Soo i just got Lily Lightly and her hair is T E R R I B L E ! the iridescent tinsel is all over the place, some strands are cut, it all easily rips out, her hair is all frizzy… id like to iron her hair first to see if i can somewhat save her (separating it from the tinsel so it doesn’t melt) but if i am not able to save her hair, how in tarnation can i rehair her? do i have to take her all apart? pls help :(

Also she’s supposed to light up and all that stuff, her dress is ALSO supposed to light up but when i got her the cables supposed to be running from her back into the dress were cut… does anyone know how to fix that?

I have a feeling her head would somehow have to be split open and the hair bit taken out somehow… I’ve never seen an open Lily Lightly before but @Ayako SweetHeart did post about a Lily Lightly without a horn before. If you want to see it as a reference for if you do manage to open her, here is the thread

I have a feeling she would have to be carefully be split open down the seams somehow… the fear of splitting open is something that has worried me at times about my own Lily too.

To open a My Pretty Pony who is also hard plastic, the Preservation Project says clay tools and this Barbie horse(?) says a table knife.

Does your Lily seem to have an open-ish seam anywhere?
I feel the first course of action would be to have her head off but I don’t know how you’d do that
If the horn comes out as easily as Ayako’s, maybe the horn has to come out first and then something inside to push out the hair? I don’t know I’m just theorising…

OHHHH WAIT THANKS YOURE ACTUALLY INTO SOMETHING LOL and WELL she does have a seam running all the way through her, in the middle like those examples you gave me, and although there’s not an open-ish seam anywhere, it may be a similar process…

I think I’m just gonna open her, and if i don't mess her up ill take pics and create the first guide to take her apart or something lol xD

I won’t take her apart right now/today, probably in a NEAR future (in one week prob) because i got some other things i want to do to my ponies, but i WILL do it

I remember taking my Lily Lightly out in the snow for photos last year and being so worried her seam down her middle will split open in the cold so that’s probably where that thinking came from :lolpony:

Good luck!

omg thanks! but now I’m curious… why would her seam split open in the cold? :0

When I was out in the snow with my ponies, the hair started to feel pretty brittle/crunchy but it didn’t break. Also I think I read somewhere here about the fridge/freezer being very good for helping break glue?

oooooHhh makes sense i guess it has to do with the materials and how they react to heat/cold WOW okay thank you ! now i’ll have that in mind B)

Ohhh well actually you could definitely iron the hair with the tinsel still in if youre careful and want to keep the tinsel. You would have to coat all the hair including tinsel with generous amounts of hair conditioner and straight/flat iron the hair in small sections while it's soaked with said conditioner. I would definitely do a test spot first but a lot of people restore tinsel this way. I just straighted out a lot of tinsel last week and it looks so much better!

wait actually??? does it not melt if done properly? WOW okay i definitely have to try that because the tinsel looks terrible on lily and its very brittle… i also have other ponies with super frizzy hair AND iridescent tinsel and since i dont feel like separating it all… i hope i don’t mess up all their tinsel lol thanks for letting me know this!

edit: but WAIT… are you referring to iridescent tinsel or the “metallic” type?

I have never tried heat on tinsel before either actually. I always heard heat + tinsel = bad so I’ve been too scared to try it. I’ve seen people do it though, I just don’t know what kind works and what doesn’t!

Continuing to follow to learn more

oh don’t worry i know for sure the metallic one works ! i literally ironed it on a princess luna i have and it did just fine, i did my research beforehand and i read that metallic is ok but not the iridescent one… but i guess ill try

Oh! Hm I honestly never pay much attention to what kind of tinsel it is. Its all plastic, so I think its worth a try! Even if just doing a small spot test

Edit: @rbnmngl Okay i checked and one of the ponies i ironed last week has iredescent tinsel so i think it should be fine but as always just do a spot test first!

sorry I don't have any seam opening advice, but personally I've straightened my princess tiffany and princess primrose's hair before and they have tinsel and they turned out fine! but I used tons of conditioner and pretty low heat, if you're worried try maybe not straightening the tinsel itself, but instead sectioning the hair to where the tinsel is surrounded by hair? ❤️ I hope your pony restoration goes well!

I actually customized her for a holiday swap on here years ago. I believe her horn will still light up when you press the button on her necklace along with her eyes to blink. The wire being cut was just to the dress. Now I can't remember what I did to rehair her but I am pretty sure that soft plastic strip holding the hair is removable and you can remove the hair and then glue it back down after you added new hair to it. I did not save the lights from the cape but I did make a new one for the custom I made so it would cover the side where the batteries go. Ah, so as long as the pony still has batteries inside then her horn should still light up even though the wires to the cape have been cut.

You're welcome. Like I said I customized her years ago , 10 actually so I'm not sure how her head can be removed to get access to the tail. I really don't recall gluing her back together if the body does come apart.

You might try getting one of those tools made for prying open laptops for internal work! They're made to be extra gentle and careful. And as has been suggested, use caution and do a spot test, but low heat on tinsel has always worked well for me. I've tamed many an unruly mane with stretched tinsel using my straightener!
