Believe it or not, G3 is still in production of sorts!
I know it's not that big of a shock, considering they stopped being made only a few years ago, but the G3/G3.5 ponies haven't been forgotten by Hasbro.
They still sell blank ponies on their website, which means they still technically make them:

They call them the "standard size" ponies, which means they only consider FiM to be a separate branch of pony.
They might not make the older ponies anymore, but they've kept the characters around for some reason.
They've even re-posted some of the old G3 games on their MLP site, which they call the "classic" games.
I've seen birthday cards with Starcatcher and Twinkle Bloom on them that are still being sold in stores!
They also continue to sell G3/G3.5 stickers at stores like Walmart.
Also, it's not very hard to find G3 books at Barnes & Noble, I've seen them there a few times.
They mostly still produce the Core 7 books, but I've seen the older ones as well.
Extra factory leftovers or what, I'm glad that G3 is still around, even if only subtly
