Thoughts? [Monster High live action]

I was able to catch it yesterday and I have... conflicted feelings.

I don't mind them switching up the lore so much but it did feel like it wanted to be like the Descendants movie but didn't give any character besides Clawdia a chance to develop. The story was pretty shaky too. We're enlightened enough for gender diversity but humans and anything associated with them are all evil???

Also I'm big mad Clawd just doesn't exist? So no Dracula and Clawd?? :(

The kids that played the main 3 were good, especially Frankie's actor.
That was the vibe I got big time as well. It’s just another live action Nickelodeon movie to “babysit” the kids and tween audiences. Lol I’m sure my friend’s daughter would’ve loved it when she was younger.

I agree, but I feel like they’ll make an appearance in another movie or show. If that’s what Nick is looking to do based on the reviews/views of this movie. :/

I like the fact
I was very un-optimistic about this live action remake since I adored the original cartoons. However, Frankie is they/them, the actors all are relatable in that they have human figures, and Nickelodeon does the music in a much different way than Disney. I’m still not sure, but happier. E still likes draculuara, too. :redheart:
I like the fact that they retain the flashy bright colors of their 2d counterparts, unlike a certain other show (cough, cough winx) but I'm not really a fan of the in your face "HI! I'm a blank/blank and this is 90% of my entire personality!"
I'd much rather have it be an "oh by the way" kind of thing, I feel it would be a more organic way to go about it, but that's just me, I did enjoy the music video though, very ballywood like the zombies movies and the live action aladin movie.

also I want abbys coat! Her outfit was sooo cute!

 Why? just why

Having never seen any MH, I can only say that it's a great video, and I like this song. I'd maybe watch an episode, but can't see it holding my attention unless every episode basically mimics Glee in this same way. Lol!

@Skybreeze HE SKIPS ALL THE SONGS in his video. That's not cool! I guess I will definitely have to actually watch it.

I noticed that too but I suspect he did it intentionally because of copyrights and being a content creator on YT they often get hit hard when music is played. I know my good friend get hit a lot on his music if he plays more than a few second of a song and sometimes he gets it even with just that. :/ YT can be very harsh for their creators.

This video essay basically sums up how I felt about the movie. Lol
E and I agree. :(
E said that it’s ‘for wannabe teenagers’… I think that means kids who just aren’t quite there yet. Maybe 9-11 year age group.

Not so many songs in the original. We never watched the reboot.

Okaay so i finally watched it!! I LOVED it!!! :purpleheart::purpleheart: Everyones opinions are valid, but for me it was perfect and all I could ever hope for! It was fun, still had the monster high spirit and message. I wasnt ever bored or cringing. I honestly couldnt stop smiling and I hope they make more. My mom watched it with me and said she hoped for more too. Im going on 30 and shes going on 57. We had a nice time :happyhearts: (My bestie who also collects the dolls said she liked it too)

If I were to give a summary of my thoughts on the changes and such.. I would have to start further back about MH g2. The first/previous reboot was a way for Mattel to try and produce things a lot cheaper, correct things parents complained about, and come up with some new storylines that actually had a villain. I did like the first reboot movie even if I didnt agree with some changes since they had completely deleted some characters i liked, made Zombies bad, etc, but the movie was cute even if it had its flaws. Cant judge it all by its flaws. That entire reboot was rushed by Mattel in hopes of making money and thats the reason why it wasnt received well even if the movie had its cute moments.

With MH G3, this current reboot, they had their time to learn from mistakes, put actual thought into it, actual quality, and new aspects.

Surprisingly in my opinion the story more closely resembles the original monster high lore than it does the previous reboot. Originally in the MH universe there are different schools for different monsters and through the main girls showing equality among monster races, monster high decided to accept everyone and became the first All Monsters Are Welcome school. What matters is who you are, not what you are. Be yourself. Thats also what this new movies message is.

In the live action Clawdeen is half human and Monster High in a new interpretation is still in the same predicament of not everyone is welcome. Half humans arent welcome, even Gorgons as monsters are judged for their monster race as untrustworthy. This is much like original monster high was. Like the original, the main girls show equality among them to make monster high an accepting school. All monsters no matter where they came from are welcome, even humans.

I thought each character had a fun personality, and showed insecurities. Ones that relate to life. Frankie is having a hard time making friends and thinks something is wrong with her bc she doesnt think like everyone else. Clawdeen is scared to show her true self bc of being judged for something she cant change. Deuce has to be extra perfect all the time to give himself a good reputation bc everyone expects the worst of him just bc of who he is. Draculaura has to hide her passion from her father and the school bc she knows no one would approve even if shes done nothing wrong. I certainly have had to deal with all of those things in my life, all of which are extremely distressing. I liked relating to characters ive known and loved for years.

Even if back stories are changed, theyve been changed for a while now, im just happy these changes actually are good ( in my opinion). A lot of fun additions as well, such as the school being alive, a giant eye in the clock. Its clever! I really loved the atmosphere outside the school too, the monster swimming around!! I also really liked that Draculaura could call her dad through a painting. It just felt like a lot of thought and design went into it.

Its also important to note, such bright vibrant colors transferred onto live actors can be unusual but that doesnt inherently make it bad. I had been worried at first but everyone looked great and just like the dolls!

The music was so good too!! <3

I think in general there are just going to always be people who love, hate, dislike, or are neutral about reboots. Thats okay, everyone has the right to their own opinions. <3 Toys change, and their media does with it. Thats just the way it is and always will be. This is Monster Highs 3rd generation. Look at where MLP was at G3. It was totally different than G1 but still wonderful and fun. Even further, look where its gone with G4 MLP FiM, its wholly different from g1 aside from some villains and easter eggs they left in. That doesnt mean its bad, it was completely the opposite, it was amazing. I think its important to keep an open mind and if you still dont like it, then thats totally okay. You dont have to. <3

We all have the right to enjoy a fandom in the way we want to. Someone not liking something, doesnt mean its bad, it just means everyone has their own tastes and likes. Thats normal and we can all support each other as people who enjoy the same fandom despite how we feel on the matter. Im not saying anyone here has done otherwise, I only point this out bc ive seen a lot of extreme hate on social media and stuff :(. After all these years and a million toys of different generations I wish people would realize by now to get along as a fandom and not to try to prove whos opinions are best. The point is, everyone has opinions and thats okay, theres no need to fight over it. This is why i love the MLPTP bc we can all collect and love diff gens of ponies without judgement. We support each other and respect each others likes, even if we may not share the same likes. <3

We’re going to watch it for E’s benefit soon. E thinks it’s okay so far, just aimed at a ‘tween’ crowd. I’m not entirely sure what that means coming from a 13 year old.
