New to customs

I've been on the forum for over a year, but I've never been really active.

Ever since I found out about them, I have been interested in doing custom MLPs...anyway I have a couple ideas for my first attempts... I'd like your opinions.

The first is actually a tattoo of mine.

When I get better at customs, I would like to attempt this, squid legs included.

Please ignore the quality, it's a quick sketch and it was taken with a camera phone. XD
She has a gas mask on her butt and a simple bio-hazard symbol on her cheek. I want to do her a disturbingly bright hot pink, with annoyingly toxic bright green hair, and I want her ribbon a bright cyan.

I was wondering how to go about the curly hair...I haven't been to any sites in a long time, and I don't remember if you can buy hair curled or have to do it yourself. :|
Any suggestions on how to achieve my goal ?
Also, do they make a rit dye that would be bright enough ? I don't know how I feel about paint, it's always shinier than I like, and I'm too poor to afford an airbrush..
I'd love if I could achieve a hot hot pink on a sparkly pony...would it be possible ?

Sorry for so many noob questions, I just really don't want to mess up too bad !!

Wow those are really cool ideas! Customizing is so much fun! I don't know about dyes (I've been unable to find RIT dye in my wee Canadian town), but if you use acrylic paint in THIN coats and a makeup sponge to apply it, it can turn out well, and you can find many irritating colours :). You could do a top coat of sparkles for your second pony, and that might take away from the "shinyness". I hope this is at least a little helpful!! Have fun! ^_^

Those are some very neat ideas! I think I've actually seen one custom quite awhile back with tentacle legs...if you needed further ideas. I have no idea who might have done it but I'm sure someone here might know, its a very nifty idea!

Yes, I imagine you could buy hair already curled from somewhere...but I think you'd have better luck getting the color you wanted and such if you simply curled it yourself afterwards. I don't deal in re-rooting myself but I know I've seen lots of tutorials lurking about here and there.

Again, not familiar with dye...but I don't know if I've ever seen it in any 'neon' colors. Bright pink certainly, but neons tend to be in a class all their own so you'd probably be better off going the way of paint. There are ways to get a nice look with it and without an airbrush. As for the sparkle ponies, I know there are some in pink...but again for the neon I'm not sure if any of them would be to your liking. You could always try covering her in glitter? It has been done! I hear its very time intensive though.

Ponies are usually dyed with RIT, which (to my knowledge) isn't really available in any "melt your retina" neon bright colors... However, there are other fabric dyes that might come in those shades. Mind you, it would be a total experiment, but that's some of the fun of customizing!
I just did a quick search for "hot pink fabric dye..." Not really sure what I was looking for, but I found "Dharma Trading Co." a site for fabric art supplies.
This ---> Piñata Colors is a dye designed for non-porous materials, such as plastic. It can be painted, stamped and even used as a dye and "Senorita Magenta" is a pretty bright color.
Now that was just one search, I'm sure there are other products out there, you just have to find one you want to try.

Now there are also some paints you can use that are very thin and therefore easier to paint base coats with if either your dye job does not come out how you'd like, or you can't find a dye color you want. Even though you don't have an airbrush, airbrush paints are nice to brush on in lots of layers while you watch tv or something.
You can also find any twisted bright pink in acrylic colors, just be sure to water it down a lot, it makes things so much easier. It takes longer, but you can find that kind of paint in almost any color imaginable.

Now for your curls...
I think it would just be best to reroot and give the pony a perm. I haven't done it yet, but it seems easy enough, and most people yield gorgeous ringlet results.

I know you may not want to do this, but if you want a bright pink and sparkly pony, I might use the dollar tree fakie if you can get your hands on one.

That pink one in the back would look toxic with neon green hair!

oh here's an interesting product...
Spike-It Dip 'N Glow Plastic Lure Dye
it's used for those fake baits people use to catch fish with, but it's an intense pink... I wonder how that would work...

Just consider this if you choose to go the dye route...
while a full body repaint may seem like a tedious and long process, when using dyes you should wait much much longer. The dye can an probably will stain anything else it touches if it hasn't set properly, this could take weeks. I would dip your dyed pony in vinegar to set it, and then wash that thing as hard as you can before you do anything else with it. Then I might put it in a plastic bag to set for a while, make sure it's completely dry though, you don't want pony to get moldy! Certainly don't rehair her right away, you don't want your nice neon green to suddenly have an icky pink/green/mutant brown gradient!

oh yeah, one more thing!

If you don't like paint coming out shiny, you can certainly seal it! I used Testor's Dullcote spray sealer. It works like a dream. The matte finish also neutralizes the shine that paint can leave.

Thank for all the suggestions that really helped out !
That pink fakie would be gorgeous for what I want, actually. :D

And yeah, I know it's not the biohazard symbol I drew. I want one on there, I just...have a really hard time sketching biohazard, I'm not sure why. X+X

if you have trouble drawing the biohazard image on the pony freehand, I would trace it on to a piece of tissue paper on both sides of the paper - then retrace the image onto the pony by going over your lines. Then you'll have a perfect outline you can fill in! It makes things so much easier.

I was online last night and you can buy hair that is already curled. I imagine it would probably give you a more tousled, less structured look than doing a boil perm. Dollyhair.com has a lot of hair for ponies and seems to be a standard place to get it. Also, I noticed at Micheals today that they have glow-in-the-dark paint with all the other acrylic supplies. That could be fun for your project. Good luck!

If you draw her symbol in pencil on tissue paper (try regular paper?) and press it to her it will leave the pencil mark in reverse as a guide to paint over.

Good Luck!
