It's Propagation Day! :D

I've been propagating (pruning, harvesting, repopulating) succulents for about a year and a half now, usually twice a year, or whenever they get so tall that they start to fall over:

When that happens, I cut off the top rosette, harvest some of the leaves, and re-plant both the rosette and its base to keep growing. You can see how this gets out of control rather quickly with as many as I have now...

With the exception of 2 planters, everything you see in the first photo has been grown from a single succulent plant, and raised by me.

The purple ones (color varies over the year, brighter in summer and more green in winter, sometimes a little pink or orange!) are echeveria von nurnberg, and the maximum span of a blossom (or rosette) is about 4". Sometimes they grow into little "trees" with multiple branches as well.

I have a huge excess of propagated leaves that will survive in the mail if you are in the US and would like a bundle to try to grow yourself. Each leaf can become an entire plant with the right care. Just pay shipping and they're yours! Check out my post in the Freebies section.

Does anyone else here raise succulents, or perhaps started growing them as an accidental hobby, like I did? :ponylove:

I love succulents! I would love some of the purple, I've been wanting some. I have gotten so many hens and chicks to accidentally grow and spread. I'm heading to the freebies post now!

I have a couple, I think they are cute :D

The purple ones look so nice :D and look at those unicorn planters!
I got an adorable tiny bulbasaur pot as a gift a few years ago and decided a succulent would be perfect in it cause it would look like the bulb :) except it quickly outgrew the pot ^^; and after about 3 years it died (I am really not good with plants) so I’ve been afraid to get any more lol

I want a Bulbasaur planter! :O

Wow, lovely shades! I have terrible luck with plants. Maybe eventually I can get them to thrive under my care : P

Ah, my comment from your other thread should have gone here!

So a few years ago I found a small broken pot in the greenhouse and I really wanted to fix it and put a little plant in there. About a year later I got gifted one or two succulents. Since then I have so many now and a couple have lived indoors but soon it got too many from all the babies they had so now they live outside and in the greenhouse and on a cairn. I mainly put them in coconuts coconut shells after birds have eaten all the bird feed out of them because they’re easy to move about when I need to fix up the bird bath that they all live in

I did have a visual record of them from the first pot to all the many pots and coconuts but I’ve lost the earliest pictures of them now. I’ve had them flower too which always makes them turn into such a monster :lolpony:

I love their colors very much! I'm just always scared of trying to raise a succulent since i killed an Aloe years ago :( poor thing root-rotted, I didn't think I was watering it enough but I guess it was too much
Aww yeah that's what it sounds like (from my extremely limited knowledge). I really have almost no experience with plants other than this, but when I was researching how to best care for them, there were a lot of warnings about over-watering. It seems counter-intuitive, but mine have thrived after only being watered when absolutely bone dry--which for me is every 7-10 days.

Thank you! <3 The planters were a gift from a dear pony friend of mine. The not-green one was bright bubblegum pink when it arrived last summer, I'm hoping it'll turn that color again:

And the green one started out as basically what I referred to as Alien Flubber. I found the leaf on the floor of a friend's apt building and decided to see what would happen:

I absolutely do not have a green thumb by any means, I think most of what I manage with plants is Bob Ross style--"Happy accidents"

Haha the alien flubber looks like it grew great! Good job rescuing it from the floor ^_^

I’m a crazy plant lady. Succulents are my favourite plants. I was growing about ten jades from single rooted leaves for about six months. Then they all mysteriously died within a week or two. I have no idea what happened, but I was so sad.

I’d like to try again sometime, but I’ve been travelling so much for work it’s hard to tend to my jungle.

Oh gosh the whole progression was so weird! It started off as an ordinary, opaque leaf--my friend (who works at a plant nursery) was like "Huh, that looks like a succulent leaf. Weird." To which I said, "Think it'll grow? I only have purple ones." I stuck it in my purse and put it on some soil when I got home.

And then it turned transparent.

And then it grew fingers.

And then I started to get a little scared.

I'd love to see your plants! I'm sorry I can't send you any leaves--not allowed to mail them internationally. :(

Wow, I just love the color. I just started trying to grow succulents this year, didn’t go so well. I may need to get a few tips from you and a few leaves.
I have two, I’ll need to take picture. One looks like yours but with a hint a pink.

I am disappointed, I came into this thread expecting to see giant-man eating succulents with enough sass to power an entire nation. Jokes aside, they're very cute, I like the purple color.

Haha it grew fingers? I see why you called it an alien

I'm not sure what else I'd call those LOL maybe appendages?? ;)

I adopted another succulent a couple of days ago. Named it Egg.
The only other succulent out of the many that I named is Nessie

Time for an update! :)

Succulents are for sale!

I have dozens of these babies up for sale now in the effort to help my kitchen go from this:
