I'm fairly new to collecting. Though I pride myself on being an extremely fast learner, and I've figured a lot of things out for myself, I'm still not entirely savvy on the terminology. I know that a "Nirvana" is a pony variant that was made exclusively in a different country, and I know what things like "regrind", "pony cancer" and "smooze" are.

I'd like to know, what exactly is a "holy grail" pony? I know that it's different for everyone and that it's effectively the one pony that you want more than anything else, but what exactly constitutes a "grail" pony? Does it have to be particularly rare or expensive? Does it have to be out of print? G1-G3 only? What things do you take into consideration when deciding a pony is your grail?

I'm asking because I don't really know what my grail pony would be... I have long wishlists for every gen, but I don't know which of each I could think of as the holy grail of the lot. I can think of quite a few ponies that I'd love to own, and a few that I'm desperate for, but I'm not sure if they could be considered grails...

And on the same topic, what are your personal holy grail ponies? Do you have them yet, or are you still looking? :winkpony:

A grail doesn't really have anything to do with price or how rare it is. It's basicly the one pony (or ponies) that you feel you absolutely must have, you want nothing more, you will not rest untill you have it! - The pony of your pony-dreams  Or something along those lines...

As you said yourself, everyone has their own grail and it can be anything from a flawless Peachy to a beat up Ladybug. Whatever floats your boat ;) And when you get your hands on one grail there's nothing wrong with getting another grail. I know that happends to me and I'm sure that happends to others too :p

I've personaly gotten some of my grails but I still have a few. My grails at the moment would be Brazil Truly, MIB Princess Serena and Alternate Birthflower October :)

I think Desert_Rose has summed it up perfectly.Only thing I can add is you don't need to have a Holy Grail either to be a collector. ;) But if you want to consider those particular ponies you are desperate for as Holy Grails it's completely up to you.

Personally, I lacked a Holy Grail for a years. I would say, if I had been thinking about it, the RD Promo card & Sandiego Comic Con funko chase ponies were my grails (this was before I knew they'd be so easy to get lol). Nowadays, I'd say the 2012 Sandiego Comic Con Muffin Pony & 2013 DJ Pon-3 are my grails. :)

For me my Grail Pony wouldn't be any specific type of Pony but rather one Particular Pony that alas, I will never see again.

Years ago my brother Ken bought me a Minty for graduation. It was 1984. I had other Ponies, but I adored my brother so, knowing this huge Marine went into the toy store while on leave and bought a girl's toy for me, then had it in the bunkhouse with him (he said he got a lot of ribbing from his fellow Marines) just made her all the more special. I would carry her in my purse or crammed in a pocket with me. She went to college with me, got married with me. She was on the bedside table when I had my son. When my husband died I carried her with me everywhere as comfort. Minty literally was my best friend and confidant.

Then I moved, and she was carefully packed into one of those huge tubs with about 200 others. Why I didn't just keep her with me I don't know, but I was afraid in the rush to move I would lose her. Worse though... someone stole the tub off my porch as we went back and forth to the moving van with the boxes. Minty was lost forever.

I still get teary thinking about my Minty. I could get another, but she wouldn't be the same grand dame. And sadder yet, Kenneth is gone as well. Weirdly enough, today is the actual anniversary of his dying, on my birthday. I like to think he has Minty with him, waiting for me. I know that sounds rather mad, but she had a life of her own and I still miss her.

I can't ever replace that, so that's why Minty is my Grail.

Man, what a depressing post. Sorry!

AW evilbunnyfoofoo...Pony hugs for you! :'(

I had a toy that meant the world to me, it was not given to me by someone special but it was with me through my entire short life until I lost it when I was 18 in Florida's Universal Studios. I fully believe he's in heaven waiting for me along with my beloved Godfather & Grandfather. X) I like to think sometimes we give our beloved toys life just by loving them, so I don't think that's mad at all. :) And if it is, I don't want to be sane!

evilbunnyfoofoo, you just got me crying. That was an emotional story from the beginning. :1985:

I don't have anything else to add. Desert_Rose explained it quite well. My grail pony is Blueberry Baskets. I just love the colour of her~

Aww FooFoo that is the most heartbreaking story! He is absolutely waiting for you with your Minty, I have no doubt!

My grail ponies are Nightglider and TAF Buttons. I just cannot get my hands on these girls for a decent price and it drives me bananas.

oh foofoo, I'm so sorry and you made me cry! I don't think you're silly for thinking they are waiting for you, I think it's precious and I'm positive that they would be :)

With grail ponies, I've somehow managed the impossible and got many of my grails! my grails that I own are: Greek icy blue haired Bluebelle (AFTER HER FOR YEARS NOW!), TAF Buttons, TAF Nightglider, TE Mimic (HOW DID THIS HAPPEN??), Argentina Truly, Argentina bride/truly, prototype lyra heartstrings/sunny rays, and Baby Leafy the calf (Who I LOVE and looks like me so so much!) and many more!

There are many that I dont have, like brazil collectors pose parasol (SO BEAUTIFUL) and many others, and also many ponies I love that I'm still after to get, like TAF Dancing Butterflies and a Rainbow Tickle! Also, I adore piggy ponies! They are just too fascinating! And too cute!

There's also other pony toys like fakies that I lost as a child that I'm trying to find, they meant a lot to me, I'm just glad I still have my beloved TE Whizzer who to me is worth more than any other pony!

It's always lots of fun to have that one pony that means a lot to you and to get them if possible!

:cry2: FooFoo, I'm so sorry for your loss... I know exactly how you feel.

I form emotional attachments to objects because of the memories they trigger for me. That's why I can never get rid of things – even when I no longer need, want, or have any place to put them... Parting with a sentimental item feels like losing a friend or euthanising a pet – and I know the feeling of both those things well enough to know that the comparison is accurate.

I had quite a few ponies when I was little. The first one I ever had was Swirly Whirly. I had her longer than I could remember, and she never lost her vanilla scent. I remember I got Baby Flicker on holiday in Knysna, and I played with her in the house we rented there. I remember getting Talks A Lot when I was maybe around 10 years old... it's funny, but I can still remember playing with her in the car on the way home, sitting and looking out the window at the rain with her in my hands while parked outside my grandmother's house... I had others that I can't remember getting and wasn't that attached to, but when I see pictures of them I get nostalgic. The ponies that I loved more than anything else were my Bridal Beauty and Baby Berrytown, who also became my own personal mommy-and-baby pair. I especially loved putting the veil and ring on Bridal Beauty and having play weddings with the other ponies in attendance.

I also remember the last night I saw my childhood best friend before she emigrated to Scotland, when she left me her entire collection and told me to take care of them for her. I was bequeathed at least 7 ponies, amongst them a Tickle, Bowtie, Sweet Stuff and Baby Glory. They were all I had left of her, especially when we lost contact after a few months.

In my tweens, I discovered G2s, and at first I was extremely offended by them. They didn't even look like ponies to me. But I decided to give them a fair chance, and eventually I'd taken about a dozen of them home with me. They didn't get played with nearly as much as my old ponies did, because at that age I'd begun to outgrow playing with toys and shifted towards games. But I had them neatly lined up on my desk in my bedroom, and I'd stare at them before going to sleep at night. They were the first thing I saw when I came home from the hospital after having my appendix out, and they instantly made me smile.

Then only a few months later, my father decided to have an affair and disappear from my life. By the end of the year my parents had divorced, and we could no longer afford to stay at the house I grew up in. The movers came and began packing everything that we owned into boxes. I didn't care what happened to a lot of my stuff, except for my ponies. I'd intended to pack them in with my other belongings to come with me to my grandmother's flat, but in the confusion and drama of the move, they got thrown in with other old toys and taken off to the auctioneers. I later went there to look for them, but there was so much crap at that place, so many enormous piles of different people's junk waiting to be sold, that I never found them. I was devastated.

I'd love to be able to get any of these ponies back, but at the same time I'm not 100% certain that I truly want to... they'd be the same ponies, but they wouldn't be MY ponies. The ones that I'd loved and cherished, taken care of and experienced those memories with. I don't know if I could love a copy as much as I loved the pony that I lost. Thus I'm not certain I can consider any of them "grails", because as much as I'd like to have them again for posterity, I don't know if I'm that desperate, as I may just end up disappointed.

Oh, EVilbunny! So many (((((((hugs)))))))). What a touching story, and I love the mental image of your brother/Marine in the toy store buying a MLP. I love the self-confidence and love for his sister that belongs to that! Even if Minty is no longer with you, maybe she has delighted some little girl somewhere into whose hands she has fallen... I'm sure she brings her "energy" with her whereever she goes.

My "Grail" is always changing. One day it's as simple as Rainbowified mini Cadence or one of the BBE babies, the next as less-likley as Macau BRown Jenny (although she is currently on her way to me AT LAST!) Capricious, eh?. I call the ones that are somewhat achieve-able "grails" and the ones that are "in your DREAMS, woman" (like BRazilian Milky Way... white Italian Lemondrop...) "Holy Grails".

Oh man such sad stories to loose such childhood toys and people.

My grail pony is a princess silver swirl g2 I was not a huge fan of them but when I saw her for the 1st time I knew I must have one I keep losing her ever time I bid on ebay I am begging to think its a lost cause.

However my Best pony friend is sunlight for some reason I renamed him yes I made it a boy sun setter. I still have him but he show lots of Love rubs and a short tail. I thought boy horse should have short tail when I was younger lol.

I only have one grail at the moment, G1 Newborn Baby Twins Tootsie. I bought her twin at a garage sale years ago, and it makes me feel weirdly sad that Bootsie doesn't have her Tootsie twin.

I love all of the Newborn Baby ponies, though--they're so chubby and cute!

Oh Foofoo...:sadpony: What strength you have in your memories!

Here is to you! :bighug:

I found quite a few of my grails so far, my next one I am after is So Soft Wind Whistler in great condition and German Nightlight!!

Aww, evilbunnyfoofoo, big hugs to you. Such a sad but beautiful story!

I try not to go too nutty over searching for grails but it happens. ^^;; I just managed to get my hands on TAF Yum Yum (like buses, you wait for one and two turn up at once although they're both TLC cases) but am still hunting for TAF Munchy, Night Glider and Buttons. That second set is elusive! (Although I do have four Merriweathers... oops?) Previous grails were the entire Glow'n'Show set, which I've achieved although they're a slight bodge job, lol - a rehair or two and one cut forelock but I love them anyway. I still keep a hopeful eye out for Summer and Windy Wing ponies, as well as Baby Candy and Baby Lollipop. Oh and I really want a white Tootsie. :) Italian or the HK one, I'm not picky, she's just so lovely in white!

Ology, I was also hunting for Princess Silver Swirl but I just got her in a lot with some other G2s recently. I probably have an easier time of it though since Europe had more G2 releases I think. Best of luck finding her!

I think for the obvious reason I have uk baby sapphire as a Grail because she is one of those ponies that has my birthstone. Sometimes there are too many ponies to go after and not enough time to try to get them all. :/ My current grails are Flurry the windy wing, maybe Tux N tails, and baby pearly surprise. :)

What a great thread! Evilbunny your story is so sweet and sad. I wish you had never lost her. I'm too new at collecting to have a grail yet. I just got my first G1 twinkle eyed pony in the mail. That was pretty exciting because I have wanted one since I was a kid. Now I want all of them...hee hee!

Based on what others are saying, I guess my grail is, even though I still have my original one, G3 Bowtie. I got her for my birthday 11 years ago, and she is my most precious and dearly beloved pony. She is the one that started it all for me. Sure, her leg has broken and been glued back in place by my big bro, and she had a huge pizza stain on her and had to soak in the sink in soapy water for 3 days, and her hair is kind of frizzy, but I wouldn't trade her for anything. She has a life all her own, she is my most sentimental pony. I have a million memories of playing with her when I was a little girl, I styled her mane in braids, and pigtails, and other less flattering styles thought up by an 8 year old. She has been on so many adventures both in my imagination and along with me in real life.

On a different note, the grail pony I don't have may be cliché, but I gotta say Mimic.
Also, even though I have the 25th anniversary edition of her, my ultimate Holy Grail is the original G3 Star Catcher with the foily wings. *Squee* sooooooo pretty. :ponylove: A grail I got very recently is :Tex: my first (not counting Shining Armor) stallion.

There's about 800,000 ponies I want, but my grail ponies would definitely have to be G4 Star Swirl, Pumpkin Tart, Wishawhirl, Pretty Pop, Autumn Skye, Abra-ca-dabra & Rainbowberry. :ponylove:

My grail pony was the Argentina Christmas pony, Feliz Navidad. I wanted her SO bad!! Finally snagged one for Christmas several years ago, ain't she a beaut!

A grail is one that you really, really want. It could be the pony that just came out in stores, or it could be a vintage that's no longer being produced. For example, some of my grails are
the G1 Fizzy, G1 Whizzer and baby Rainfeather two are very common on ebay, but I'm just waiting for the right price. If there's two things Grails tend to do, it's top your must have lists and make you squeal when you find or have one in your hands.
. :)
