Do you open your MIPs?

I got a MOC G1 in the mail the other day and I ALMOST opened her - I realized what I was doing SECONDS before disaster struck, lol!

I don't decard/debox/open my MOCs, unless they're G3's or something, but G1's and G2's never (well, unless it's a variant on a card that is deteriorating and damaging the pony itself!)!

So, do you guys? Like, if you went and dropped a ton of money on a MIP/MOC/MIB pony, would you open it just to have the mint pony, or would you keep her in her packaging?

I'm like you, unless the box/card damages the pony or is so broken that it just doesn't look good to display, I won't open them.
There are tons of loose ones out there, so why open a MOC one where nobody can be sure about how many are left of them?
Of course it's nice to have a absoutely mint one and it's funny that some mint ponies nearly cost the same as if they were MOC, but still.. It's not worth to open them in my opinion.

But I'm different with MIPs and those I would open.
I mean you can't touch or brush them, you can't display them properly and there is no artwork or anything on the package. To me it is just plain, normal plastic, nothing special about it.
It wouldn't make a difference to me if somebody took a mint pony, put it in a plastic bag and put tape on it ^^.
I bought a MIP Baby Stockings yesterday and I will open her and put her on my little christmas tree ;).
I know she's a common one but I think I couldn't even leave a Rapunzel in her package :D.
But in the end everyone can do what they want with their ponies, as long as it makes one happy!

I don't decard or debox anything. I just can't bring myself to do it. The only reason I could think to do so if the card or the box could cause the pony damage. Like if the box had some mold growing on it or something.

I only have one G1 MOC currently, of my fav pony. And I plan to keep her that way. But I also have 1 loose mint version that I can handle. I have the same process for my favorite G3s... one MIB and 1 loose.

I leave them in their packaging. It's so easy to find a loose version if you want a loose version.
Oh except the art ponies... I have taken them out to mess around with them but I store them in their boxes =)

I have a Tunefull whose bubble is half detached but it's in just the right spot that I can still hang her wtih her falling out. I do take her out and pet her every now and then, but I can't make that final leap of actually ripping the bubble off the card and having her loose @_@

I'm a free the pony collector, always. I respect that some people like to leave ponies on the card, but they're ponies, they're toys, I will always free a pony if I have the opportunity. G3s, G1s, G2s, GPurples, I'll free them all.

That being said, in most scenarios I wouldn't buy a MOC because I know I'd free them. But it has happened before, and it could happen in the future. Let me just say there's no greater high than tearing a G1 off a card, it's like tasting the forbidden fruit.

People don't seem to take into consideration that there is proof that ponies on cards are damaged by said cards. I can't say for certain if this is true with American ponies but I have an argie baby who was MOC that I freed and she has marks on the side she was touching the card, from being on the card. As far as argies go, and perhaps down the line other nationalities, being on the cards destroys them.

FREE THE PONIES!

MOC/MIP doesn't do anything for me -- I will gleefully rip any and all ponies from boxes. I just don't consider a pony in my collection unless it's out of the box and I've brushed it and washed it, and loved it. Of course, I don't buy G1s and G2s with that in mind. If I ended up with a G1 MOC, I'd probably sell it so I could get other ponies I liked...loose! :declare:

I wouldn't open a MOC/MIP pony, there are so few of them left and to find one is such a prize! As much as I would LOVE to smell that New Pony Smell again, I just could never bring myself to open a MOC.

Ususally, I would just agree with BittieBaby- there are so few left, they should just be kept MOC for posterity; HOWEVER, I think its up to the collector to decide whether or not to open the pony.

If someone drops $100+ on a MOC/MIP/MIB pony, its their choice whether or not to keep it that way for their collection.

I don't think the whole "if you want it loose, buy it loose" always applies. Part of freeing a carded pony IS opening it for that fresh-off-the-card smell. The feeling of having a brand-new pony in your hands... knowing YOUR hands are the first to touch her, or to brush her hair... Thats a good feeling, and if I spend X amount of dollars for a carded pony, its MY choice whether or not to de-card her.

I've only decarded one pony- a Greek Starshine. I took pictures documenting each step of opening it, and I enjoyed every second of it. You can imagine the controversy the pics caused when I posted them, but, surprisingly, there were a lot of people that agreed with me, lol. :)

I have a MOC Sunbeam that I've been dying to open, but haven't been able to do it... I do, though, stick my nose up to the space in the bubble beneath her hooves and sniff really hard to get a whiff of the New Pony Smell :).

Not unless it's a G3, and a regular store-issue one at that! I only own two MOC G1s, one with a very good condition card and one that's kinda been through the wars, but I won't de-card either one. I don't have any MOC G2s, but if I did I wouldn't de-card those either. I won't open Mail Order or special G3s, and I've been known to keep MIB some store-issue G3s that seem to be relatively HTF.

I'm okay with the idea of opening a MOC G1 pony if it's in such poor condition that the packaging would end up damaging the pony inside, but only then. There are so few MOCs left out there that if someone got one and wanted a loose one instead, they could easily trade! As for MIPs in the little baggies, I'm not sure what the reasoning would be to open those up since the plastic bag isn't going to hurt anything...

I'm in the same camp with you. Ponies need hands on them. That's why I don't buy MOC. It makes me sad for some reason to see them all quarantined.

The MOC are special in their own way so I respect the collectors who like them. But even if I destroy some of its retail value by breaking that seal, there is another value that is transferred to me personally. That's what I pay for.

I am almost there with you.....I am into MLP again because of my daughter....and she is only 4 now....sooooo, it's hard to keep Ponies sealed.....with her starring at them through plastic......BUT I have been told to resist!!!!!:) So.....I will listen. (when it comes to G1s)

I opened my Kellogg's Christmas Baby and the Chuck E. Cheese Baby several years back. It wasn't a big deal to me at the time. If I received them MIP now, though, I would probably keep them in their packages or trade them for mint loose ones.

I'm not a MIP/MOC collector. I don't have the room. If I had the desire to purchase MIPs, though... Now... I'd keep them that way.

I did force myself to "open" my MOC Greek Skydancer recently. Only because her bubble was badly damaged in our last move, so she was pretty much hanging out of the package.

ON CARD (at least for G1s)! I agree that it's often easy to find a loose version. Oh, and Bittie, you can totally get that new pony smell by storing some ponies in a plastic bag or tub for several weeks or months and then opening it. I have a couple of perfume puffs I store that way. I LOVE that smell. It takes me back to my childhood every time!
