Collecting Habits

Heh, I am totally into accessories right now - and I NEVER cared before at all... I think it's because compared to the ponies I still need to finish my collection, accessories are relatively cheap. However, I get EASILY distracted by Dream Beauties, which are my overall main focus to get them all... and then I spend all my money on one dream beauty and i'm broke again. :D

not that it's surprising as it took me over a year to even admit I have a "collection" = I just like making a rainbow in my office (now looks more like a pony room... hmm says something about priorities of late... but really = these nirvana buys are like "goals" for me work-wise, so it's all good = right? )

Another excuse I have is making international families = like getting a brazil, and spanish, and US and custom sugarberries together, or AJ's from about everywhere (peru, mexico, argentina, UK, italy etc. etc.) and don't even get me started about trying for all the Minty varieties = especially when I read some italians go for upwards of $500 (??) ok, I thought I was overspending to get a trio of greeks! yikes...

so yeah, the whole herd started when I was wandering down the toy aisle in 2006 pregnant and with a 2 year old and saw = whoo hoo = My littlle ponies are back! And then it was off to ebay and craigslist and stumbling onto here for more G3's after they went downhilll with all that core 7 silliness... speaking of CL = it was a huge haul there that started my US G1 herd... and then MDmeet and finding the arena nirvana board later in 2010 = well, yeah, that about sums up how I dunno = I am now into the several hundreds counting the G1'a and G3's. Ok = I just came up with my 2012 goal = get organized and count 'em!

No G2's for me... and not really caring for the G4's save for customs = sorry but I like my pony toy to look like a pony (the G4's are cute! and love FiM, but just cannot get over the anime-d out look of the new stuff)

and I think what I love most is that I have no fear of any of my kids walking in and saying "wanna play ponies?" and we can opt to get some shelf girls down and have a grand galloping gala mixing 80's with the 21st century :) I'm just a big kid at heart and so glad I am not into hummel figures/breakable whatever and just love love love the added bonus that there is a way to take a moldy, broken, bitten, or otherwise considered piece of trash pony and give it a second life as a custom - which for me as a novice sculpter and doodle-r of all things equestrian since like forever is just a perfect fit for me :)

so yah, that's me and my "collection" goal = just gather up what I like and spend time with family doing what I like with them :) = playing ponies, drawing ponies, making customs

I tend to fluctuate between things. One moment im into breyers, the next magic meadow ponies and then back to ponies. It tends to vary inbetween those three things for me. I guess the thing for me is not being able to find what i want for a decent price so ill get burnt out on that particular thing so ill see what else there is thats affordable.

If it weren't for Twilight I would not watch the show; save Luna I'm really not all that interested in the other characters.
Kinda interesting to hear which characters are favorites and why. A lot of fans seem to like Fluttershy because they relate to her; others seem to like Rarity and AJ for their kindness. What surprised me most was that I can't really think of any characters I don't like to some degree. (My Lunas are still packaged up though--until my styling skills are worthy of her highness!)

not really caring for the G4's save for customs = sorry but I like my pony toy to look like a pony (the G4's are cute! and love FiM, but just cannot get over the anime-d out look of the new stuff)
Even as someone who got into all this because of FiM, I totally get you there. It's probably why I started venturing into previous gens. With G4 it's more the characters' personalities that draw me to the toys, while with earlier gens it's all appearance. I know, I'm so shallow.

I love ponies! But I am greatly limiting my collection for the following reasons:

1. I don't work full time and have a limited income,
2. I'm saving up to buy my first home (I don't want to rent (I see that as "borrowing" someone else's house), I want it to belong to me)

So I've put the following rules on my collection (though they're very loose):

1. Aim for ponies that relate to me in some way (this could be personality, favourite colours or foods, or they remind me of someone I know) although I do own a few who are exceptions...
2. If there's no room for it on a shelf, it can't come home. My ponies will never live in boxes!
3. If I really really want more, I need to sell old clothes or toys!

(OT: Saving up for my home is going to be hard! But I am determined to do it!) :coolsnow:

Maycrestmom - :eek:k: I am completely with you on that.

As for my habits... I'm all inclusive to anything/everything G1 and all G3 ponies/accessories (not G3.5) From as far back as I can remember I've been a pack rat. I love to collect things and throughout the years have had everything from rubber stamps, carousel horses and ducks. However, My Little Pony has definitely been the mainstay with me. I have to be careful as my love of collecting things could turn into a serious hoarding problem. I keep it in check with just the aforementioned pony lines but I can't help trying to complete sets (including all accessories down to back cards and ribbons for the G1s). I'll sometimes find myself focusing more on one area than another, but will always hunt for anything on my list. It's a game to me to see if I can find what I'm after for a reasonable price (or a great trade).

Right now I guess I'm looking for G3 accessories that I can trade G3 ponies for since the thrift stores have provided me with an over abundance of duplicates!

I get distracted far to quickly! I suppose I'm always looking out for a good priced mib g1 as that's the side to my collection I want to expand the most, but then I'm a sucker of merchandise and ribbons! G4 seem to happen if I see them in the shops (telco sound have the traveling ones soon) and then I'm totally obsessed with monster high dolls ATM too!

My budget is no were near it's old levels, so I have to hold back tons nowear days, and I've seen some great stuff too! Grrr! But not long till I finish uni and can get back to normal lol

I was toying with the idea of more g3, but they just are sitting there not doing much (even though now I have a wish list) I don't feel like activly getting them above g1 since I have so few I'd like to get right now.

I've also expanded on to babies.... Which I didn't think would happen, after I've picked up a few bits I want I'd like to get a bit more active getting them! Never thought that would happen, but as there's less and less on my wish list, I seem to just add more!

I've even started on some more pricey nivarnas, which I never thought would happen!

So i suppose all that means - my habit is dictated by, buy what I like! Lol

If I get hooked on a set, I start out strong, then fizzle out when it's near complete. heh.

It's been fun reading this thread & seeing how everyone collects.

I fall into the group, "OMG! I just found these again & I need them ALLLL! NOWWWWWW!", which is quite ridiculous. I cannot own every single G1 pony after so long of not collecting (@ least not for years & years & years...ha!), but alas..I'm trying. I find myself stalking the boards or CL for new sale threads & slowly piecing together what I call, "Pony funds" to make the buying a fit into my tiny pony budget.

I'm lucky in that my husband enjoys the ponies & encourages it, but that can also be a drawback too...too many too fast & I'll probably burn myself out. Or will I? :catani:

My main focus right now is hoarding as many pennies as I can to get to Pony Fair this year. After seeing all of the threads...GAH! It's Heaven! I must attend, but overall...I see a pony I want, for a crazy price, & said pony comes to my lil home :)

I have no habits. I just buy ponies. If I see a deal, and want it and have the money....then it's mine. I try to work off my wishlist, but sometimes I don't. I am always add and crossing off my wishlist. I'm not organized at all. lol

I have been forcing myself to ONLY buy single ponies and any sets that have Luna in them so that I can save space. I shift from being TOTALLY into MLP to being totally into Bella Sara, then totally into fairies, etc.... It just depends. And about what provokes me to buy something: IF IT IS MLP I BUY IT! Heh heh.

I use to have a huge G1 collection and sold it. Got to missing those and started buying again. LOL so stupid I know but G3 ponies got my G1 bug back in full force. I don't buy ponies because of any show or personality. For me, I purchase them only because of the works of art they are, colors and beauty.
G4 ponies really do not look like ponies and they do not look like the characters they represent on FIM. I love FIM but don't care for the line. The blind bags are much closer to resembling the ponies and I do like those..but don't collect anything G4. I was disappointed with this line mainly because of coloring problems. The heads rarely match the bodies and the hair quality is below standards on previous lines. The accessories don't make a lot of sense to me either and the clothing is worse than I could ever imagine compared to qualities seen in G1. G3 clothing drives me crazy because its molded vinyl for the most part..uggggggg. I love G3 though. I usually pick ponies that just speak to me. I don't have any type of plan with my collecting. Just go for what I like. I currently do not purchase any G3 pony as I have all the ones I want really except for a few babies. I really only buy G1 for the most part. Out of the G1's I really don't care for the peek a boo ponies as I feel the hair is just below standard and some of the bodies are a little awkward looking. I really have to like color, hair, cutie mark/symbol and expressions when it comes to ponies..as well as the original sculpt.
