I can't explain it...does this happen to you?

Hi, all -

So, I am a pretty specific G1 collector...I only collect 82-86, the ones I had as a kid. So, please tell me why I absolutely CANNOT part with this Blueberry Baskets that I found at a flea market. I don't collect any of the Sweetberry ponies. It's not like there's a random Raspberry Jam or Boysenberry Pie hanging out here. She's probably lonely for her herd.

But...she's just so PRETTY to me! She's the perfect blue on blue, her blush is outstanding, her symbols are immaculate...she's dreamy. I have tried to put her up for sale, only to give in and keep her every time. She's not part of my "core" collection, but I don't think that I can ever give her up.

And then...there's white Tootsie. Oh, why must you be so white? Why must your mane be so shiny and lustrous? How are you so cute? Why do I even want you? You don't go with anything! You have my heart, you random pony, you.

And...finally...Baby Ribbon. Is it your fluorescent tone-on-tone highlights? Is it your lovely blue-ness? (I seem to have blue issues) Is it because you're the cutest ickle baby pony? Why must I have you, above all others? Yes, you're perfect. Yes, you're popular. But seriously, kid, why must you sit right next to my computer, always? Why do I love you so?

So...ahem. Does this happen to anyone else? Does a random pony, not of your collection focus, just grab you and not let go? I have to clarify, this is unlike a pony obsession, like my absolute craziness with Butterscotch...that's insanity. I MUST. HAVE. EVERY. ONE. I am talking about the one pony that you have in your collection that makes no sense, but you can't part with them. I can't be the only one, right?

Um...right? *looks around*

I have certain ponies I can't part with, that I feel attached to... Except unlike yours, they have their flaws. I can't part with them even if I get upgrades.

There's my flat foot Bluebelle with playwear and a crack in her foot (I have a minty one, and I still can't part with my flawed one), and then there's my Confetti with her age spots, but oh-so-silky hair! There's my rainbow pony Skydancer with a cut forelock and a marker stain on her body (which I bought as bait, but I cleaned her up). There's my Gusty with partially trimmed tail (and she was covered in pindot mold when I got her, but I totally cleaned her up, and sunfaded her!), and then there's my Sundance (which was sold as bait too, but I cleaned her up) with her super-frizzy tail (which I keep in a braid to hide the frizz) and slightly trimmed mane--she was my traveling pony for a while. I don't think I can part with any of these (for some reason, I'm attached to them!) even if I get upgrades.

Thats where the magic of collecting My Little Pony differs from collecting baseball cards or something. While With baseball cards you wanna only collect...lets say Bowman cards (thats a company that makes baseball cards, my big bro has a complete set or so of them),you can easily do that because, just like Upper Deck (another card company), they will make an Alex Rodriguz card too, but with MLP, there are some amazing ponies that just draw you in and inthrall you thats not in any of the sets you currently collect, and if you don't collect those ones too, you'll never have that one that caught your heart.I currently only have G3, G3.5, and G4 ponies, but i wish like crazy for some of the 80's ponies, even though thier not my "mane"(lol) groupe. As i see it, all ponies fit in with all other ponies, even a fakie. I know that i have a fakie who grabbed me by the heartstrings, he is yellow with a pink, blue, and yellow mane and tail, i have named him banana boat, and he has develpoed nicely in to an inventer/party animal.( at least thats how i like to see him :) ). And I think the other ponies in my collection like him just fine. :)

That happens to me. I'll be on My Little Wiki, browsing, and then I'll see a pony that I've known about, but wasn't on my wishlist that I suddenly desperately want. I'll stalk eBay and here until I see one for sale. When it's home, I'll go back to My Little Wiki and see another, and the whole thing starts again. :)

I can understand that does happen, when I started my collection I thought id only collect G1s. However as time went on I started collecting G3s then G4s. I totally give up. I cant stop the herd now. 00)

I know guess what up until now I have totally ignored petites and mummy charms..well that went out the window.:bonk: I need a pony 12 step program for sure. LOL:hiding:

Oh yes... I've caved once or twice (or numerous times!)

When I started collecting, I was avid that, like you, I only wanted certain early G1 sets; mostly sets I thought pretty, or ones with ponies I'd wanted as a kid. Man did that soon go out the window! My first cave were the collector ponies... then the first set of princess ponies... and it just went on from there (though I am still pretty stern about later sets past about '88/'89... I just can't go there!)

As far as individual ponies go though, Pretty Vision turned me into a sap! I got her in a hideously dirty bulk lot. The lot had a couple of ponies I really wanted, and my intention was to clean up the others and re-sell them to help pay for my recent bad pony habit expenditure. However Pretty Vision came up just that... a mess to an absolute vision... and I dunno... there's something about her. I hadn't really wanted the Brush 'n Grow set, but now I don't think I can let her go! :p

Um... Yes. That's how I went from only wanting childhoods (I had very few as a kid), and 82-85' to getting almost EVERYTHING. 00)

And, that's exactly how it started. Getting MINT ponies, but not ones I originally wanted.

yah i get like this but i am a completest I have to have one of every last gen one. Some i have have gotten better ones of but i am not giving some of mine up. i have too many memories with them to get rid of /upgrade them.

No, you aren't the only one!
My "Blueberry Baskets" is Locket.

Twinkle Eye Ponies aren't my favorite, nor did i have any As a kid
( Im mainly trying ti re-buy childhood ponies )and I never thought I
Would own any of them. Until I went to the MLP Fair this year!
Once I saw locket in person I fell in love! I think she is beyond
Gorgeous, and she now sits on my shelf of honor where all my favorite
Ponies are :)

My Mc Donalds G2 Sundance. When I first got her I didn't like her, but now I'm going to collect the rest of the G2 USA set.

There are MLPs like that for me... that draw me in and I have to have them even though they aren't part of the sets I actually collect (like the FiM Apple Jack - had to have her). But my weirdest one that I just can't part with? She's not even a pony. She's a fakie, and a bad one at that. She looks more like a donkey than a pony, and that's what I call her: Donkey. She's purple (and I really don't like purple, I find it a wishy washy colour that couldn't decide if it wanted to be violet or pink). She's everything I don't like about fakies... but there is no way I could EVER part with her. She's just kinda wormed her way in, and I love her. LMAO No rhyme or reason to it, she's not pretty, she's not cute... she's a dorky purple donkey. But she's MY dorky purple donkey. LOL

I've got a pony like that where most would consider a bait, or at the very least in great need of being restored. She's a Starflower I found at the flea market in the bottom of a box of toys covered in grime and sticky something or other. Her mane is cut up in a mohawk and she has the name "Emily" written in pen on her hindquarter. I washed her up, but there's only so much soap, water, and hair conditioner will do. I love this pony to pieces though, she's my adorable little butch pony, and I gave her the backstory that her girlfriend's name is Emily and that's why she has it tattooed on her rear-end, hehe. Even if I did get a minty Starflower, this girl is still one of my absolute favorites. She stands proudly with all the rest of the minty ponies.
:)

i was the same way. i was only going to collect those and those ponies. never any flutters or seaponies or internationals. now i just buy whatever XD

i figure i won't every have every pony so i buy what i want there and then. one day i can suddenly think 'my god, i want Sweet Scoops!' and the next day it might be as simple as wanting a Cotton Candy.

and i have a very hard time parting with any pony, bait or doubles, even if i have 5 of it. unless i buy it and decide it is for a friend, then i don't mind even if i don't have the pony myself.

I started out with collecting just the ponies i had as a child. But some where bought in lots, and i couldn't get it over my heart to get rid of the others...
And so my collection starts to grow...and grow...and grow...:allecto:
