Do you say Symbol or Cutiemark?

I grew up with G3, so I always thought of them as cutie marks. I was introduced to the term symbol after joining the collecting community. I tend to use cutie mark and symbol interchangeably for G3 and G4, but I usually use just symbol for G1 and G2.

I'm in the "both" category. Being that I grew up with G1 I called them symbols, now I use Cutie Mark. I tend to use Cutie Mark more for the G3's and 4's cause that's what they call them...it just depends on my mood lol

Personally, I think it depends on who I'm talking to. If I'm talking to somebody who isn't really into ponies, I say symbol to avoid the possible confusion of what a cutie mark is. Even though I say cutie mark more often, I'd rather call it a symbol with a non-fan because I think the former would sound really cutesy, lol.

ALSO, I sometimes refer to them as symbols when talking about G1 or G2 ponies, just because it makes more sense to me, considering that's what they were called then. I almost always call them cutie marks when I'm talking about G3, G3.5 and G4.

In the end, I usually call it a cutie mark, but again, it depends on the situation.

Generally I say symbol but I'm pretty sure that when I was little I used to call it a rump mark (I possibly got it from the G1 comic?).

I use the term that applies to the generation I'm discussing.
To be honest I prefer ponies without symbols... I think psychologically I feel symbols restrain or confine the boundaries of potential in creativity and design x.x

So I've noticed I tend to only do them when requested ^-^;

I agree. This is why most of my pony characters have decorative symbols, rather than ones that relate to them.

I started with Gen 4, so in general I say 'cutie mark' but when referring to gen 1 I usually say 'symbol'.

That's exactly how I am! G1s and G2s have symbols, and the rest have cutiemarks!

I would see all sorts of names for it on ebay back around early-mid G3. I think a term I saw several times was..... rump mark, or something like that. What ever it was, when I was 8-ish I had to ask what it meant (rump or flank or whatever it was). I can just imagine a macho stallion not wanting a 'cutie' mark referred to in such a way.

Edit: I seem to be on the same wavelength with @ariaelwen

I use both actually as I like both.

I use cutie mark because I am a G3 G4 girl, even though i love G1's i just got introduced to them, so i say it out of habit.

Symbol most of the time, for G1s/G2s/G3s and OCs/ponysonas. For G4s I'll use either one but usually cutie mark.

I use both. I've always said symbol and since the G3 times they were using Cutie Mark. I grew up with the G1's but I'll say Cutie Mark for fans who only know G4 since it's what they know if they've never seen anything before G4.
