'80s vs '07: Moonstone

First things I noticed when I saw them in the store was the poorer symbol quality, ugly face, small eyes and the screw up with the blue and green streaks in the hair (which was the main thing I was sad about.). Oh, and the cheapo stickers. XD

But they're rainbow ponies - which I love - and so I bought them anyway. And I don't regret it because I think the box sets are quite cute overall and I don't have two of the ponies of the original set. :3

I personally think they did a pretty good job. I was really excited when I saw them. Perhaps they were making them a bit obviously different like the much brighter colors and such while keeping them close enough in looks so that people couldn't try to sell them claiming they were the vintage ponies?

I had been thinking about that too - particularly with the switch between the green and blue streaks in the hair as that's not really immediately obvious so it doesn't change the pony too drastically. It'd make sense to make sure that people don't get the vintage and the new ones confused.

Thanks for putting up the photos showing the differences between the two! I still have mine in their boxes so I've not been able to compare them carefully. :D

I'm not a great fan of the re-releases, at least not the rainbow ones, which are the only ones I've seen proper pictures of. I think it's mostly the eyes, and the hair. I hate G3 hair, no matter what you do with it it always frizzes, and never ever seems to settle into that lovely silky "flip" that the G1s so often had right out of the box (or at least achieved with a little careful combing) plus it feels so plasticy!

I do think though, that if I came across the re-release of the original 6 I'd probably buy them, just to have them as I never got the originals, despite being a child of the 80s myself, I was still a bit young when they first came out. It would be nice to have some version of the 6 girls that started it all..

Thanks for posting these pics!
I got the Collectors pose retros and ended up trading them.
The plastic seems too hard but the thing that really bothers me is the eyes!! I can't even put my finger on it but something is just not right..
I think I like the retro rainbows abit better than the CP though. The ribbons even felt cheap. Then again, you can never top an original!

80s is the best... look at the gorgous slightly chubbier face. Nothing compares to an 80's pony. Also you know the 80's pony already has a history... the new one can only dream about... until 20 years down the line when it will too have a history ;)
Unless the poor thing is kept in a box all it's life xD

Wow, her face looks longer too! I wish they had given the re-releases bigger eyes; the 80s version looks more friendly. :[

Thanks for the comparison! :] I don't have the new release yet, so this was very helpful!

When the colletor's Retros came out I wish Hasbro would make Retro Rainbows. And Hasbro did. But why do they not really appeal to me as I thought they would be? I think it's because of their heads. The heads are just not as cute as the 80s heads.
But, I think I still want those Retro Rainbows....I've been longing for them just a long time.

Of course the 80's pony will win in my heart, but honestly, I like the remakes too. I like that hasbro acknowledged the anniversary at all and tried to make a reproduction. I love looking at them. They make me feel the way I felt when I got my first ponies MIP. I think they get a bad rap because they are not exact. I that about them. They are G1 but G3 at the same time. :)

Whoa, I never noticed the order of the rainbow hair being different until you pointed it out, and I immediately went to look at mine and was surprised I didn't notice before. I keep my re-releases in the box, so it was nice to see this comparison. The dieting fact is kinda funny! There have been other comparison shots posted, but these were really great. Thanks for sharing!

Also, although they are different from the original ponies, I'm still happy Hasbro released them. I like them so much better than the G3's and wish there were more re-releases.

I never got the rainbows because I couldn't get past the cheapness and the dead eyes. They just don't have the same personality and warmth to them. I have a set of the CP ones though..found 'em at a thrift store. They really are hard plastic compared to the originals.. and their colors are just not right. They're too bright and processed looking, if that makes sense. They have cheap hair and bad eyes too.

If Hasbro plans to make more re-releases.. I hope they do a better job next time. I don't necessarily mean they should exactly re-create the vintage ones.. but maybe, at least, try to put some personality into the gals!

They were reissued in 2007... with slight differences to the vintage ponies. I don't own any reissues and don't plan to own any. G3/ Reissues to me was not nor is my era of collecting. I am faithful to the old ones. I am glad they differ so i don't accidently buy them thinking they are vintage.

Interesting. I had no idea o.o it's too bad, too, because I probably would have picked up at least a few of them had I known when they came out. Bummers.

Unfortunately in Greece never did apppear on shelves the '07 Moonstone or any other repro of '80s ponies... i think that the '80s ponies are much better!:RotCol:However i would buy some repros in order to customize them!I have the greek version of '80s Moonstone that is awesome and slightly different from the one shown above in the pics. Moonstone was my sister's favourite pony!:RotCol::RotCol::RotCol:

I was never able to find the second run of the G1 rereleases. I'd love to see close ups of all of them.. does anyone know where I could find some decent pictures?

By the looks of things Hasbro got these repro ponies completely re-scuplted, using the originals for reference.

Lol, seems like a waste of money on Hasbos part, as it would have been cheaper to dig out the old moulds, come on there must be some knocking about all the many factories.

Oh well, I still think they're cute, I love having them in their boxes, but I have to admit they're not a pacth on the 80's girlies:)

After Rainbow Dash's house, which represents the spectrum as pink-pink-red-pale yellow-blue, it's safe to say that the answer is "no".

Hah, good one!

I hate G3 hair, no matter what you do with it it always frizzes, and never ever seems to settle into that lovely silky "flip" that the G1s so often had right out of the box (or at least achieved with a little careful combing) plus it feels so plasticy!

I've got no problem with G3 hair, at least not the stuff on the early years of G3s. G2 hair is what always gave me issues. Sure, I haven't tried on too many occasions, but I'm sort of convinced that G2 hair is un-stylable. Water just rolls off it, like it's greased down. (I love my G2s - I just wish their hair didn't stand up all over the place.)

And like other people are saying, these just never showed up in my area. I'd get one of the sets of three if I saw one (and these ones tend to linger, judging by the CP release), but at this point I'll probably look to buy just one at the Pony Fair this summer. I don't need a whole trio, after all.

Thanks for posting comparison photos! I actually like the retro release ponies. Of course I'm partial to the originals, but the retro's weren't so bad. I like how they are different. I mean, how boring would they have been if they were EXACTLY the same as the old ones? ;)

Thanks for posting the photos. I KNEW I wasn't crazy when I thought they were different. Actually I started buying G3's a few months ago about when the repros came out, and I saw the pictures and thought "wow, I don't remember my old ponies being that ugly. Oh well, guess I'll just collect G3's then." (sorry to those of you who like them but the repros appeal to me about as much as G2). Anyway, so it took me a while to realize that the G1's are in fact as awesome as I remember, and now I have some 80s ponies again and I LOOOOOOOOOVE them!!!
