Just Trying to Walk my Dog

A bit of a vent:

I have a reactive dog. He was not abused or beaten, he's just a dog that doesn't like every other dog. I actually walk him with my neighbor's dog, because he's likes her, but he is his own man and he decides who he likes and who he doesn't. As his owner, I am responsible for him and making sure that he's feeling safe and happy.

I am working with another dog trainer (I used to do animal handling training, before i left to pursue writing) and she is teaching me a lot about reactive dogs. I'd never had one before, so this is new and challenging. I'm learning a lot of it has to do with showing him that I will handle the situation and that it's not always about making your dog the "I love every body dog," because I am learning not every dog can be that dog. They all have their own personalities and it's more about working with your dog's personality to make it feel safe and confident that you will handle anything that comes their way.

This being said, I walk him on a leash. It's the law in our neighborhood and it's the safest thing for him and everyone else (including me) or so I thought-- turns out people in my neighborhood don't think the law applies to them. There are dogs off leash everywhere and I am a NERVOUS WRECK.

Here I am, trying to build my relationship and leadership role with him and I have people with their dogs running towards me while I'm screaming "HE'S NOT FRIENDLY!" They can't catch their dog or they WERE confident that it wouldn't just take off towards me, but now, here I am, TERRIFIED that I will have to break up a dog fight, beyond worried that my dog will get hurt, the other dog will get hurt, and that a human will get bit. Now, given that my dog was leashed and their dog wasn't, chances are they can't sue me or make me pay their vet bills--- but what about my vet bills if that happens? What if my hands-- which I use to type and paint and sculpt with are ruined? Because I had to pull dogs apart.

People who have "friendly" dogs and walk them off leash outside of a leash-free park are putting themselves, their dogs, myself, and my dog in danger and it is so scary. It doesn't matter how friendly a dog is, the other dogs might not be, and other people may be afraid of dogs. It's a law for a reason. Leash free parks exist so that dogs have a place to run free and backyards are great for that too. I know I used to walk my older dog off leash, she never wandered, but I would leash her the MOMENT I saw someone else, but the truth is, you don't always see that other person and I am -really- seeing that now.

I have debated on what to do for weeks. With the signs posted saying it's the law and the fine listed, I have started to honestly yell at people, lol. It's a horrible feeling, but they just stand there while I'm positioning myself between two dogs. I tell them it's the law and that they are putting me in danger and I"m going to call the police. Should I go to the station and make a complaint? Do you think the police will actually help me out? Add some stops to the park and around the neighborhood an issue some tickets or warnings? Anyone else have experience with this? A woman honestly yelled at me the other day saying "You're ruining it for everyone."

I hate all this confrontation and fear/anxiety, but I have to be able to walk him. He's a sled dog breed, he needs exercise and he has the same right to be out and in the park in the sunshine or under the shade of a tree as anyone else. I pay taxes too and we need to be able to walk in our neighborhood safely.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

People are being incredibly irresponsible not keeping their dogs on leads. I've worked with far too many ;friendly' dogs who suddenly attacked other dogs for no apparent reason (apparent to a human. I'm sure in dog terms, they felt quite vindicated in their actions). They are endangering you and your dogs and every other dog. And what if the free dog gets spooked and runs into traffic? it could be killed, cause a wreck, anything. And the owner is to blame. You aren't ruining it for anyone. Rules exist for a reason. In this case they are keeping dogs from harming others and it is incredibly important.

One of my pet peeves out here in the country is my neighbours who refuse to keep their dogs maintained. I've lost many pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits and even goats to these dogs. Allowed to roam at their leisure, they can be very dangerous and it angers me when people are so irresponsible.

Thanks so much for your reply and I completely agree. It's scary across the board. Dogs are unpredictable and it's sad when a friendly dog is put into a situation where it has reached it's limits and gets in trouble for it and it's not fair to owners who are being responsible.

I am looking into stopping in or calling the local police station. I'm just hoping they'll either stop by the park and drive through the neighborhood periodically to encourage people to put their dogs on leash. A couple warnings maybe just to scare them. The fine is listed as $2,000 on the signs for the neighborhood and the park/trail.

I dog walk part time and I am responsible for another person's dog and my own and I have to do something.

Ugh, that's a tough situation for sure! I hate when I'm walking my dog and other off-leash dogs run up to us. I just never know what could happen, is my dog going to feel threatened and attack, is this strange dog friendly or has he just gotten loose and might not be a friendly dog cause sometimes I don't always see the owner right away. I think people assume if their dog is social and friendly it's fine but that's still not responsible, someone else's dog may not be or something may happen to change your dog's typical behavior. Either way it's very irresponsible. The only thing I can suggest is for you to request the authorities actually start going around and fining or warning people and then maybe they'll start doing what they should be doing in the first place!

Thanks so much for responding! I agree. I'll have to go and at least ask and see if the authorities can/will do anything.

I used to love seeing friendly off leash dogs when I was younger, because I'm a dog lover, but I've got some friends now that are beyond terrified of dogs and I can't imagine what would happen if a dog ran up to them in the park. I also had an ex-boyfriend who was riding his bike when an off leash "friendly" dog ran up and bit him on the leg :/ You just never know. Dogs are individuals, like we are.

I'll go talk to the authorities and let you guys know what they say.

Thanks again!

I'd say that asking for a few polite warnings to be given (and an explanation of why the law exists, for everyone's safety, including the dogs) seems perfectly reasonable to me. As @evilbunnyfoofoo pointed out even friendly dogs who behave well towards others could end up getting hurt if they're not on a leash and run in to traffic or something horrible like that. Better to be safe than sorry, right?

I agree. Thank you. I appreciate the support. When that woman said I was "ruining it for everyone," I really started to doubt myself, but the law is with me on this one and safety is the most important thing. Thanks again!

Dogs are a lot like children. It takes 5 seconds to go from a delightful day to a horrible nightmare. They need constant guidance when out away from your influence. People think, "Oh my dog is fine, I'm right here!" Well, you can't be certain of any dog around you. Best to err on the safe side.
