Has anyone removed wings from the 6 inch Fashion Style G4 ponies? I am having great success so far with a custom, and I really want to remove them without screwing up. It is the pre-reboot kind, where the wings stick out from the back like bunny ears. wings.jpg That dark line is not a gap, it is a leftover line of dark blue paint from the "Wonderbolts" outfit I removed with acetone. The wings appear to be one piece, and they are not painted on that elevated area in between them on ponies wearing jumpsuits like Soarin and Spitfire. So are they like a carapace that can be removed somehow? does it leave a clean hole in the back, or a "who knows what yer gonna get" mess? Should I just leave the custom a peg? He'd be better as an earthling, but only Fluttershy had the right eyes.

nowings.jpg Yes! You CAN remove them  I used a kitchen knife so there are some scars....scar.jpg this one is held together with superglue, bottomscar.jpg this one holds itself shut so que sera sera. If I'd only had an exacto it might have been flawless. But I'm not bothered by fine lines and major amputations, its all a part of aging. Live and learn. I will probably seal the edge of the wing hole and fill it in with fake flowers (dandelions?), as it will match the custom.....:ROLO::winkpony::Flutter:

lol, @Lilykin I saw your answer for filling in and now I’m wondering if my quick dry spakle and some paint would work on a hole in a pony… it’s done wonders for my walls. (Please don’t ask, I’m just accident prone and drywall is surprisingly easy to put holes in or break  )

I have no idea honestly, tho I don't think it'd work especially well lol. I have used air dry clay on dolls with ok results. Idk how well it'd work on soft vinyl.

I do wonder if you could use something like worbla to fix ponies since it's a soft forming plastic.

i bought apoxie sculpt-it says it adheres to anything and can be molded easily, might not even need the tin foil. i bought a "fettling tool" (clay knife) and an exacto to mold it when wet so I don't have to sand it, but if I have to sand it after it dries I have the tools for that, too. Looking forward to it, now!

I can’t wait to see the results!

Whoa! I just saw a video on youtube that I think is important for anyone wanting to use epoxy: *Don't let your pets or children around it while you are working (especially pets that sniff things), wear gloves, and leave the epoxy in a well ventilated place during work and while it is curing.*

Epoxy releases imperceptible vapors that cause allergic reactions to the lungs-for some people it takes years, for some it happens right away. I say keep pets away because they sniff things (obviously), and people who work with epoxy all the time wear special masks. It can cause vertigo, chemical pneumonia, lung cancer, dermatitis, and chemical burn. Not everyone seems to react to it negatively right away, most people never get the skin allergy.

I am still going to do the custom, but I am going to do it on the floor right in front of my open door, and with gloves! My little kitty will not be allowed near it, and it will cure either in a well ventilated place, or locked up tight away from everything else in the house. I also ordered some masks that may not be what I should wear, but I am going to try to fill in the hole ASAP and then leave it to cure. I'm sure many customizers here already know that.

I think that there should be a pinned thread about the dangers of epoxy, since pony collecting is the only reason I ever purchased some and it's pretty risky. What if my little kitty got sick because I didn't know not to let him near it?

Anyway, I can't hold it in any longer, the custom is...Oscar Wilde! He had large, almond shaped green/blue eyes that turned down at the outer corner, just like Fluttershy. Photo Finish's purple jacket and "loafers" will be perfect!

My apologies, I should have mentioned working in a well ventilated is recommended too. I forgot not everyone had their ceramics professor lecture about proper ventilation every class. (Or lived on the BJD forums as a teen lol ^^; )

Anytime you are sanding something like wood, clay, resin, etc. you should be doing so somewhere well ventilated or in sanding box. It is important to use respirator mask especially with the polymer clays (like apoxie) and resins due potential toxic fumes and microplastic dust.

It's always important to read the instructions and warning labels before using a new product.

He's coming along....

He turned into an FBR because of the discoloration in Fluttershy's vinyl, and the difficulty matching wet paint so it looks like the pony's original color after it dries. Oscar was a Victorian writer, therefore his symbol is his own fancy signature :lolpony: Painting and Epoxying are a lot more fun than dyeing! Thanks for the help, everyone!

The dangers of epoxy and resins are very common knowledge, and products come with ample safety warnings. There is no need for such a thread here to advise people to read the instructions on their own products.

Other common knowledge that borders on common sense would be:
- Always wear a mask and work in a well-ventilated area when working with chemicals or when sanding
- If you are worried about protecting your skin with whatever you are working with, wear gloves.
- Never let pets or children anywhere near your craft projects.

I would like to note the differences between epoxy and Apoxie:

Epoxy is "the family of basic components or cured end products of epoxy resins. Epoxy resins, also known as polyepoxides, are a class of reactive prepolymers and polymers which contain epoxide groups. The epoxide functional group is also collectively called epoxy."

"Liquid epoxy resins in their uncured state are mostly classed as irritant to the eyes and skin, as well as toxic to aquatic organisms. Solid epoxy resins are generally safer than liquid epoxy resins, and many are classified non-hazardous materials."

Apoxie Sculpt is an air-drying clay made of 2 parts that when combined together make for a hard and smooth finish. "The Apoxie® Sculpt two part system as designed in the quantities provided is safe for normal use by adults. Not intended for use by children." "Apoxie Sculpt Part A, Part B, and fully cured Parts A + B have been fully tested and are hereby certified as safe, non-toxic, and non-hazardous formulations."

Lastly, to avoid the problem you've had here in the first place, I would strongly recommend starting with the mold of pony you most want your project to resemble. In this case, it would have been a much better idea to being with an earth pony base, rather than to go through the danger, time, and effort to remove the wings from a pegasus base. ;)

Actually, I prefer this way. @MustBeJewel I like that the pony looked nothing like anything released by Hasbro after the wings were removed and the hole filled and painted- it's its own color and species, much like the first time I saw a rehair/Hasbro inspired custom. Plus I learned something new about crafting! It got me really into it, I was so thrilled when those wings popped out, I would not trade the experience for doing it on an original wingless. Plus, what a sense of accomplishment! :flutter2: It's all good.:Flutter4:
