Where is the money coming from?

Seriously. I keep seeing people on my Facebook pony group posting and boasting about ponies they have bought and these folks are regularly spending hundreds of dollars on ponies (hard to find, mail orders etc). The part that I'm baffled at is where this money is coming from. I look at their photos and many of these people are very young (teen to early twenties). I don't get it. Before I lost my job, I was making very good money for an adult and I never would have spend so frivolously. What am I missing here? Are there that many collectors who are independently wealthy? Are their parents funding this habit? Or do kids get jobs now and just spend every cent they have on things they want with no thought to the future?

Incidentally, I just missed out on a local pick up for two MOC ponies. The girl who did pick them up, has listed them for sale at like four times what she paid. I guess I don't think of collecting in terms of making a profit, but maybe this is how some people are funding their spending.

I think it’s just the culture now. They got lucky on buying and reselling once and got a rush, so now they do it more and more.

That’s why there’s shows like Storage Wars, and American Pickers.... people like to see things from their past and re-sell for profit. Even if they’re not educated in the item they just buy and hope for the best. It’s all in supply and demand and right now MLP is popular.

We will see how many are still around this time next year after the finial season of our G4 friends comes to an end. We will probably find a lot of people fall off the bandwagon and prices will fall again as they all loose interest again.

Here's hoping, but I fear the competition will get stiffer, because the MLP episode of The Toys that Made Us will be soon be out. I'm feeling stupid pressure to complete my G1 collection before they are priced so high that I won't even consider buying them. I still need like 150. That's a lot.

Right? I'm still selling like 40 G1's and my prices are actually cheaper than what most are pricing, but because I'm in Canada, I keep losing sales because of the shipping cost.

That’s like the only time being Canadian sucks and I completely despise it. Lol Like, if I’m paying for the shipping - what does it matter how much it costs? You still have to go to the post office and send the darn things! :(

Ahaha!!! 150 is a better number than what I need. Remember how I said I only wanted to do Pegasus and Unicorn ponies? Well now I want to finish off my So Soft collection and “Sparkley” ponies too.... Maybe also my Twinkle Eyes... and Big Brothers (because I love them)................

I notice mainly they seem to be people from very well off families with a good deal of disposable income. I can only assume once they get out into the 'real world' their frivolous spending will come to an abrupt end. It certainly makes competition difficult. Running an animal sanctuary, I basically burn money every month on feed. But that of course is on me, I did choose this life.

Still though. Ponies... whineeeeeeee

yes! I just saw an amazing lot on facebook marketplace with dabbles, diamond dreams and a bunch of other beautiful ponies for $20, I messaged the seller and I was apparently next in line but they sold  next thing I know they are listed on facebook, mecari, and ebay for $300 and they sold! she didn't even keep any because she had them all! I am angry because I would not have sold them for sure no matter what because I would have felt guily to the person who listed them and I would have really loved them:(

You run an animal sanctuary? Really? That's awesome. You're awesome. Darn good people on here.

Same happened to me with that local pick up. I would have kept those for myself.

Toy flippers make it really hard sometimes. I know they have a right to make money, it's just I have such awful luck getting *anything* I feel terribly jealous.

We're on our 19th year! We used to adopt out tons and tons of pups and cats, but many of the animals ended up worse off than ever, so instead we now home them until they pass away. It means I can't take in as many as I once did, but I can give top notch care to those who stay. I take in dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, livestock, and do wildlife rehab, including reptiles and birds of prey. I love it, but my injury has hampered so much. If not for my son (Action Hank here on the board) I would be doomed.

I understand nowadays people just think mylittlepony is gold they now that there are so many collectors out there wanting them so they up the prices it's ridiculous we might be collecting them but that doesn't mean we want to pay ridiculous prices like goodwill only putting it on their online store and on eBay it's not really fair for collectors like me and you to pay these ridiculous prices I can't afford these prices it's not easy we have lives that we have to take care of before we can even buy anything it's hard these days hopefully will get better someday I doubt it

A. They live with parents and spend their own work money with no thoughts of the future (I USE TO DO THAT AND MY DAD WAS SOOOO ANNOYED)

B. They are older, live on their own work good jobs and buy stuff cause they can

C. Work but are irresponsible and take tons of loans out or overuse credit so their banks start doing chargebacks (these aren't so common)

You're probably right. Until I lost my job, I fell into category B, except even though I was making more money than most people will ever make, I still never spent like this. Never.

I think maybe it has something to do with what I think something is reasonably worth. I just flat out refuse to pay obscene prices for anything. Ever single piece of furniture in my house was bought second hand (or third or fourth hand). I guess I was never raised with the "I must have the best of everything" idea that some people have.

My little brother falls into a combination of A and B. He still lives at home, but he's got obscene amounts of money in savings, so his spending on frivolous things is acceptable. He has pretty good taste, too, isn't a collector, and makes my mom happy.

I’ve been B for a long long time. I too always buy most things second hand, I grew up with a single mother on a tight budget. I know a deal when I see it.

That being said I have a difficult time doing things or spending money on myself on “fun” things. I always have a little guilt after a purchase but when it’s something that’s been previously loved, I feel better about it.

Also, since I’ve moved back home and since I’ve been having issues with my MS I’ve spent more on ponies since I’m not being social or driving much at all anymore. :/ You live, you learn I guess.
