How do you collect?

I’ll be honest, I’ve kinda hit a wall in collecting. I’ve collected a few sets I adore in the last couple years but now I find myself feeling rather ‘meh’ about scouring the internet for ponies. Now the few I’ve found in thrift shops hold more value to me than the ones I’ve purchased.
I’m also torn on whether I should sell some of my ponies I’m less than ecstatic about. I mean, when I joined this forum originally, my goal was selling most of my collection. The very opposite ended up happening and I regret some of the ones I did sell back then (Happy Glow, Quakers, and Flowerbelle come to mind )

So how about you? Do you collect them all? Certain sets? Sentimental ponies only?

I buy only those ponies that I want (I don’t feel the need to complete sets just for the sake of it). Saying that, there’s not many I don’t want.

I also only get what I have room to display. I want to be able to see and enjoy my collection at all times, so that’s also an important factor for me.

I collect anything g1 and g2 including merchandise... g3 i have the "special" ones, g4 only fluttershy and so far no g5's have shown up. I do agree that a collection should be on display I do not see the point in keeping it if it lives in boxes all the time. i had nearly all the mib equestria girls but those have since gone up for sale, i used to collect g4 trixie, applejack, lyra and sunset shimmer but again they are for sale.. nearly all my g3 stuff went for sale. sometimes you have to really think about keeping everything in storage or being completely packed in a room.. and or if you even like them

It started with only the ponies I really wanted as a kid - I lied to myself it would be over when I get them all lol. Then I got a bunch of ponies from my university friend for free - most of them I initially didn't want. But then I fell in love with them... I would like to collect as many G3's as I can - to be honest, I don't think I can name a G3 pony which would be ugly to me. I'm a freak when it comes to 100% complete something. But I don't collect accessories, at least not the plastic ones - but some materials or dresses would be nice. And also no ponies in boxes, I would be so sad watching them stare at me from their seethrough prison

Well, as a student, it's quite simple for me. I'm poor and have a very small room haha. So I have to set my priorities as straight as a ruler. :winkpony: For now I collect everything Trickles related I can afford, the twice as fancy ponies, and flutterponies only.

I collected almost all the TE but Gumdrop, Masquerade and Gingerbread aren’t really doing it for me anymore. And at today’s prices I’ll never be able to justify the cost of Mimic or Quackers. For me, the Sparkle ponies and the Windy/Summer Wing ponies are where it’s at.

I tend to collect by my favorite ponies and themes. Blossom, Sugarberry and Fluttershy are my top favs, for example, and I collect everything to do with them! Ponies, merch, plush, anything I can find that features those ponies, goes on their respective shelves. They each have their own shelf/shelves, because I love organizing by type and theme.

And sometimes I just love a particular theme (beach theme, for instance), and I'll make a shelf dedicated to ponies with a beach or ocean theme and little accessories like tiny sandcastles and beach blankets and shells and other things that make the shelf look like a party at the beach. =D

For many years I used to collect *everything* pony, but soon ran out of space to display them all. Packing extras in storage bins didn't make sense to me (because why have them if I wasn't going to look at or enjoy them?), so little by little I would "thin the herd" by downsizing my collections every year or so, deciding which ponies were dearest to me and which I could send to new homes. Now, I collect only specific fav ponies and themes, and continue to sell/give away anything else. I'm very happy doing that. ^__^

Ooh! I’d love to see your themed shelves. It sounds adorable.

I only collect sets that I want and no real merch at all. My collection is small and grows slow due to finances(the joy to being single and having 3 living breathing and eating horses). I also apparently live in a state that finding them in the wild is almost a pure joke. BUT I have had some "wild finds" off MarketPlace and it has a few spares that I REALLY need to get put up for sale/trade since they are not sets that I particularly care for. Some will be off my radar for a while like the TAF babies because they are expensive!

I definitely aim to collect a lot of them.... I've found that a lot of the ones I want follow certain themes though, like glitter, moon and stars, holidays, or food themes. I collect My Little Pony today for probably much the same reason I've always collected it - it serves as a reminder to me of the good things in life. Oh positivity, of hope, of creativity and individuality, of the little joys in life that help keep me going. The ponies remind me of things I appreciate in life, which can be really important when things seem particularly bleak.

I collect all ponies from all generations. But, I don't actively search out ponies anymore. Now either I am delighted when my mom finds something in her thrifting adventures, or I pounce when a good deal comes by. I watch ebay, facebook, mecari and claim sales in the various groups. I casually browse all and maybe find a deal. Taking a five year hiatus in collecting really helped to respark my love for my collection.

Besides my own childhood ponies and all the Gusties, my favorite ponies to collect are the ones I have found over the years on trips to fairs, resale shops or flea markets. I like "rescuing" and restoring them, and each one is attached to memories of fun times I spent with my daughter and husband. G1 and G3 are still my favorites. The G4s grew on me and I had fun finding the weird ones on Taobao; I'm still adjusting to the newer ponies.

In past years I went wild collecting as many as I could, especially when they were right in front of my at a toy or pony convention. Since then I've curbed my impulses by limiting my collection only to baby ponies. They are just as cute and take up less space. I have a lot of standard size ponies packed away in crates that I intend to eventually sell, but it's hard to part with them.

These days I don't ever go hunting for ponies online, but I always keep an eye out for them at flea markets, thrift stores and yard sales. Most always to no avail. Like most of us, I haven't been to a convention or a pony fair in what feels like forever, so if I see any baby ponies there I know I am going to go nuts.

When I choose to collect I do tend to have them all. Then when my collection is completed, I sell the ones that are not dear to my heart. It what happened with the G1. I ended up selling my collection as I only wanted to keep my G2s. I have "hit a wall" so to speak as well as the few ones I am missing in my G2 collection I can't find them..... so it's a bit sad honestly but I keep trying and searching.....

I prefer to find a pony in a thrift store / car boot sales than on internet but lately it's impossible to find any G2s there!

I collect only G1 and by simply the design of the ponies. The ones I like visually and want to display.
Also, the ones I played with when I was a kid are naturally a part of my collection, as it would break my heart to sell them, even though there are some that could fetch some nice money..!
I'm not so keen on collecting by series, but I kinda gravitate towards getting the rainbow ponies, twinkle eyed ponies and the rainbow curls (even though I only have Ringlet..! They're prettyyy expensive...)
Then, I also have this little collection of custom baits, waiting for their transformation... happening maybe some time in the future..
I buy my ponies mostly in vintage shops, auctions and such. Back in the day I also bought directly from friends.
I guess it all comes down to sentimentality! In my case I feel there's no point to just try to "score" a perfect collection.
(Though, if I was super rich I think I would try to get them all!!)

I have a wishlist I use, and it's pretty much exclusively ponies I like the look of. I don't care how rare or valuable it is, if I don't like how it looks, it's not going in my collection. Though my mom loves collecting vintage stuff and always keeps an eye out for ponies when she goes thrifting, so I have ended up with a few ponies in my collection that I didn't realise I wanted until I saw them in person.
I've kind of taken a break for a bit from collecting, since I don't have anywhere to put all my ponies. I agree with everyone saying that it's no fun to keep them in boxes. I'm currently working on building a Billy bookcase which hopefully all my ponies will fit in. The exception to my current "no ponies" rule is Minty, since she has her own display space, so I'm still keeping an eye out for Minty stuff.
