What kind of collector are you?

Are you more of a completionist? If so, what do you count as "complete" - certain sets or an entire generation of ponies? Is merch/playsets part of the "completion"?

Or do you collect ponies that you like, and leave the rest?

Do you have concrete collection goals or just pick up what you find (or do a mix of both)?

In short, how are you approaching your collection?

For me, I mostly collect ponies I visually like, or the few that I have an emotional connection to (such as certain characters I love or certain ponies I once had). I used to not have actual collecting goals but ever since outlining a wishlist, I've been much more satisfied with my purchases knowing that for me, I'm collecting towards the goal of completing that list someday (I likely will never actually finish it, but I really like the structure it gives me).

Share your thoughts below! :flutter2:

For me when it comes to "complete" it just means having the ponies alone, for example I have the complete Merry Go Round Ponies (ponies only, no accessories or whatever they originally came with and I am completely happy with that)

I find a few goal ponies that I NEEEEEEEED but im not tryin to get like "the whole American collection" or ponies or anything :) I get what I mostly like, or use the rule "no pony left behind" if they arent wallet drainers.

I think for me, I just get what I like or if I find one, I may decide to get it so I don’t regret it if they’re gone. I don’t know really, depends how much I like it.
If it’s one I already have then I’m happy to leave it if it’s in a charity shop or something like that. I don’t like having doubles but it can’t be helped if they were given to me like my inherited ponies. I kind of feel I have a responsibly to look after them as they were given to me and also they’ve always been there. They are childhood ponies.
If it’s a one I had that has gone missing then I’m willing to get again unless I had gotten rid of it for a reason. Missing pieces that have gotten lost give a feeling of incompleteness

I think the way I collect things may have changed from since I was little. I like completeness but I also like having what I like rather then being “I don’t really like this but it’s here for collection purposes…”
I have different collections so it’s probably a bit different for each one but most of them aren’t on the go anymore. I say they’re complete now for me.
If it’s a set I really like, I would want them all. An example being the Ty Beanies Babies Zodiac collection. I don’t have a particular set with ponies I’m aiming for but seeing as about 90% of my ponies are all from childhood, I didn’t aim for a complete set either. I think I like how I was collecting back then with just getting whatever I wanted rather being too strict with myself being “I must get this. Then this” and being “ooh I like that, I’ll get it”. I would like to get ones I wanted as little kid though too for sure someday. Maybe it’ll be like a completion of an ideal childhood herd?

This year I want to cut back on collecting after being really badly feeling “I have too much stuff” at some point last year. I already have a few new ponies this year though which wasn’t intended but they were there, I hadn’t got them before and didn’t want to miss out on them.

Basically, if I like it, I get it. If it’a what I already have, I don’t want it. Doubles are a no

It's always interesting to see everyone's collecting styles and levels of "completionist" mine seem to transform as I reach them. My goal was always to complete the US collection and for me that meant, all US ponies, not including accessories or petites but as I got closer and closer to finishing I started branching off cause it's like, once your done, then what? Part of the fun is finding new things!
So I started getting more accessories, getting into a lot of the merchandise, which I always loved anyway. I feel like you can't be too much of a completionist with merch cause there are just SO many things and I feel the same with international ponies, I mean there are some really hard to find foreign ponies. I can't imagine getting all of those too.

So my goals are all US ponies and just the international ones that I really like.
At least 1 version of all accessories, all of the pony wear, all MLP stickers, puzzles, games and coloring books, 1 version of each style back card, all playsets with accessories, all of the plushies, all stamps, mommy charms, pretty much all merch I can get my hands on without going too crazy and all UK comics. This is all just G1 though, I haven't branched out to other gens.....yet. LOL

I’ve never really considered myself a collector cause I open up packages even on expensive/hard to find things, I don’t display them behind glass to keep dust away or anything like that, and I don’t try to get whole sets. I just get the ones that I like (and can afford lol) :lolpony:

I buy what I like and can afford. I don't have any rhythm or rhyme to it. I'm not a completionist, because there's always at least one pony I don't like/can't afford.

I have decided that I want at least one pony from each generation in my collection, not including half gens, because they're still part of 3 and 4 and I don't truly consider them their own separate thing.

It’s difficult because I’m a completionist that doesn’t want to be one, but I’m very OCD. That being said sometimes they are just too expensive and having everything seems like a lot. In the end I just buy sets I feel the need to complete.

I am a completionist but I don't like certain sets. For example I love these cute detailed sets but ill refuse to buy the copy paste blind bags 81cIzGJfOnL._AC_SL1500_.jpg
I am collecting whatever deals I can find for each generation I have a little bit of everything
My more completed set is the sdcc exclusives thats on my priority list
Except for the 80s style that they came out with I did not like that specific one

I started out with completing everything, then sold 90% of them. Now there are a few g4’s that we’re looking for, the super long hair G3’s mib, blossoms and baby blossoms from every country (dream big!), purple ponies, and customs. My daughter is going with so softs, galaxy, and every heart throb she can get, Nirvana, custom, alternate, etc.

I am not a completist, I only have ponies I like in my collection. Saying that, I still have a lot of complete sets in my collection.
My main focus is brushables, but I do have some selective plush, blind bags, merch, etc. I collect G1-4, not including the .5 generations. I’m not a fan of any of the G5 toys I’ve seen so far, so I won’t have to rearrange the pony room to get those in. This is both a relief and a disappointment to me.

I'm not a completionist, neither in terms of sets nor in terms of "entire G1 European releases", I basically buy what I like, but I've recently become a bit obsessed with trying to find as many accessories (including brushes / combs) as possible. Only the ones that originally came with ponies I own mind you.

I initially had just one goal, which I reached sometime last year: to collect all ponies with a cat symbol (G1 and G3, I don't collect other generations). So, as @Gingerbread already mentioned, what do you do once you've completed a goal? You're looking for the next one. :p So my long-term goal (which I might never finish, as some brushes and combs are near-impossible to find) is to find all my ponies' matching accs.

In terms of ponies, I do have set myself a limitation to only buy as many ponies as my display cabinet can hold. Well, what can I say? It's full now, but I do have some space on our bookshelf, so a few special ponies can move there.

I don't buy MIB because I'm the same way LOL. I would free all the ponies!

I think I might fall into the "Gotta Catch 'Em All" category. :winkpony:
To be honest, when I think completionist I think of you, Jewel! :lolpony:

Thanks for all the responses, it's so interesting seeing everyone's different philosophies :)

I’ve put a lot of thought into this topic and my answers. Firstly, I collect G1 & G4 sprinkled with a lil’ bit of G2 (just ones I really like and find locally).
For my G1 gang I’ve recently significantly scaled back my collection to be strictly boys, pegasus and unicorns (and random ponies I really like or had as a child). For some reason I can’t yet “separate” with my babies that don’t fall in the above categories. O_O
G4 I need one of everything and I got into that because “they’re so small and take up less space.” I was very wrong about that especially because I love Pinkie and Flutters so yeah… I got a lot of G4. Recently I’ve been leaning towards getting a lot of my G4 things in box if they’re flat on the back so I can easily display on my walls without shelving.
I would very much like to own all the “Clover” ponies by name because of my puppers Clover.

I also collect Fairy Tails birds and Lady Lovely Locks. I need every single one of them. These lines aren’t nearly as large as MLP. She says as she tries to convince herself she not a crazy hoarder of all things colourful.

I'd love to see photos of your collection if you have any! Sounds awesome :)

Well, my pony room has been needing a reorganizing and I started this thread to motivate me to get on with it but seeing as my last update was over 6 months ago, you see how often it's put on the back burner! I really need to move it up the priority list!

here is just a sneak peek of what you see when you walk by. I was trying to coyly leave out the mess LOL maybe this topic will inspire me to knock off another thing on the to-do list next weekend since it's a long weekend :)

OMG the pony goodness... I love the "because it makes me happy. next question." Thanks for sharing!! because now I can live vicariously through this picture

I'm apparently not as big a collector as most people on here as my entire collection will fit on top of a wardrobe, along with a vintage globe and some astronauts. I also have a few special ones on a different shelf next to my bed.

I've also never dusted them so they all look like they've been living in a dumpster.
