Found Dainty Dahlia at a thrift store and she needs some TLC. I found a tutorial for washing/styling a Perfume Puff, which looks like it will be more painstaking and time-intensive than re-grouting my bathroom. Feel free to warn me away from doing this, or to send your how-to advice!

that should be a fun project. I hear a pet slicker brush would work for Puff ponies? Not sure though, I've never tried it.

Can't wait to see the finished piece, it will be so satisfying once its done!

Aw wow! You found her at a thrift store?! Great luck!!

uh oh. good luck, and i'm excited to see how she comes out!

I used to have this pony! I got her second hand as well. I think my friend hung on to her and our other G1's when her girls "outgrew" ponies, sadly she gave all of the G3's away. BUT - for her hair:
I am fairly certain I just used water, TONS of conditioner, and a pony or similar "doll" brush. Of course start at the ends of the mane and tail and work your way up. I'm sure some of that fluffy hair came out with the detangling, but those ponies have so much of it, you'd never know after it's all brushed out. I was always at a loss as to what to do with her hair after it was detangled, I had somehow never seen a commercial for the perfume ponies and didn't know that you're supposed to just roll with the poofiness (pre-internet times; couldn't just look it up - crazy!). I believe I ended up twisting her mane into little buns down her neck similar to knob braids without braiding first. I think I just braided the tail into a bunch of little braids and tied them together at the ends. Not how you would want to display one if you're interested in authenticity I'm sure, but it did look relatively decent. The mane style reminded me of carousel or show horses. Best of luck and have fun! I'd love to see an "after" photo!

I used to work with Puffs a lot in the olden days. Back then I also just used lots of conditioner and one of the hard vintage Barbie brushes that were to be found in every lot of miscellaneous toys back then, and got to work picking and picking. Try not to pull too hard, just use lots of little strokes and exit the hair and try moving a little further down when you feel much resistance, and they shouldn't shed too badly. None of my Puffs are braided or bound with ribbons, I didn't want to distort the hair. I just trained the hair into a flowing puff toward one side of the neck as I brushed it out. They're all beautiful and fluffy!

Puffs are not that difficult to restore or work with. They’re actually easier than the average frizzy haired pony.

The key is lots and lots of conditioner and to comb from the ends to the roots. I like to use a wide tooth comb at first, then go through with a small tooth comb. As you rinse out the conditioner, use the comb to get it out. This way you don’t re-knot any hair while rinsing put the conditioners.

Here’s a picture of the comb and brush I use when restoring ponies:

Here’s two of my Puff’s I’ve done (unfortunately I can’t find any of my before shots):

Oooh they look lovely!

Realized I'm not entirely sure what she is supposed to look like, so went for max poof! Any tips on getting that pink highlighter off her leg? And what is it with pink highlighter anyway? I can't tell you how many ponies I've found at thrift stores with a scribble or two of pink highlighter somewhere on their body!

Looks great! Max puff is the way to go. Here’s a MIB picture. I’ve never seen or had a Perfume Puff before but they look so soft

Great work!

I'm sorry, a PERFUME PUFF at a THRIFT STORE? What amazing luck!!

I reference the MLP Preservation Project for pretty much anything regarding restoration work. For the pink marks, you might try acetone, and if that doesn't take it off then you'll likely need to sunfade her. But my God, that hair! You've done such amazing work!

She looks fantastic. Great work. I don't think had a Perfume puff very frizzy. I was lucky with that. I did wash a bunch of them at once.. They all turned out ok. My heart goes out to the wounded solider ponies. :)
