Andromeda! I love the painting you did on her and her fantastic eyes! The crystal horn is a great idea too. I am sooo in love with her stars though... she is amazing!
Luna's stars are pretty great too. I probably had more to say about her until I forgot it all when I saw Andromeda. Wow! These are all really wonderful in their own ways. You have been busy! Thank you for sharing them!
I've been a very busy bee with customizing lately, since it's been received so well! I have 5 whole customs (!) to note here, all completed within the last two months or so. It's been very rewarding!
I'll start with the aforementioned custom commissions!
First, Granny Smith! She was a challenge in and of herself- not only have I never done a canon character or an old character, but I also had to sculpt her knobby joints and snout! Sculpting took 3 days in and of itself (which was mostly drying time, but I digress) and took a while to get things situated. I had to superglue the sculpted elements down on her legs to prevent them from popping off of the flexible vinyl, but her snout stayed in place. I really dislike sculpting with epoxy putty since I have to wear gloves, but after the base elements were down they sanded really smoothly. I also added a little height to her rump to achieve that sharper hip bone that Granny Smith's got. I only mention this because I think it's funny!
I experimented with painted shading around her joints to emphasize their shape and to get her wrinkles down, and it turned out pretty nice!
As far as I can tell, there are only 2 or 3 other old Granny Smith customs, so she's a pretty unique one
Sprinkle Cake had very few instructions- white body, blue eyes, sprinkles (obviously), and white hair. I wasn't really thrilled with how the sprinkles turned out- I probably should have added shading so they wouldn't look so flat- but I really love how her eyes came out. Which is good, because I'd accidentally painted over her original lashes too much and agonized over getting them symmetrical
My commissioner has actually restyled her hair and it really elevates her look! I love what they've done with her She's precious with curls!
This Luna was part of a lot on eBay and came to me with cut hair. I knew she was a good candidate for a light customization from there. Her eyes and cutie mark were in really excellent condition- she just needed new hair! I love using my dark yarn for things, as you may have noticed, and I also love painting in the shoes the princesses wear. I got the idea for a kind of Twice As Fancy Luna and went with it.
The stars were hard at first. I was originally just going to make them dots, which made her look like a ladybug. It was awful. I remembered the technique where you load up a paintbrush with watered down paint and flick it at your canvas as a shortcut for stars and it really came together! From there it was just a matter of picking out the biggest dots to make into twinkly stars! She also has slightly metallic eyeshadow just because I thought it'd be cute.
My mom actually bought her right away because she was so super stinkin' cute, which was a lovely surprise!
Next up is a pony I've dubbed Andromeda, taking from her inspiration!
As you can see, she was a pretty in-depth custom. She was originally a hornless Skyflier that I had at one point intended to restore because her horn was, strangely, inside of her body. I then thought up a nature themed custom with sculpted elements that included a quartz horn. I eventually gave that up because I abhor sculpting and painted her entirely black with no real plan and she sat on my desk for a month.
Then I got the bug to paint stars after Luna. I set the lofty goal of painting a whole galaxy. Turns out that was hard! I pivoted to hard stylization after that to cover a lackluster paint job. I do like how she came out, though! She's very striking and the horn is unique and her eyeshadow gradient is very lovely to look at.
Last is a little bit of a foster fail, if you could call it that. I make most of my customs to sell but sometimes I'll really fall in love with one's personality and keep them. This is Harvest!
I had no clue what to do with her for a little bit- I'd gotten her in a lot that contained Luna- but inspiration struck and I decided a scarecrow pony with a torn ear would be pretty cute! I listen to readings of spooky MLP stories from time to time so scarecrow ponies were on the brain
She had her own set of challenges despite coming together pretty quickly. I only worked on her for 1 day (though it was a long work session!) Her body was painted entirely brown and then I busted out the chalk pastels to add depth to her burlap without having to painstakingly paint each individual line. I was worried that any attempts to do so would look cluttered and lumpy, so I opted to give her the implication of worn burlap without the implicit details. I realized midway through the project that I had the most perfect yarn color for her hair, as well. The original plan was to give her real button eyes but I didn't like the way they sat so I left them with this hollow look, and to add more stitching along her body, though I loved the body blushing so much I didn't want to sully it with additional paint. That's also why she doesn't have a cutie mark- I was going to give her a sunflower mark and paint additional sunflowers around her hooves. If she were a real pony, I guess that's what she'd have for a cutie mark!
I was also inspired by Retrogeek Crafts Pumpkin Pie. I'd seen her video ages ago and thought Pumpkin Pie was such a fun custom! Pumpkin Pie also served as minor inspiration for my clown's stockings, particularly the stitched patchwork one.
Harvest's torn ear look was achieved with cotton from a swab and glue, by the way! I glued cotton down with superglue to first round out the ear and prevent the hair from snagging on the edge, then used Fabritac to glue more down on top of the dried, superglued cotton. I used a needle to fluff up the fibers after the Fabritac was dry.
Phew! That was a lot of work to type up I hope you guys like these customs as much as I do!
