Update- Patchwork found his home

Yes, if you see someone actually striking a dog, definitely try to get some photographic proof then let the authorities know. You can do it anonymously and allow the police to handle it, so you don't have bad blood with the neighbours. But no one should purposely harm an animal and think they can just get away with it.

I'm definitely closest to Fluttershy when it comes to occupations, sorta tied with Applejack.
Oh, ok. They already hate me anyways. It isn't first time they had issues with police :S

Flutterjack? Or Appleshy?

I like da sound o' Flutterjack. Sounds like a tasty pancake.

Oh no :(. What a horrible owner :( disgusting! I'm sorry that you did have to return the dog back Moondream! But what foofoo says it makes sense.. I hope they will treat him better from now on..

Man, Moondream. I wish I could tell you that yours is an isolated incident. Owners caught neglecting an animals will often become aggressive, turning on the rescuer. When this happens, you have to maintain a professional attitude and calmly inform the person that you have detailed the animal's condition with both photographs and witnesses. Tell them firmly but politely that it is a criminal offense to neglect an animal, and assure them while you are returning the animal to them this time, you will be making report of the incident to the local authorities, who may decide to become involved as well. It usually shuts them up pretty fast, because they know they're in the wrong. If the law gets involved, they can even end up in jail.

Always take photos, loads and loads of them. Have a friendly vet who will assess the situation and will write up the incident. If an animal is severely abused or neglected, do NOT return them. Contact the appropriate legal entities (the police in town, the sheriff in the country) and any animal protection groups immediately so they can help you make the right decision for the animal. Sometimes the vet will house an endangered animal rather than allow the owner to take possession.

If you ever need help, just lemme know! I've been doing this about 2 decades now, so I know the ropes/procedures. Laws vary in all states of course, but Florida is probably pretty similar to TX as we're both purdy rednecky states. :D

It sucks but I know some people are going to be nasty. It's just so hard having to give the pup back when I know something is wrong. I did take a ton of pictures and next time I will call the authorities to alert them about the dog. Going to the vet is an awesome idea. We thought we could get a write up from the groomer but a vet would be a lot better. I should have thought things out better but this is my first time dealing with something like this. Hopefully I'll learn as I go along :)

Thank you so much for all the great advice! Dang, 2 decades? You really dog have a big heart! Helping one animal is tough I can't imagine how you deal with a whole farm full of rescues!

I am too but I'm really hoping that someone calling her out on her behavior will make her change her ways. All I can do is hope.

I've rescued one or two here and there since I was young, but right before my husband died I dove headfirst into serious work (including, I am ashamed to admit, stealing a few dogs from a very bad situation. I should have gone the legal route, but was afraid the dogs didn't have enough time. Looking back, I know it was maybe right for the dogs, but very wrong in a legal/moral sense. Now I'm more savvy, and can operate more properly). After he died, I just went into it whole hog (excuse the piggy pun!) because after his death, I needed to surround myself with life.

You'll learn lots with each rescue. Don't worry, you'll do great! There will be triumphs and losses. Sometimes you won't be able to help, but never give up. You are the lifeline for some animals. Without you, they may well not make it. If you cannot help them personally, build a network of people who possibly can step in where you cannot. Never feel alone, because there are people eager and willing to join the cause.

Every victory, even the tiniest field mouse, is a light left burning, and without those multitudes of lovely little lights, our world becomes a darker place.

I am immensely proud of you.

This kind of made me cry. This speech is one of the best in the world.

I'm so sorry that #%{^* took Patchwork from you. Sometimes people are greedy enough to not give a crap about their dog and only care about themselves. I still can't believe people like this exist in the world.

I FOR ONE, VOTE FOR DOGGYCARE!

I've done the same thing. Ever since I was a little kid I've always loved animals. I've always tried to take in abandoned animals. Now that I'm older I'm really glad I can actually do something more than just taking in more pets and giving food to stray cats. Honestly I don't think you stealing is wrong if it prevented suffering for the dogs. I bet your husband would be so proud that you took your grief and put it towards helping those who can't help themselves :)

I think I need to do as you did and learn as I go. I need to learn more about the laws, learn how to handle different animals, learn how to deal with angry owners. You're so right. There are a lot of animals who need help and I might be the only person to take the time to help them. I don't have much to give but I'm more than happy to give all that I have. I'm very lucky I'm working with a wonderful no kill animal shelter who is always ready to help. I have my awesome partner who deals with chaos. And I have a great friend in you. Your encouragement, all your great advice, and your support is so great to have and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It also means a lot to know you're proud of me. I have pretty low self esteem so hearing someone is genuinely proud and thinks I can do well at something means more than you'll ever know.

I have some news that I think will make you pretty happy. Tonight my Mom and I are volunteering at a five mile run for the animal shelter. I'm in no condition to run so I'm handing out drinks and cookies to the runners. Last year they raised over five thousand dollars and they want to double it this year. If this year goes well they're going to build another huge shelter just for pregnant mama dogs and cats so they can nurse and bond with their babies in peace. I think it will also have a spay and neuter clinic attached to it. It's going to be a really neat project :D

I am too. Honestly if I ever see Patchwork again in bad condition on the streets I'm going to do what Bunny said: take him to the vet and get him to write an evaluation about his condition. I just hope that doesn't happen and the woman changes her ways.
