:rainbow1:Summer Reading Swap:rainbow2:
:star:hosted by Darklys and Gingerbread:star:

Summer is almost officially here! Time to kick back on the porch with a lemonade and good book, or 3! Darklys had the idea of a summer reading swap which we mods thought would be fun to try, knowing we have many fellow bibliophiles. I'm happy to help organize this with them, in one of our first book swaps. Wanna join? Curl up in your favorite reading spot and see all the details below.

How's it work?

There are 3 levels of entry:
  • Level 1 - .50-5.00 - library lover/light on funds - you get a hand-written list mailed to you recommending 5 books that are in keeping with the interests you posted, no actual books will be sent. You provide the same for your swap partner. At the swapper's discretion they may also include a few stickers, or handmade bookmark or cute drawings.
  • Level 2 - 15.00-20.00 (not including shipping) - digital devotee - Provides a digital book(s) purchase for the format of the reader's choice (mobi, epub, etc.) or through their chosen e-book site. Swapper will also mail out a card or note informing partner of digital purchase and letting them know who their swapper was, as noted above they may include some small extras at their discretion. Book(s) should be within 20% of total swap amount. We can provide instructions for how to send books to folks who are international, where relevant.
  • Level 3 -15.00-20.00 (not including shipping) - old school smells - For people who like a hard-copy. Provides new or used book(s) based on swapee's noted preference (realizing that they might get more books if used). Swapper will include a card or note letting them know who their swapper is, and as noted above they may include some small extras at their discretion. Book(s) should be within 20% of total swap amount.
Readers can specify which genres they like to read, which topics are absolute lines (do not want this in my book), what sort of narration, protagonists, etc. they prefer, and other tidbits to help a partner hook them up with a good book :)

:star: Requirements to join:

Level 1:
  • Minimum 2 months of Active Membership at MLPTP. (Active means you've interacted on the forums with in the last 2 months prior to this post.)
  • Minimum of 50 posts.
Level 2 & 3:
  • Minimum 2 months of Active Membership at MLPTP. (Active means you've interacted on the forums with in the last 2 months prior to this post.)
  • Minimum of 50 posts.
  • Minimum 2 TP feedback OR TP feedback for 1 successful swaps in the past.
  • You must not have any Negative Feedback on your profile.

:star: MLPTP Rules and Swap Etiquette:
  • You are allowed up to 2 total swapping partners but you may choose multiple levels if desired. Example: I want to do (1) level 1 swap AND (1) level 3 swap.
  • We will make every effort to pair similar genre partners, books should be based on interest from your reader's "library card"--strive to make sure their books are tailored to them.
  • Remember to send a card and let your partner know who you are.
  • Level 3: Delivery confirmation (domestic) or receipt of sending (international) is required! This way we can account for any lost parcels.
  • Be sure to package your swap box for a safe secure delivery! This means using a sturdy box, packing tape, and protecting books from potential water damage if box gets wet. Make sure your labels are clear and legible.
  • *We understand that we have many generous members of the community who feel inclined to exceed the budget range when sending to their swap partner. However, participant feedback has led to the following caveat: Please ensure that when you prepare your swap box, that you refer to current market values for ALL of your items, and that you do your best to stay within the budget range. This means that even if the item cost you nothing (ie: you already had it in your possession), it still counts toward your total budget. We ask that you please limit any (entirely optional) over-spending to $10 over the swap limits listed above, in order to ensure that all swap participants give and receive equally, and that there is no cause for feelings of unfairness among swappers.
  • The MLPTP Swap rule of thumb is: Send something that you would be thrilled to receive yourself.

:star: Other Important Steps:
  1. Send your tracking number and/or proof of postage to the swap host by Sat 7/22.
  2. Once you've received your swap, you must post a thank you in the Show n Tell thread **here**. Photos are optional given the different levels however you are required to at least say a quick thank you so we know you've received your part of the swap :)
  3. If you have any concerns with ANYTHING you MUST contact Gingerbread ASAP. We will always work together to come to a fair and decisive conclusion.
Everyone who signs up and sends a package should be able to also receive a package in a timely manner. If for any reason you run into issues you must communicate with the swap host so we can work it out. Failure to ship by the required deadline or communicate issues in a timely manner may result in a negative feedback. We want to make sure the swap is fair and fun for all who participate.

What a cool idea!!

What about non fiction or Manga? :rolleyespony:
Yes, of course! All books are good books :) I put nonfiction on my fav. genres list.
Some of the content questions are more suited to fiction, but they also apply across to nonfiction. And you could always just add qualifiers to a list if you're unhappy with the list.
Sorry it is not comprehensive.

I assume, then, that we can send audio books to our dislexic/adhd friends? :D

heck yeah!
I am not very good at things, or I would have noted it ahead of time. <3
My wife prefers audio books because they listen at work. I gift them digital ones all the time. We are definitely not being book elitists (I don't think)

I was just thinking about how my bestie has ADHD/ASD and is very bookish, but she depends on audio books when her brain is not co-operating <3 I always feel the need to clarify stuff like this, cos my anxiety makes me afraid to stray from rules @_@

Well, you see, they let me co-sponser this thing, and I believe rules are meant to be broken, haha!
In honesty though, I am sure @Gingerbread would agree that audio books totally count.
I asked to set this up a while ago, and then I went through a depressive episode, so I was just pleased to be able to type something semi-coherent. All of the best parts of it were definitely Gingerbread. The spoons I didn't have, f'reals.

I think audio books are fine if they are requested, I would say that would still fall under the digital level. I don't know if we can expect anyone to track down those old binders of CDs for audiobooks circa 1998 LOL

and yes, you guys can feel free to elaborate or edit the questionnaire to suit you better. The world of literature is too broad to account for everything so it's more of a guide. We will try to pair readers appropriately but could be that you're looking into a new section of the bookstore for your partner, everyone will just do the best they can and who knows maybe you'll find a new genre for yourself ;) I've found new favorites shopping for others many times!

I hope people sign up soon.

Personally, I love shopping for people with disparate interests. It gets me into new stuff. :)

Can I post books I have to send out for only payment of the shipping costs? I don't want anything in return but if someone else can enjoy these books, that would be awesome. I don't have many books either. Or would this be best in the Freebies forum?

Don't worry, it's just a banner that pops up on your page. You can X it out and it will go away. The mods are just using your username first in bold to get your attention. I did the same thing, I was like wait I'm not hosting this! But then I realized it's the forum just letting me know about the fun stuff happening.

It does sound like a fun swap! I just don't read anything for myself, I just read to my son. I'm a very very slow reader when it's for myself.
