I managed to get ahold of a pink stockinged goth looking Princess Celestia and after doing some research I found she was part of the G4 Pony Mania set and I was looking at them and I have decided I need the whole set but I need it MIP. My question is why is the packaging different on these?

Not my pictures taken from google images.

The lower one is an international release.

Ditto... I am just guessing, btw. I just know G3 boxes had differences like that depending on what country they released it in.

Sorry to be dense, but what's the difference?

Edit: Ohhh the ponies are in different places! Hmmm, that's a mystery!

Sorry to be dense, but what's the difference? Aside from the TRU logo moving. (Is it a sticker? Maybe they just stuck it somewhere else?)
The ponies are in a different arrangement, too. I've only personally seen the lower one. The upper has twilight at the upper right instead of pinkie pie. Maybe it's just a second run? Also... I gave up wanting this set since apple jack is missing. Why is it always Apple jack left out or made a shorter run of?

I didn't even notice Apple Jack was missing. That is a bummer. I have been looking into buying both but can only find people selling the international (lower one). It could be the top one is a really good bootleg. I have seen some pretty convincing bootlegs before.

My theory is that being "the RESPONSIBLE one who has to WORK HARD!" isn't as much of a selling point with little girls as being "the one animals love" or "the pony who is super duper magical", lol.

I mean, working hard is good and important, but I'm not sure if it's gonna get an "OH BOY, OH BOY" reaction from most kids. :lolpony:

Good point. I just always liked Apple jack. She made it into 3 generations! She was also the very first pony that my pink loving daughter picked out herself.

That’s probably true, plus she doesn’t have the most fun color scheme to kids either, just orange with yellow hair. Bright rainbow hair, pink and purple or floofy pink are more attention grabbing. I’d personally like the applejack toys better if they actually gave her her hat more often

It's inconsequential, but I also noticed that the background lace-like pattern's coloring is different between the two. One is purple while the other is black.

Also I am pretty sure Ali Express was doing bootleg versions of these at one point. I think they were selling them individually, though?

AJ without a hat definitely looks just too strange haha. Personally I've never cared much for AJ in any generation (later G4 being an exception actually), but her early G4 days especially rubbed me the wrong way. They started off really strong with having her refer to semi-figurative addition as "fancy mathematics" in episode 3. It felt like a bad stereotype and I wonder if that's a part of the consideration as well.

Yes!! Her hat is so awesome. I wish she had it in more releases.

I’d like it if she had her freckles as well. It had crossed my mind to give my Applejack her freckles back but I won’t, don’t want to mess her up in any way if I do a bad job. I’d like more freckle ponies

Right? Especially on plush, like you can probably find one to put on the little brushables but who has cowboy hats laying around that’ll fit a plush pony lol.
@Glistening Rainlight i didn’t really notice that but I didn’t watch the show very regularly. That is a little much though ^^;

Oh yes, I love her white freckles. It's so weird that only a few of her G4 toys have them, yet almost every G4 toy has eyebrows? Give us the freckles!

My first thought was actually "Maybe kids don't buy orange ponies as much", but there were a lot of G3 orange ponies (so apparently they were selling) and they made G5 Sunny Starscout orange. So that can't be it.

G1 Applejack was a really popular pony in the 80s, which is why I wondered if it had more to do with her G4 personality.
