I was really upset two days ago when a baby bird fell from a nest high in the tree during a storm and died. Then yesterday that same momma bird lost another baby from her nest during the downpours early in the morning. All she could do was sit on top of the bird in the grass. Well, that wasn't going to work. Cats, ants and everything else would have killed that baby in seconds.
So, I picked the baby up in a pillow case. I made a nest out of an agressive vine I have in the yard. Then we looked for an old nest I could actually reach by ladder and placed the new nest on top of the old one for stability. We could not reach the original nest it was too high. Then, I climbed the ladder and placed the baby in the nest using that pillowcase.
I said a prayer.
I watched for hours hoping the momma would return, find and watch her baby. I knew if she didn't the baby wouldn't make it through the night. This morning I went outside and didn't see the momma or the baby. Its pretty high though in the tree.
I felt sad.
Then DH went out to check and he yelled out to me to come and see. The mamma was with her baby. We could see the baby was still in the nest I made for it and they were interacting with each other. She was sitting next to the nest and watching over her baby. You can't see the baby in the photo, but I am soooooooo happy this little guy has a chance and momma has claimed her fuzzy back. Finally something is going right! It was cute seeing the baby's little head pop up from the nest right next to his or her momma. He made it through the night. Now we just need to pray he makes it through the bad weather that we are supposed to have today.

In the future you can make a makeshift nest for a baby bird who has fallen out of it's nest and can't be put back. You'll need a plastic container like a margarine tub with several holes poked in it for drainage and you put old washcloths and/or clean paper towels in it and nail it to as high a place (like a big tree) you can reach and put the baby(s) inside and the mum should find them and come back

Yea I noticed the daddy must be over there now because there is another dove hanging out with the mom. LOL I am hoping she doesn't have to watch two different nests, but who knows. Usually they have like 2-3 babies and I know one died in the storms so that may have left her two. One in one nest and one here in this nest, but I am not sure. At least the live in boyfriend/dad has been helping her. lol

Well, the birds could not ride out the storm. The nest is there but both have disappeared. I have a flooded yard and will check for them when the water goes down. Very sad.
