun rereleases but apparel and G1 branded stuff. Most franchises don’t have that. Also, the comics and even show itself never took potshots at G1 to my knowledge. The comics have separate writers from Hasbro over at IDW. I’m sure the comic will be fine, fun even!

It's also really rude of her to outright lie and discredit other cartoon artists just to prop her own shows up. Because I certainly don't remember the She-Ra, Sailor Moon, Care Bears, Jem, or MLP shows being anything like what she described. And I have some of those on dvd.

The retro pop up video was created about the same time that hasbro announced the Basic Fun sets, SDCC Twilight and the Retro Mane Six Pack, so that's one of their more recent examples.

I have reason to be ambivalent.

Cannot. Wait. :ponylove: I look forward to seeing what they do with this premise!

It looks like they'll be available in October, and I would imagine that like the current comics, they'll be available through major booksellers as well as probably Amazon/etc. But no information seems to be available about specific retailers just yet. ;)

This is one that I will want a physical copy of myself. I hope the artwork is as beautiful as the first cover. Not a fan of the second one as the G1’s look like a weird mash up of G1 and 3.

@Leave a Whisper - I understand the frustration in not getting a true to the original with MLP. And the humour used against earlier generations. BUT I kinda get it. The comics are geared towards a demographic that largely looks down on earlier gens of MLP, while not true for everyone, the majority rules comes into play and in the end all Hasbro and IDW care about is money and not necessarily staying true to the original material. But, I have read quite a few and I personally enjoy the stories in the comic series (I too love Katie Cook’s artwork, along with Andy Price). The only thing we can do is wait and hope they finally do our original lasses justice. (No matter what someone will be disappointed either way.) Also, I liked the Jem movie as it’s own entity. *looks around awkwardly*

@Gingerbread - they should be available in comic book stores, general bookstores, online, and through the IDW app. I typically buy from the app so I don’t also have to hoard comic books. O_O

Doesn't make it right, and it was really the adult subsection that was so toxic and disparaging. It should have been a retrospective strictly for the kids. The staff had no business catering to those sorts of people.

No, but sadly it's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. It's in the past and all we can do is move forward and hope that they do better with the new generations to come.

Yeah, but that's Hasbro doing it and being completely unrepentant for their lack of professionalism. Not kids.

It would be like if Disney officially took pot shots at Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and made not so subtle references to the outside jokes about the characters being metaphors for drug addicts. Angry parents would be on their butts so fast, that Disney would do its best to bury it as quickly and deeply as possible.

For sanity's sake though, I hope you're right and that this will treat the franchise fairly all around, and be as lovely as the artwork on the covers.

That’s a really…cynical and unfair way to look at it imo. She didn’t say that. She props up girls shows she hasn’t worked on all the time.
Okay I’m really gonna leave it at that now because none of you probably want to debate with a teenager about something she wasn’t even alive for.

Disney actually kind of does this. Disney has been poking fun at their old movies (or rather, just repeating what people joke about it) in their live action remakes and even in stuff like Ralph Breaks the Internet (“Do people assume all your problems were solved because a big strong man showed up?”) Live-action Dumbo made a joke about the Pink Elephants scene (because people make jokes about how they got a baby drunk) before just skipping over it even tho that original scene is amazing for…multiple reasons. Because being meta sells. Being self-aware sells. Fan service sells. And yes it’s frustrating.

If Faust does not want to be fair to her fellow cartoonists, she does not deserve fair scrutiny either.

My apologies. I let my temper get out of hand.

Back on topic, I see Lofty there anyway. That's a nice start. Perhaps the movie ponies and Flutter ponies will make a good appearance as well.
