This came up in another thread that I was on. GypsyUK and I were talking about our favorite ponies and such and I said I always thought Applejack was a boy when I was little and I didn't know why and she responded that AJ was a boy, but I have been on many collector sights that list AJ as a girl. Gypsy UK said that AJ was referred to as a he in one of her vintage books. I always thought that the fellas had feathered hooves and bigger stature. So I just wondered if someone could help clarify my confusion.

I'm pretty sure that Applejack's a girl, she was certainly a girl in Rescue From Midnight Castle, unless I'm remembering it completely wrong (which could be the case)

The pony is a girl for sure, but maybe the name "Jack" got people confused?! :D At least in Finland her name was on one comic translated as Omenapoika or something like that, which means "apple boy." I guess they got confused because Jack is not a girl's name, he he.. :p

Luckily she was usually called Omenainen, Appley or something.. :p

I always thought of Applejack as a boy myself, although she has been referred to as both male and female in UK pony literature... o_0

Aj's deeper voice in EfMC is another reason why many people think she's a guy.

To me she's always been very feminine:)

I think Apple Jack is a girl. She doesn't have those thick markings on the bottom of her legs that boy ponies have

I remember thinking she was a boy the first time I saw Midnight Castle because she had a kind of deeper husky voice....but I pretty quickly changed my mind that she was a girl...which may have had to do with me assigning EVERYTHING a female gender at that time, too...

Well, who's got her backcard? Wouldn't that solve the mystery?

I always assumed that all of the ponies were girls. That was until the boy ponies came out. Those I knew were boys, and reassured me that all the other ones were girls. :)

This thread makes me laugh.

As a child, Applejack was always a boy. Looking back now, I wonder - why did I think that?

AJ is a girl and i quote from Battle for Midenight Caslte

Megan says after AJ Falls off the bridge into the water below "I'll Save Her"

Well here is a quote from The Man in the Moon:
"Aw, shucks, apple sauce, it's easy," grinned Applejack as he crunched into yet another juicy apple.

He=male!!!!! Strange, huh?

Maybe the North American version was female and the UK version male?

I don't know about AJ in other countries, but, yup, in the US, she was definately intended to be a girl. She was a girl in the cartoons, and if I remember correctly, wasn't Lucky marketed on the pamphlets as the "First boy pony"? And it does make sense that since she had a baby in the UK that she was supposed to be a girl there too.

Hahahaha, all the times I've seen My Little Pony, I remember NEVER seeing make ponies?! My thought was "Where did all these ponies come from" Till after a few episodes I started to see some male ponies.

And I believe Applejack is deffinately a girl, I do not see in anyway how she could be a male.

I have always thought of her as a girl. As others have mentioned, the boy ponies are clearly portraied as such (with fuss around their hooves, bigger bodies or they're just refered to as "Dad" Sunbright etc.)

Unfortunatly Applejacks backcard doesn't say much: File:ApplejackBackcard.jpg - My Little Wiki (Looked it up on MyLittleWiki as I don't have her MOC myself)

When it comes to the litterature I don't think the writers back then were too well informed about the ponies (many probably didn't have anything to do with Hasbro at all), hence why there's ponies in books that doesn't exist otherwise and why they are sometimes refered to as males etc.
That's my theory anyway :p

Another classic example of how lack of consistent information (or being too lazy to do research) leads to people making stuff up, especially but not exclusively, kids.

Canonically Applejack is, and always has been, a girl.

I don't really get why people (and this includes writers who, admittedly, might not have been well informed) insist on complicating these kinds of things... It's a simple matter of observation and logic. Most ponies are girls, boys are clearly noted as boys, therefore until proof of the contrary, any given pony is a girl. That's it.
It would be one thing if it only applied to kids' play sessions, fan fiction, said UK literature and whatnot, but when people start putting their personal canon above the real thing indiscriminately when there is evidence as to what the truth is, it becomes bothersome.

Example: I like to imagine stories in an alternate universe where G3 Mistletoe is a guy, married to Stockings and have Merry Treats and Baby Stockings as their kids. But it would be terribly inconsiderate, not to mention confusing, of me to go around referring to Mistletoe as a guy, or spreading doubts about her gender. Granted, this is G3 we're talking about, but still, you get my point.

P.S.: Sorry if I sound harsh, it really isn't my intention.

Interesting... The backcard completely side steps any mention of Applejack's gender.
