well after seeing thebeth make awesome MLP soaps, and sense im huge into making candles (its a good gift and a good seller around the local area im in for some reason :p) I have decided to make a MLP candle! hopefully by saterday i will have it all done!!!! ^_^

A few questions!!!

Does 20 a candle sound to expensive????

I am useing for the first mold a Yesterdaisy MLP that was given to me in really poor shape. the mane tail and inside of the legs will be all sculpted to fill it out so theres a base for the pony and hair.

Sense i do live in texas, I was wondering if anyone has bought candles on line or some where and had them shipped to you, was there any special packing done to prevent the candle from melting??? if not then should i worry about it????

Ideas for 3d symbols that can be easly sculpted???? I was thinking of sculpting small 3d symbols to cast in wax then slightly melt and attach to the desplay side of the candle and fuse the two together, I have done this with my piller candles and it was a huge hit.

Let me know your thoughts!!!!

I have bought candle's online and had them shipped... they packed them in packing peanut's and they didn't melt at all, just threw em in a box, and they're a great candle company so that would be my suggestion, since their candle's are packaged in glass mason jars :) hope this helps.

If it's a free standing pillar candle there is potentional for it to soften and distort it's shape while it's in the mailbox =(

This may seem silly, but if you are worry about melting, then maybe only ship them from November to April when it's cold and less likely to melt?

you could make a cast of the actual 3d symbol ponies...
I've also seen candle paint so you could paint some details in.

in terms of how much you should charge, the general rule of thumb is to figure out how much it costs you to make per candle and charge 3x that for retail and 2x that for wholesale. By that model, my soaps are a bit underpriced but that's ok.
but it's really what you feel comfortable with. you know the work you put in and what it should be worth :)

Hmm thats a good idea with the three d symbol ponies i just dont have any :( and oh paint for candles??? ill look into that later ^_^ hmm 20 is low balling it but i think its fair i just wanted to see if people would pay that. thanks!

I can make casts of my 3d pony symbols if you want. I have a bunch actually.

Sweet! Are you use the pony as the mold or are you making a mold from the pony? I got to make this right so I know what you have on mind XD

I think pony candles would be cool to see, especially after seeing how well thebeth's soaps turned out. But I have to say, there's no way I'd ever spend $20 on a single candle.

well it takes a lot of work to make the candle, make sure the wick is stright make sure theres no air bubbles make sure that it dosent fall in on its self due to a big air bubble, theres alot of things you have to do to make the candle perfect, and cost of wax and sents and all the other stuff needed to make the candle is not cheep. 20 dollars is CHEEP in reality it would be more like 30 for a mlp candle seeing as what all i have to do to make it happen and make sure it happens right, its not you pour the wax and walk away, not by far. its alot more work then that. even on Normal candles its not that easy. and im doing this with a latex mold so i have to make sure the latex will hold the shape due to the wight of the candle wax and all that jazz. sorry you feel that 20 is to expensive but thats as low as im willing to go for the effort and amount of work i have to put into just one candle.

oh that would be awesome!!! btw i still havent sent the dyes off sorry x.x im getting stuff sorted and blah stupid truck inspection this month is leaving me flat broke! x.x

I was curious when thebeth mentioned candle paint, so I looked it up on google. What I found is there's a medium you can mix into regular acrylic paint to paint on candles, so far I've seen Candle Painting Medium manufactured by both Delta and Deco Art. I did also find some acrylic paint specfically made for candles--it's manufactured by Delta and is called Candle and Soap Colors.

lol that's fine, you are most definitely allowed to charge whatever you want for your candles, and I'm sure you do put a lot of effort into making them. You asked people's opinions on pricing, and I was just stating that I, personally, would never spend that much on one. I am sure that there are plenty of people that would :) Good luck with your sales :)

My Grandma and I used to make candles, and we painted them with melted Crayola crayons :) It actually worked really well!
As far as pricing, I think $20 is plenty fair. I personally don't spend more than $10 at the very most for candles, though. Keep in mind I also won't spend more than $20 on jeans, $30 on shoes, etc. I don't buy anything name brand LOL I'm a total cheapskate!

don't worry about that yet, I still have to make your soap anyway.

actually if the candle was custom made, scented and all that just for me...an ooak candle I'd spend the money on it.

I've just talked to a friend that buys candles and she told me that $20.00 on a novelty candle is too much especially when a lot of people don't burn those types of candles. She said depending on the quality, and if there is a scent, she would pay $5.00 dollars for them, and no higher then that.

Thanks. and selling them at 5 dollars only covers the cost of the wax used and the sent used :/ Dosent account for time to make and makeing sure it dosent mess up @.@ ill sell the mess ups for 5 if there are any.

Poured the first one!!! I cant wait to see if it turns out or not ^^ ill take pics as soon as its compleatly dry and level and all that jazz if it turns out ok @.@ *fingers crossed* btw sense ALOT of people seem to think 20 is "way to overpriced" hows 15 dollars sound???
