Unpopular Pony Opinions

I actually really like G4s ( not G4.5s though ), I have the same gripes about it like other people, like how there was too much of mane6 and I would've loved to see more non-show, original ponies. And while the sentiment, that they're less detailed and that the previous gens had a better sculpts is true, I still love them regardless,. Honestly, I just find them cute, they're fun to hold and looking at them makes me happy and there's honestly not much more to it than that.

But as a mini rant, when I was still part of the target demographic in the early 2010s, the thing that put me off of non-show ponies as a kid back then, was that they just used recolors of the mane6 for the packaging most of the time, which made them feel somewhat tacky to little me. I can understand WHY it was done but a better cost effective solution would've been to handle the ponies on the package, the same way they handled background ponies on the show, to have the same body with several mane and eyes variations ( that don't overlap with mane6's ).

Now, non-show G4s is what I'm mainly interested in, since, as an adult, I separate art on the package from the pony and enjoy the toy for what it is, but I still would, even now, prefer if they would've done it in the way mentioned above.
I'm honestly with you on that. What the G4 toys lack in diversity, they make up for in quality and cuteness. There's not as much variety, but they're pleasing to hold and look at like you said, and I think they deserve more credit! They're not my favorites, but they're far from being bad or bland.

The SDCC Twilight/Retro Mane Six Pack are the best new moulds that Hasbro have done in years.

I dont like twilight sparkle. she annoys me alot and i dont think shes a good friend most of the time. also dont like pipp because of her personality being the whole "teens and millenials on they dang phone all the time" thing and her random singing, also pipps design is just weird.:hmph:

I agre about Pipp. She’s the new main character that I just didn’t like. (I still have her toy because she’s purple :unsettled: )

I'm the opposite, Pipp is my favorite pony from the G5 movie. She just enormously funny. And the way she's a little bit fake feels very true to Twitch streaming / vtuber / youtuber culture (as opposed to just being "grrr, young people on phone bad"). Like, someone on the writing team definitely has a kid who is obsessed with some Minecrafter or makeup artist.

Also her and Zipp's contentious relationship is the most realistic depiction of sisterhood I've ever seen in MLP, lol. And all the tension over Pipp being the obvious favorite of their mom, that is my bread and butter.

I'm with Moondancer. I think she's a clever and well-written character; like, when you first see her, you're meant to think she's a parody of phone-obsessed teens, and then she ends up being just as complex as the rest of the cast. I honestly don't dislike any of the characters we've met in G5 so far. I think they're all really well-written and I can't wait to see more of them!

I guess that's my UO here: I have no reservations about G5. I think it's been a beautiful experience so far and firmly believe the series is in good hands. I'm not even hesitant about the YouTube shorts and its art shift, mainly because, well, they're low-stake YouTube shorts, I'm fine with them being low-budget.

Daffidazey’s tail colours reminds me of mixed playdough.

I don’t know if it’s just my Daffi though. Is anybody else’s like this?
I’ve been working on her again to get her hair and tail nice still after all this time since joining here. Progress is being made and I can see some colours brightening a bit but it still looks like a mixed playdough colour

I think I'll always love the G1 art style over any of the others. Like sure, I enjoyed FiM and the new G5 movie was very cute, but to me it feels like as time's gone on that the art style has gotten less and less "pony." I know multicolored, stumpy little horses can only look so much like ponies but the faces/muzzles are what really get me. Someone jokingly related the newer art styles to how pugs look now vs. how they used to look. xD

I don't mind the Pony Life art style. Don't get me wrong, the actual show is really low quality, and the brushable toys look more like knockoff Littlest Pet Shops than ponies, but the show's art style itself and some of the toys with molded manes and tails look pretty cute.

That was is my mind as well. I have a G4.5 Rarity and she looks like a white cat, however, I like her. And I thought Hasbro mixed up MLP and LPS. I must catch up a little bit, a few months ago I didn't realised that G4.5 exist, I was stuck on G4 and G5 is already here. Pony Life design is odd. From G4 and up the figurines barely resemble a horse... G4 is cute in a way, but can't compare the innocent, roundy design of G1.
And I think it is unpopular, but I almost missed G2 (I have a McDonald's figurine only) and for me that design is also a little bit odd. Horse-like but somehow... they "keep a distance". Less cartoony, I mean. G3 went back to cartoon ponies.

I agree.... The G2 style of pony was always a little off to me, compared to G1 and 3 and I could never really figure out what it was. Still cute, but something was weird about them. Maybe because the had smaller heads and tall thin bodies? I don't know.

Oh well, I really don't like Gen2, Gen3.5 or Gen4, at this point. I keep getting a bunch of them, because I buy a lot here or a lot there to get the G1s in the lot....so I have a box of Gen4 and I just keep throwing them in the box. Eventually it'll fill up and I'll want to sell some I guess to make room. But, that procedure is what got me my first G3s, and I DO like those a lot....so, it all works out well in the end.

I really like the Beddy Bye Eye ponies. Theyre annoying to fix and can look creepy but I do really like them.

Im struggling to think of anything else :DD

I think some flaws on ponies are okay and dont always need to be fixed. Flaws from their years tell the story. I dont think you always have to make them look brand new. Faded hair is charming in its own right, a snip of cut hair has personality and nostalgia. If its something huge though Id definitely fix it for the pony. <3

Yes! As satisfying as a pristine collectors piece is, one of my favorite things about collecting toys is knowing they were loved and played with. I have a Duffy Bear with the name "Alex" written on the tag, and I smile every time I see it thinking about the adventures this teddy went on before coming to live with me.

I was rhunking about G2 a bit... The G1 cartoon series are released on DVD in Hungary in the 2000s, and the cover is a sum up of MLP: G1 cartoon, G3 logo and inside it has a colouring page with G2 figurines. I have some disks and just noticed that they are actually G2. And as I look at them, I have the feeling that these ponies are elegant, but silent magical creatures. Like mystic unicorns in the forest. I know that the animated cartoon of MLP is only a part of the franchise (I think the animation was less important before G4), but I can't really imagine them as talking characters, like G1 or G3. So I don't say I don't like the design but I find it a bit odd. But G4 was definitely the biggest design change for me.
