Is It Just Me? Or Do People Think MLP Is Gold?

What do you think are people pricing to high on Ebay?
Ive seen people ask $99.00 $20 shipping for baby count down, a daddy Bouquet, and baby paws, and baby Whirly Twirl..
dose this seem to much?
G4 rainbow dash plush, pinkie pie plush, twilight plush, for $80 and $7 shipping.
you can get them at walmart right now for $12 I think.
G3 ponies with building playsets missing pieces, McD ponies, for $80 or more,
Ive seen a apple jack and sundance with frizzy hair, dirty, nasty, hair cuts for $35..
Are ponies really that popular?
are they really worth that much?

I think people what to regain the money they lost when they bought it in stores when they buy G3 and G3.5

Vintage people think they have gold because its vintage.

the new stuff everyone wants it so I'll jack up the price mahahahah!

Thats how I see it.

We are all needing money but its ridicules, rash, and down right greedy.

So what are your thoughts?

I think that there are some sellers on e-bay who overprice anything. But then again, some people buy it. I've way overpaid for a pony on e-bay because I wanted it RIGHT NOW, rather than waiting for it to come along for sale on the forums.

But something is only worth what people are willing to pay. There is a certain seller on e-bay who came out with a large amount of rare ponies and was asking over $1000 for some of them, definitely more than even Nirvana ponies usually sell for. A few have sold, but most still sit on e-bay and they have gradually dropped the price, although still outrageously high, IMO.

Sellers who don't know a lot about MLP will see, say, a really nice RD custom plush sell for hundreds and think they can make the same money with a Funrise RD plush. Or they'll see Mimic or Rapuzenl go for a lot and just assume that all G1s are worth a lot.

Prices do fluctuate with supply and demand, but there's always the few people who don't understand the market and just make wild guesses.

As to your first point... I always see that high shipping, see that it's usually a seller within the US, and just wonder how they expect me to believe that one pony costs that? I've actually asked a seller before why it was going to cost $7 to ship a baby pony in a padded envelope to me and they couldn't answer me. Greed is my answer. Ignorance could play a part too (people not knowing or thinking, like you said, they have gold cause it's vintage or it's MLP)...

The FIM phenomena is just that, people buying like madmen because they think they'll be able to make a buck on it, so the secondhand market is crazy overpriced, and people buy out the stores so you can't buy them at retail prices...

Ponies can't possibly be selling at those prices, I don't know who ends up buying some of the lots I see go for WAY too much, especially when there's nothing good in it, the ponies are in bad shape, shipping is far too high... but sometimes they sell. I can't explain it.

I know what you mean.... This has even stretched to places like flea markets, craigslist and yard sales. Before, I could pick up vintage ponies for like 50 cents, and now some old granny thinks she's got a gold mine with her box of baits from her kids/grand kids.

Yeah, before FiM struck it big, I was eyeballing a few G1s I wanted, and a decent one went for 10 dollars tops. Now I can't find any that I want that are in decent condition and within my budge. :\

It comes and goes. When the columbian ponies were popular we had so many sellers on ebay thinking all ponies were worth hundreds of dollars. And some people see popular ponies like Rapunzel sell for loads of money so then they figure their ponies are worth the same.

I guess people put their prices up for christmas aswell, hoping someone is desperate enough to grab the deal. And some sellers just don't know what they are doing and tries to sell their 'SUPER RARE VINTAGE CHERRY PONY' for 50$

Ponies are only worth what we pay for them. And that really changes from year to year. It just depends on what's popular at the moment and how many there are of them on ebay. When a pony shows up on ebay for the first time in 6 months then a lot of people might go after it and the price will be pushed up.

I remember seeing Mimic selling for 100-200$ a few years back, and then not too long ago she barely sold for 80$. It's weird. You just have to keep your pulse on the ponymarked to keep up with what's hot and what's not - Then you'll have an idea of how much the ponies are worth right now.

I think another thing with the holidays is sellers trying to cash in on collectors' family members. I'm sure almost all of us got ponies as gifts this year, and unless they were G4 they didn't come from, say, Walmart. As much as we know about ponies, prices, etc., our families and friends might not, so if they see Mimic go for $100 on ebay, they might feel ok paying close to that for Gusty. Same could go for new collectors trying to find ponies from their childhood. They haven't been part of the community long enough to know what's rare, sought after, etc., and what's not. They're taking advantage of people's ignorance.

I go on ebay quite often to check out what there is for baits and restores and some of the pricing on G1's is absolutely insane. I would love to rescue the few I see to restore them to their previous beauty (I've been eyeing a Skippity-Do forever), but I refuse to pay top dollar for a dirty, nasty pony, which might never be fully restorable. If I'm going to pay almost 20 bucks for a Skippity-Do, it's going to be in better condition than one that looks like it's had a roll in a dirt pile. :( It's very sad.

Greed. Ponies are wonderful, but they aren't everything. They're just plastic.

Yeah some people have no idea what any ponies are sometimes. Sometimes you can get deals other times you see a 10 dollar peachy and want to laugh out loud.

For shipping I don't know about USA pices (other than it is cheaper) but Canadian prices are very expensive. I usually have people wanting to buy from me, but when I give the cost of shipping they think I'm trying to scam them. They don't reply back or anything! It is just shipping s VERY expensive in Canada and I show them the Canada post site even showing the rates. Very frustrating >.< It costs about approx 5.19 CDN to ship one pony to USA and that price is the same for Canada too...go figure :(

I had to ship a couple of international packages this holiday season for the first time ever. One the post office miscalculated by almost (or over?) three bucks, and it was cheaper to send the second package to Canada. It's always more expensive to send internationally than domestically. one place I've never minded buying from is Canada. I know their system well. I can't buy from the UK, though.... they're almost double for everything than we are. :(

But as for a pony's worth.... not its weight in gold. Sorry. But like everything collectible... it's worth one amount to one person and something completely different to another. Next year, they may not be worth anything at all. Like me, I wish I had sold my hockey card collection when it was "the thing" to buy and sell and collect them, because they were worth a LOT of money back in the day. Now they aren't worth anything more than noisemakers on a kid's bike tires.

Australian shipping is off the chart, too! even domestic here is ridiculous! I often restrain from doing trades because it really just isn't worth it.. I pay for my shipping, which is more than the items I'm receiving are worth, plus I pay with my items as well... it's crazy. I don't mind UK shipping, they seem to be pretty cheap to here when I buy on ebay... But whether or not that's the true shipping cost I'm not sure, they don't seem to always have costs marked on packages. I don't think I've ever gotten anything from here from canada, maybe ebay once I think.. but that was ages ago now. I've noticed the rest of europe can be pretty exxy though!

Back on topic, lol... I once bought a tootsie for $10 incl. shipping, but she was just so sad-looking, and I could see she'd come up nicely with a good dose of TLC. She's perfect now, and I don't regret her one bit!

I second all of this! The prices on ponies fluctuate from year to year, month to month, etc. Just depends on what everybody is into at the time. (Example: look at the price that Christmas or winter ponies go for right before Christmas. Then look in the middle of summer.)

As insane as the Ebay prices are, don't let it bother you. There have always been people like that. If people don't buy their stuff, they'll eventually get the hint. XD

I've seen weird pricing with all sort of merchandise not just MLP. I'm always wondering how a book gets to $100 when it's not even rare or old yet. A few sales can't justify everybody asking that price.

For MLP the holiday season right now is one thing because the prices always peak.
Another thing might be the fees associated with the service. Ebay has gotten worse and worse about their rates. Then there are fees associated with the payment usually too. Shipping supplies and other costs also add on a little. $20 shipping seems high to me though unless it's international.
I could imagine charging a little over half of that for a single pony tops, and that's for a faster domestic shipping method.

I'll pay a little over retail for some newer ponies but, only for special occasions because I can't get the pony when I need it otherwise.

Oh I totally understand that our global mail system is terrible - prices from Australia or Netherlands to US are off the charts (as mentioned) - but I mean, I'm within the US, and I see other US sellers pricing shipping at $20, or $40 - and it's a single pony, or even a MIB pony... we have flat rate priority, and you want me to pay $20 for "economy"? Yeah, dream on...

But yes the prices fluctuate, I remember Mimic being worth a solid $50 before, and I was hesitant to pay that... now I get PCs on some things I've had forever and find out they've quadrupled in "value" - and I put that in quotes because value and worth can be different... worth to someone can also include emotions... and maybe sellers are pricing items high because they truly don't /want/ to sell it... ?

Ponies are gold to me!

Heh but really, I know how you feel. This flea market I go to sometimes has a stall where they want like $20 for common ponies...I want to rescue them so bad, but not for that much money. Wouldn't want to encourage them to keep pricing them so high. :/

Aw man, I know what you mean! I have a local vintage toy mall here and one booth always has ponies and they are always priced at $8 no matter what it is. Which has paid off since I found a Baby Sandcastle and a TE Bright Eyes in good condition, but even their bait condition ones are $8. It's very strange.
