Collecting Techniques
When I'm out shopping: It's ALL about the hunt for me. I love love LOVE to go pony hunting! (That's what we call the thrift shop/garage sale/antique store pony searches) My daughter and I make a game of it. I feel like a kid again when my daughter and I go Pony hunting. So it's really more about the fun of searching and the thrill of finding one! It's just a fun to go looking for those elusive ponies and then to discover one at a sale or thrift store!
And for the most part - we ALWAYS buy whatever ponies we have found. Even if they are doubles, even if they are baits. I think it's the adrenaline of the hunt that forces a purchase. After all - you don't go turkey hunting, track him through the woods, fire a gazilion shots at him, miss every time and then finally shoot your turkey and then decide "Oh he's too small to bother with" and leave him there in the field! Oh no! You pick him up, say to yourself, "Bullseye! We're having Turkey tonight!" Wrap him up, take him home, clean him up and have a fabulous dinner
Actually, I think it's more like more like Easter egg hunting... Only there's ponies in them eggs!! ... well ponies without the eggs, but ponies none the less lol
Um, online when I shop for ponies I choose the ones that are first discount and affordable, once again - now hunting for the bargin and looking to find the ones that I don't already have and that will complete a set, but I will pass up a pony that will complete a set for one that is harder to find for the same price. Online, I almost always purchase lots with at least 5 ponies in it. I do this because I HATE to pay shipping. I don't mind paying more for the pony, I just HATE to give all that money to the US Postal Service. They're just so dang expensive! And YES, there are some ponies I just don't even look at while online, but if I were out pony hunting at a thrift store I would buy them and those are the ponies that I don't really care for, like Seaponies... I never liked seaponies. In fact, there is only one sea pony I want and it's Celebrate from the G1 Birthday Party Pack. She's the ONLY seapony I ever look for.
I don't buy international ponies, they just seem so expensive! I only own one and it's an Italian Blossom AKA Lila.
I will say this, it's helped me to organize which ponies I wanted to buy online by printing out the G1 & G3 checklists. I haven't found a G2 checklist yet and I hardly have any G2 MLP stuff at all. That way I could look at my checklist and see what I needed to complete a set and then I can search them online. There is just so much more available online than in the stores. It does help to set some collecting goals for myself, it just makes the hobby more fun. Then Checking off which collections I've completed.
