I noticed some fashion doll customizers using chalk pastels on their customs, but I hadn't seen it used on a pony custom yet. So, I decided to order some and try it out for myself. I'm pleasantly surprised with the results. I honestly didn't expect them to show up so well!

I decided almost immediately I wanted a cute space theme. I felt it appropriate for testing out soft pastels, plus it would blend well with the base (Pinkie Pie).

The paint job on the eyes and symbols are certainly not my proudest work. I'm pretty out of practice right now and it shows.

I decided to go with some yarn I dyed for the reroot. I want to say it was because it added to the soft, space theme or whatever but the real reason is that I just happened to have a bunch of acrylic yarn and leftover dyes already lying around.

Sorry about the subpar photos. I've said it before, but I'm a terrible photographer.

I use pastels on my pony's cheeks. The colours you used are so lovely, which pony did you use as a base?

Such a cute pose

So cute, great choice with that pose!

This is a really cool technique! What do you use to seal the pastels?
Also, that particular yarn seems like it would brush out nicely into Perfume Puff hair. I have been trying to find any yarn in my stash that has long enough fibers to do this but they're all too short! Though I guess this pony base is much much smaller than G1..

I just use a regular acrylic sealer between each coat of pastels. The yarn is also a pretty cheap acrylic yarn and it can definitely be used for perfume puff hair. I attempted to do a Perfume Puff-esque custom with a baity G1 Bowtie, and it did work, but as you brush it out, it does break apart some. I didn't consider that, so I had cut the hair before brushing it out. Now, she has a mohawk. :lolpony: But if you brush it out before cutting it, I'm sure it would work perfectly.

Thank you! I just need to find some yarn with long enough fibers that it will be long enough when brushed out... I don't think the stores would appreciate me picking apart the ends of all the yarn skeins, hahaha!

i love how pastels look! Kind of "high budget," but that could just be how you did it. Didn't know you could use it for blush...The closer i look at the eyes the better they look.

I love the colour palette, I never would have thought of using purple in the pupils.
