G1 Basic Fun Retro Ponies: A Collector's Guide

Still waiting on Aurora to hopefully drop soon, she’s my favorite one and likely the only one I’ll be getting, but I’m so excited :ponylove:

I was able to order the Celestial ponies from Walmart and they're supposed to arrive tomorrow. I'm so excited to get them, especially my favorite one, Polaris. It's strange about Aurora not being available yet. I keep checking for her. I noticed the others went out of stock and then they were back in stock. I'm hoping Aurora will be in stock soon! She reminds me of Melody. I also found the pearlized Cotton Candy and Blossom set at Target. I would have been inclined to skip them, but I have pearlized Baby Blossom and Baby Cotton Candy so it just felt like I should get them.

Now available on Amazon:

Are scalpers something I need to be seriously concerned about? Has it happened before with Basic Fun releases? I am hoping to find Aurora at Walmart, but I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and order her from Amazon..

The things is, I would imagine these as way more popular since they're brand new G1 ponies and not re-releases.

So happy, as both my niece and I scored them! Thanks to you all for letting us know when they were available! And best pony luck to any of you who want them!

Scalpers (as in people who buy up retail-priced items in order to try to resell them for exorbitant prices online, for those new to the phrase) have been around since the dawn of time, and certainly since the G1 days:

Obviously these are CPK, but same idea. In the video, the reporter says to a woman, "You just paid $50 for a doll that costs $20?" And she says, "Yes."

I'll have to do a deeper dive later for credible sources for a story that suggests that there was a truck accident in the 80's, and the truck was full of CPK parts, and there was a massive backup caused by people stopping to try to grab the CPK heads rolling around the side of the road. Again, need a confirmed source for that one. ;)

But, should we worry? I don't think so.

We have each other to help us get what we're looking for at retail prices, and scalpers will not be able to buy these new ponies in a large enough quantity to affect the market for quite some time. As the years pass and they're no longer available, their value will go up (as will their scarcity), and they may start to get the insane prices they ask. But for now, since these items are pretty readily available (taking restocking into consideration), I wouldn't worry. Just try to get them while they're in stores, and you won't have to do business with scalpers.

I would go ahead and get her from Amazon, since she's available. There's just a lot of unpredictability with Walmart in general.

Didn’t this also happen with Ty Beanie Babies?

I hadn’t heard of a version with Beanie Babies. It’s entirely possible that it’s just a successfully-circulated urban legend—though the mental image of a bunch of adults in the 80s chasing down CPK heads as they roll down the side of the freeway is pretty entertaining, imo.

If it were ponies though, wouldn’t we do the same thing? ;)

I’m gonna wait till I see them in person cause I can probably only afford to get one right now so I’ll pick whichever one speaks to me most there :)

@MustBeJewel Thank you for your kind response! What I'm hearing is that unless a truck full of celestial ponies gets derailed, we will be good? But in all seriousness, I appreciate you taking the time to make sure I am informed! I think worrying about the after market can lead to less desirable financial decisions, at least for me and my wallet. Now I feel much more confident about the celestial ponies :happyhearts:

Accidental double post. X(

Me Grurk know you wanting new mammoth hide for long time. What you gimme for it?

Me give you 20 spear heads!

20? Gentleman in next cave offer me 40 for hide. It gonna be mighty cold winter. Wife Groober froze solid already.

Me Drungus offer you 50 spearheads!

And that ladies and gents is how scalping came to be. Way to go Grurk, you price gouging jerk! You've ruined it for all of us!
