I've gone a little crazy lately with some lots on eBay, and one of my lots had this cute little flat foot Minty...

...and she sadly has quite a bit of tail rust, in addition to being pretty grubby. I have read through some tips for cleaning rusty ponies, but I was wondering if it was advisable in this particular pony's case to remove her head for a thorough cleaning?

I guess I just want some reassurance before I start such a big project.

Poor little pony....I just want her to look her best.

I guess it depends on the collector, I personally don't mind a head that turns. I prefer squeaky clean ponies over a glued head but everyone is different.

Heh, so have I. Wonder if we've butted heads on any?

Assuming her head is completely glued down and isn't halfway off already... I'd probably go the lazy route and try to just remove the visible rust first. If that doesn't work, then I'd go to the trouble of getting the head off.

Personally I'd try to loosen the glue around her neck with hot water if you can, and only use an exacto knife as a last resort if you haven't done it before, to get her head off. Either way her head will have to come off to really get rid of that rust, but I think she could be beautiful! :) Good luck!

Yeah, I do really like a clean, pristine pony, if at all possible. Thanks!

Ha, maybe we have! ;)

Off with her head! The first time I be-headed a pony to get at tail rust it was a Mimic. So, I feel your anxiety and raise you some. ;) As Jewel said, lots of hot water first before you resort to an exacto knife. Let us know if you need help.

You will be proud of yourself when it's accomplished and your pony will be much happier without a rusty butt. :lolpony:

I really do think she has potential! Considering she was a total surprise in a lot, she could be super cute! I think I will clean up the rest of the motley crew I've acquired, then give her a go. Thanks for the advice!

See, I knew I wasn't silly for thinking she was sad, being all grubby and rusty. I'll let y'all know if I encounter any problems - I'll take pics of the finished product!

If you happen to have a heat gun, they really can help to work the glue loose if hot water doesn't work. I love mine. I use a villainous laugh while I'm using it on my Ponies so it sounds like I'm torturing them.

I might need a new hobby. :rolleyespony:

I am commenting here because I love the title of this post :hysterical:

Minty will look lovely when you have finished, Flat foot Minty is a lovely pony.

As long as you're careful, you'll be fine. She's yucky and needs the cleaning!

I'm saving her for last out of my current batch of dirty ponies. And now I am reading the HECK out of the Preservation Project, thanks Far Dreamer!
