G4? Say no people!

Well when it comes down to it, I really don't care what anyone calls them.

But, i'm going to have to agree with Emberly, Beth, and Minty on this one. If Hasbro has stopped production of regular g3s and continues to only make these monstrosities, then they are indeed G4s. It's not like they are running alongside regular G3s such as dream beauties or sweetheart sisters. It seems as though they are replacing regular G3s as the main pony style. And their features and styling are totally and completely different than anything hasbro has produced in the past (well except for LPS, but that's another story) and the logo, packaging design, and artwork have been completely revamped, so I shudder with the thought, but resign myself to admitting that it seems as though g3s are a thing of the past and these little alien/duck/deamons are truly the MLP of the future...

If we have to agree on a technical term on what to call them, I think "Evil Mutant Zombies", or EMZs would be the most apt term.

I think GibsonGirl summed it up better than I could.
I will call them G4's and like Ringo said... you all will know what I'm talking about if I say G4.

Now if a few years go by and they release new ponies yet again, the debate may rage on whether those noobs are G4 or G5 is up to the future. But from now till that happens, they're G4 to me.

I like the term G4 because it signifies a big change from the older style of G3s. :] I'm with Emberly and the others; I think it's a big enough change to need a name-change, as well.

I actually called the 2008 coat-hanger ponies G4 until the 2009 aliens came. But I knew I was the only one. I didn't honestly expect everybody to start calling them G4. I secretly had hopes that Hasbro would bring G3 back. I mean, regulator G3 has in 2003-2007 G3, with hearts on their hooves.

*sigh* Those hopes are all gone for me now. Just as with generations gone past, all that remains is a dream.
:ipmimscs:

also... the new bobbleheads are not running alongside the old G3's... they are gone. Their production has ended. Do a few years really have to go by before the new releases are the next generation? You said there was no end of production... but there was. The old G3's are not coming out anymore. No more divas, no more duck donkeys, no more broken necks... They're absolutely done (*cries*)

So as long as none of those old ponies are being produced WHILE the bobbleheads are being spit out into toy stores across the world, the noobs are a new generation imo.

If these things were like "pony cousins" or something, like the sisters and the big brothers then fine. but they're simply not.

Like I said this is purely opinion. What one person calls the ponies hardly affects our community as a whole, I am sure that you can figure it out, and I don't believe this warrents yet another post.

That word "Nirv...." (I still refuse to say it) was started by ONE person and a bunch of people in the community use this word now. I'd rather see a stop to that word than this whole G3-G4 issue.

As for that issue anyway.....you guys know my opinion on it and I think Whippet made her points more clear than I did. I know Emberly has her points but in the last thread that I made a post I pointed out that I was talking about US production and I already knew that the timelines in production for other countries was different than ours.

I'm just choosing to ignore them completely and focusing on my new g2 obsession... **** those skinny little things. hehe Personally, if asked I'd prolly go with G3 because it's the same ponies (names, colors, liknesses, personalities). When they reintroduce Pinkie Pie and she's blue with sailboats instead of ballons then I may break out the G4 verbage.

off topic, but what is a coat hanger pony?:p
to me it seems like hasbro wanted to make a new gen but didnt want to spend the time and money designing both new molds and at the top of that new pony symbols and names:p so they did the molds and left us with that.

2008 ponies with coat hangers on their hooves. A lot of people used to call them core seven, but there are many who were not part of the core seven line. 2008 Minty (Winter), for example.

When I saw the post I thought we were all going to patition Hasbro against the new 'G4, G3.5, EMZ, ugly g3' ponies....

I dont think it matters much what there called, either you like it or you dont lol

Yes.... they... were? Do yo not see the logo or know the story behind them? Pretty pony was the first. THE first. Dream Beauties were running for a while actually. There's more of them then there are boy ponies. And they're SUH hard to find. I want my Spritzy.

Whippet is right hands down.

Sorry Techno, I meant that the Prety pony was sold as My Pretty Pony and Dream Beauties were a supplemental line running alongside the regular line, not technicially my little ponies in the sense that they did not come in the line as the sole molds of MLP but were instead 'grown up' verisons that didn't affect the story or what have you of G1s

Like I said I don't claim to know solely about what it should be called or how the line will turn out, I agree that there are refutable points in both arguements. I am just stating my opinion, as you have done as well, Whippet.

The characters is a weird thing. I agree that they have never done anything like that before (obviously) and that it interlinks the two, in my opinion, seperate generations like have never been done before. However my personal opinion is that the overhaul of the aesthetic and the change in packaging, line, art desgins, marketing and even story of the said ponies makes it a big enough gap for me.

I just don't think they're a subset, I would definitely term this as a new generation of ponies. Also, we're entering 2010. The line has run almost as long as G1, which G2 didn't, it almost is a new generation for a new generation, so to speak.

Anyhow, td;lr= the ponies look completely different, and aren't running alongside of the orginial mold-types or anything that looks like them. We should wait and see how the line itself pans out and let whoever wants to call them whatever do so.

I will not be calling them G4. Just because people say they are completely different doesn't change my mind. Yes, they are drastically different.. but the same marketing, the same characters... Hrm?

If you go by that ground then the movie Firefly would be g2? She was released before... and then again.. AND she looked drastically different.

It's NOT G4 people. It's still G3, still Core 7. Seriously just call them ugly it sums it all up. >.>

UUUMMM I'm with Whippet. These are still G3s. Same characters same story line. They just have different molds. Different molds does not always mean that it is a new generation. IMO I think it is a characters and story line change thing. These are the same ponies.

G4? No...it's the same generation people. There was no end of production, it's just a design change. Just as the sister ponies and dream beautys are not a different generation. We really should not call them G4 unless we go back and change the generation for every major design change.

G1... big plastic Pretty pony
G2... collectors pose
G3...normal ponies
G4 flutters?
G5 Sister ponies
G6 Dream Beauties?

No...we can't go that way. It's G3 until they stop production for a while then start up the line again. So please...for the love of pete...call them G3 chibis or something.

This is just my own very opinionated opinion...feel free to ignore me.

I love you!

This has started to become a pet peeve of mine as well. It's just like when the G1's came out with sweetheart sister pose and other different sizes. They are still G1's until the production came to an end. Then there was like a few months to a few years between the end of the G1 and beginning of the G2 line. Then G2's ended and it was again many months to a few years before the G3's appeared. These are still the G3 line, just character redesigns. 00) It's unknown if there will ever be a G4 or more. We don't know what the future will hold. It's a guessing game. But by collecting standards, this is the norm that a line has to completely end before a new generation can begin.

As for the Nirvana thing, it's kinda like ponyland slang for rare/international ponies. Look at it that way. :)

I know a lot of people are content with this word (especially newer collectors, since that's the word they were introduced to) but I know others and I hate it. Even the original person who used the word hates it now lol
Ah well, whatever works for the individual

*ETA: I also wanted to apologize for throwing this thread off topic so I'll stop with my mini-rant :)

G3. Period.

Doesn't matter what we call them though, as I won't buy them. Good move Hasbro - now I can buy all your older products you make no money off of anymore. Compared to the original ponies, G3 as a whole has been lame. Come on, their biggest problem in life is what flavor of cake to serve at their next party. G1 ponies had some ISSUES.

well i'd like to point out that while the different mold arguement is valid and i agree, you need to also realize that with the SHS they didn't redo the entire branding of the product. with these new ones, they redid te entire branding-new logoes, new packaging, and yes, new molds all around.

yes it's still the same core 7, and the same storyline. so unless we call them G3 2.0, G4 is just alot easier to differentiate.

we need a new label for them is what say. so please don't chase me with pitch forks now ^^;

I think we just need to stop having these threads. There have been probably at least a good 20 threads arguing if these are G3 or G4.

I hate the usage of G4, and I stated my reasons, but really, everyone knows what everyone else is talking about, whether they use G4 or new G3's or the new ugly ones or the fat bobble-head looking ones...etc. Look. I just listed 4 things I've seen them called. Chibis, aliens... there's 2 more xD

I really think we need to just stop arguing it. Each of these threads goes the same way, for such and such pages. Then, it gets lost on page 2 or 3, and lo and behold! There's a new one started. People will call them what they want - there's not gonna be a consensus [spelling?] on it, so let's just stop arguing it guys.

*loves for all*

I think this was started because I made a post that was called "TAF G4s?"
I only called it that because I figured everyone would know what I meant.
meh.
