Hello everyone! I noticed today that my G2 Tipsy Tulip has some green markings on parts of her legs, I have 2 more G2s but they don’t have this problem. I don’t remember if she had it before or not since she’s second hand and i don’t have a lot of experience and i haven’t seen a lot of stuff of G2 ponies. I think maybe it’s regrind (since that happens on G1s). Does anyone know what it is?

whatever it is it's not regrind. regrind occurs as round spots, usually various pink or orange. it's probably dirt built up inside or rust. i'm not well-versed in g2s, so i'm not positive what the magic motion mechanisms are like, but if it's partially made of metal (or it may just be the tail washer rusting) pieces of said rust can flake off and accumulate in crevices like this.

Thank you so much! That makes a lot of sense, i didn’t think it could be something like that. I wish there was more info about restoring G2s and fixing some of their mechanisms (like the Magic Motion ponies) I think they’re really interesting

Tipsy Tulip doesn't have any Magic Motion features, though. Also G2s are much harder plastic than G1s; imo even if a pony were rusty on the inside it wouldn't "show through" the plastic like it can on G1s.

I'm not sure what to make of the discoloration. I would just keep an eye on it and see if it spreads or gets any darker! Since she's secondhand maybe it's marker that you didn't notice before?

She does, she has a mechanism when you turn the tail the head moves (it’s looks really weird tho). I will see if it gets any worse or spreads, i tried to rub it with a magic sponge but it doesn’t really look or feel like a stain.

Oh yes, the Exorcist pony. You can make their head go all the way around, when the effect on the box/backyard is usually more described as shaking out their mane by twisting the knob back-and-forth. XD

That’s one of the problems with G2s, they’re sought after but not a lot seems to be known about restoring them. I wonder if it’s because few people are willing to dissect them to figure out their inner workings in case it ruins them. They also don’t age well I’ve noticed. Not all of them obviously, but they do seem to be prone to getting sticky especially ones with odd finishes like Hip Holly, but also random ones like my Apple Pie. She was the first of my G2’s to get sticky.

Wait G2s can get sticky? I once saw a thread about a G3 Pinkie Pie getting sticky, i didn’t know G2s could too. Do you know more about them?

Scroll down to plasticizer leakage. That’s what happens. I do see it more in G3s and I think it has something to do with the shiny coating a lot of them seem to be made with. Which is less of a coating, and more of the entire ingredient because you see it on the inside as well. But it can happen to a lot of toys not just ponies, and pretty much all generations of MLP. Conditions you keep them in might play a factor, but I can’t tell you for sure.

I’ve noticed G2s turning that way on card as well, and again not just Hip Holly who is notorious for it.

before i commented on this thread i tried to find some photos of the internal mechanism involved here, there was one thread here on the tp from 2013 where a user had taken a magic motion sundance and ivy apart to show the inside but the images have unfortunately reverted to photobucket logo thumbnails :(

The translucent one, Hip Holly is prone to stickiness. I don't know if non-translucent ones are, though. Usually squishier plastic is more prone to it, because the plasticizer is what makes vinyl and such elastic. But I don't think most G2s are made of vinyl. They aren't squishy.

Edit: Thinking of all the different gens, G2 plastic is most similar to the G5 3" poseable ponies and very specifically the G1 ballerina ponies, which had harder plastic bodies so kids couldn't tear off their poseable legs.

So in my collection specifically my Apple Pie was the first one to get sticky, and I opened a Lady Satin Slipper (A.k.a. not the one with the built on ballerina outfit but still comes with ballerina accessories) who was getting sticky under the plastic of the box. I do not have Hip Holly but like we said she’s the notorious one.

Aw man, that is a bummer. (And good to know . . . I was really hoping it would "skip" that generation. Dang . . . ) It's so frustrating when a pony develops a problem and there's literally nothing you can do about it. :( Especially mint on card. Nooooo, you are supposed to stay pristine . . .
