a few questions about G3 hoof magnets...

I'm doing a research project for school about magnets in everyday life and me and a friend are both doing G3 pony hoof magnets. However, it's harder then I expected. I've got a bit on how big they are, what they do, but I have a couple of questions...

Does anyone know what metal they are made of? I'm assuming it's iron or a mixture of different metals with iron being the most prominent.

Do they have any negative effects at all? (I know they can mess with computer equipment with prolonged exposure)

What about positive effects?

Does anyone have any general information that could be of any use to me? Anything would be appreciated! Thank you! ^-^

You can also cause problems with the ol' cathrode tube televisions with them. It didn't seem to cause permanent damage but it does really weird stuff to the colors. Maybe you could use them to manually degauss the monitor, too. Some ponies made with the softer plastics will deform in time, the deformation can be influenced by the leg being 'pulled' but I doubt it actually causes it.

As for positives, ones with really strong magnets will stick to stuff vertically?.. it's a space saving feature!

Thank you very much! This information helped to beef up the project a bit, and I quoted you too!

I try and keep them off the laptop as a precaution.

It was a very startling discovery about the magnets for me. I didn't know about it until one day I was grooming a load of them and I picked up Sparkleworks and she had a pair of nail scissors stuck to her hoof :shockpony: I thought I was either hallucinating or I was actually gonna be killed by one of my ponies!!!!! Eep!!

I've had my G3's pick up paperclips and staples, I'll move them around and about 25 paperclips come too XD

Wow, that must have been scary!

My cat has a magnetic collar and she picks up massive nails and once a pair of scissors!

The negatives will be whatever there is for magnets. Damaging tvs, computers, pace makers, etc. Wiping magnetic media such as VHS.

The only real positives is that it added a layer of interactivity to the toys, but considering how strong the magnets are, it's not worth the potential damage a kid could cause.

Most laptops use solid-state drives these days, don't they? Sticking ponies to it won't improve performance but I'm not sure they'd actively cause damage. Now, the platter drives used by most desktops would definitely be at risk but the chances of getting a pony stuck inside the computer case at any sort of angle to be effective are next to nil.

I know the feeling with scissors, though. I have a headless custom in progress on my desk who is serving a valuable use in holding some re-hairing needles. How helpful!

Oh! This had me laughing out loud! I would have been terrified for a moment, too. Too much imagination! And too many Chucky movies!

Another issue that I can think of is that if a kid swallowed some magnets it would be really bad. One isn't that bad, but if you swallow two or more they stick together and can cause problems in the intestines. If they get lodged in, you would need surgery to have them removed.

I had a metal desk lamp when I was a kid that I put some flower magnets on. It really drained the life of the lightbulb and after replacing 3 or 4 bulbs in the space of a few months my mom removed the magnets. No more prematurely replaced lightbulbs after that. I imagine that the same principal applies to pony magnets (those things are strong!)

I used to hang my magnetic ponies on the fridge in college. It was always a great conversation starter and it held post-it notes in place!
