For this tutorial I will be showing two ponies as examples. One is made with colored glitter, the other with clear iridescent glitter. Colored glitter is more brilliant, clear iridescent glitter will let your base color show through.
Step 1. I recommend that your custom should be mostly done. The raised painting will be delicate.
Step 2. Paint the base of your design. The color of your base is important. The color of your painted base should be similar to the color of the glitter you are using. If you use clear iridescent glitter you jewel will be the same color as your base.
Step 3. Neatly paint over your design with Mod Podge Outdoor.
Step 4. Sprinkle the glitter.
Step 5. Let the it sit for a couple of minutes.
Step 6. Lightly brush off any loose glitter. Push and scrape the glitter so that it is only on your design base. Keeping your design looking crisp. Let dry completely.
Step 8. Make your mixture. Mod Podge Outdoor is really thick you will need to dilute it with water. Mix it with a stick or the end of your paint brush to reduce bubbles. You need it thin enough to behave like a liquid but thick enough to manipulate with your paint brush tip. But you do not want it thick enough to leave lumps.
Step 9. Apply (paint) your thinned Mod Podge to your design one layer at a time. Let each layer dry before adding the next. You will know it is dry when it is clear and no longer milky.
Step 10. Keep applying until you have the thickness and look you want. It should at least cover the glitter smoothly. This works best with small designs.
Step 10-5. But if you make a bigger design you will need to layer smaller versions of your design. To give it a nice round mound. If you do not you raised painting will have a flat top. Your larger raised design can be evened out by painting thin layers of your mixture.
Step 11. When dry top your jewel with a clear gloss finish. Be careful not to paint over the edge. Let this cure for a few days.
