I was just curious, as I have seen quite a few collectors who cut and style their G4s to make them more show~accurate. Personally, I like the haircuts if done well, but is it going to affect value down the road? I just made my first official G4 brushable purchase today... I got Twinkleshine (yay!) and she has already had a hair wetdown and restyle. I was thinking of trimming her forelock, BUT I'm torn... I don't plan to get rid of my G4s, but if circumstances came to pass that would require selling off my collection, I'd hate for them to not be desireable on account of not being 'factory original'.

You're assuming that the value will increase. Loose already effects the resale value.
If past on, the haircuts will be adored by the new owner.

Not really that the value will increase, of course out of the box already hurts their value... but I don't want my ponies to be potential bait fodder just because I wanted to make them look more like the show's depictions.

I was drooling over those two in your sales thread btw... :3

We are at the stage where there are so many of them around that I'd say cut away. The fact is, there are folk who are actual adult collectors during the last few generations of ponies... which means there are many that will be kept moc or mib as well as those who will have been taken out of their packaging and set on a shelf. G1 ponies were all loved by children first. They were not an item for adult collectors until those of us who cherished them as children grew up. It makes a big difference. I say cut their hair and enjoy them. :)

I can't speak for experienced collectors, but personally, I prefer a well-done trim and hairdo to factory curls (I make an exception for ringlet curls, though). I know, blasphemy, right? :p So I'd say it depends on preference. I doubt anyone would consider an honestly well-done haircut as bait, but maybe that's just me.

I am definitely pro-haircut. I HATE the way that the G4 ponies look in-box, especially Pinkie Pie. Pinkie Pie is supposed to have curly hair; Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash should have bangs... The foreheads on the toys look huge!

hmm

If the cut is done very well and made to look more like the cartoon character, I don't think it will change the value by much. Since cutting and styling G4s is becoming popular and the actual pony cuts are so different from on the show, it may even be preferable to some buyers. If I was concerned about value and a G4 pony is a htf one, seems like it'll be especially popular down the road, or is popular but has very few versions or one particularly preferred one, I'd keep that one as-is or buy one to keep in the box to feel less iffy about opening one of them.

There are so many different versions of each pony that I think there will be too many to go around and G4s will have lower resale value as time goes on.

Honestly I think that anyone who wants the mane six will already have them, and they will be coming out again, and again... and again, just like the core 7... so honestly I think everyone to themselves!

If you want a show accurate brushable, then go ahead! I think with this new gen, we're going to see a new G4 pony condition it-word: styled. Sales threads will read, "styled G4 brushables!" and buyers will know that they're getting the ones with show-accurate hair, and if that's their thing, they'll buy. If not, they'll look at unchanged ponies. No biggie! It's up to you.

I think hair cuts make the G4's more personable. I boil-permed my Pinkie Pie and cut all my other ponies' hair to be show accurate! :tongue2:

I cut My Twilight Sparkle's mane to make her more show-accurate. Even with older generations, as long as their manes aren't completely butchered, I don't mind buying second hand ponies with haircuts. I guess it just depends on the collector's preference. ;)

Personally, I would never cut a pony's hair.

That being said, I fully admit that I like a lot of the pics that people post who do cut the hair.

Just because I wouldn't do it, I would never tell another collector not to. It's their pony.

This^^. Well said.

I also like the cuts, because I think the G4's look horrible because they seem to have massive foreheads. Giving them the cuts brings out even more of their characteristics and actually makes them, them.

I bought my G4 Mane 6 with the intention of restyling their hair even before they arrived in the mail. The factory styling is just awful---obviously the factory just wanted to churn them out without too much fuss and figured children will just want to brush the hair anyway, so it didn't matter if it's 'accurate' or not.

But the minute I got them, I cut and rooted and curled/straightened/restyled them all:

For me, if I was a buyer, I'd want accurately hairstyled ponies and if I couldn't do that myself, I would definitely pay MORE for the better haired custom versions. ^^

I Agree  they are soooo cute when they have the right hair.

Aww, thank you, kittensquid-san! I just could NOT leave them all without bangs and just generic hairstyles!!! They would not stand for it! :laughs:

Yes, I sculpted the pets (aside from Angel Bunny and Winona, and Spike, though I don't know if he counts as a 'pet.'). I did add Winona's collar and bell to make her more accurate to the show, however.
I felt it so unfair that Fluttershy and Applejack got their correct pets, but the others all just had whatever. Opalescence! Owlysius! Gummy! Tank! I had to make them for their gals to play with!

I've actually been making a couple more for friends lately, who also wanted pets for their ponies! ^^

Thanks for liking the hairstyling and the pets! :hugs:

Personally, I have never cut their hair, however, I have found cheap tricks that can give them show-accurate hair WITHOUT cutting it. I have actually given my Applejack bangs whom came with none to begin with. I guess it depends on how crafty you're willing to be ;)
