OUTRAGEOUS! Ponies & the Consumer Products Safety Commission Improvement Act

"The result, unless the law is modified, is that handmade children's products will no longer be legal in the US."

0.o That is just nuts! On so many levels.

Does this mean that I potentially can't sell my plush ponies/dolls/etc to US people? While they are originally meant for the adult collector I do make sure they are kid friendly just in case.

I sincerely hope Canada doesn't adopt any similar laws because if so I'm going to have to seriously rethink having kids. There is no way that I'm not going to make my kids handmade toys.

This is all absurd. There are way too many things that haven't been thought out thoroughly. Once the initial shock is over and the dust settles I'm sure things will be sorted out in a more proper fashion. I hope so anyways.

don't worry, we can make things for our own kids... we just can't sell/give them to other people's kids.

:frown: Oh this who mess is just terrible and stupid. It makes me want to cry. I'm getting a lump in my throat right now just thinking about how many valuable things not just ponies but everything else will be thrown out now. What a waste and so so sad.

I can't imagine someone just throwing away perfectly good toys like that in the trash. How sad. :frown:

Oh and as far as children putting toys in their mouths... yes it is natural for them to do that. That is why you give your children toys for their age that are supposed to be made safe and ok to be put in the mouth. That is the reason they have those warnings on toys that say what age the toy is safe for.. and up. And for example My Little Pony is made for children ages 3 and up. They were not made for young children to cut their teeth on that is what baby toys are for.

So... what that reasoning I wonder why those warnings are no longer "enough" for the government? Parents are given the information it is their responsibility to protect their children from danger.

I know what you're saying Sweetiebabyfizzy,
I don't just collect ponies. ponies are my biggest, and most extensive collection and I love them the most. But I have such a soft spot for all toys.

Thinking of all the wonderful vintage toy "history" that will end up in landfill's due to this is heartbreaking to me, and I really feel for the collectors out there that enjoyed browsing thifts and such for their collectible treasure's. :frown:

This affects so many business's and people. it's very sad. US folk who care about this, should write to your government offical's. Who know's what could happen if enough voters band together and speak up.

:nodno: me too! I'm so about to cry.... just stupid stupid. I'm going to the thrift stores and flea markets this weekend to see if any of this has started to take effect in my area...

this is nuts!
where do they come up with this stuff?
with all the horrible things going on in the world today and they are going to pick on old toys.
this is just plain stupid!

i went to alot of the goodwills closest to me and none of them had any toys just a few stuffed animals so i asked the cashier about it and theyve passed it with goodwill so far she also thought it was a bunch of bs

:frown::nodno: Oh NO!! Terrible... now I have to buy overpriced prices? Bull...

this is crazy! not just for collectors, but for all the poor boys and girl who will miss out as there familys may not be able to buy meny things as new, there gunna have to go without, not just that .

I know a lot of people that only had second hand toys when they were little because they couldn't afford new toys. I think this whole thing is silly. I can understand the restrictions but this is too far. There are only a small bunch of toys that is affected by this. >.<

This is soo dumb, growing up most all my toys were from Goodwill and other thrift stores, along with Garage Sales. The only time I got toys from the big stores were my B-Day and Christmas.

Also, I remember hearing that It was ok to still sell collectibles, but how would that work? Because literally, anything EVER produced, is considered collectible by SOMEONE. Like those people who collect PEZ dispencers, or Disney merchendise, or even fakie barbies. And yes, some of the collectors are going to be playing with them because they are kids! My Five year old niece Collects G3s and Littlest Petshops. 00)

I swear, this law will not last long. If they are soo worried about it, then just make a list of toys that are unsafe, because most of the toys are very safe.

Just because a couple of toys were bad doesn't mean all toys are bad. They might as well ban Imagination.

Foxtale it isn't Just toys. It's everything. Clothing, bedding, shoes, boots, outerwear anything made for a child.

you have to be able to prove the item is collectible, should it come into question.

supposedly, price + age + buyer intentions = circumstances

I went to the flea market and a value village thrift store today in the Baltimore area. Both of them were still selling toys and children's items... so I dunno?

yeah they're all still selling toys and childrens items around me.

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG, just reading this whole thread irritates me :(

I went to Goodwill yesterday and they still had a lot of toys. However, most of what they had seemed to be new (overstock from stores?) so maybe they stopped taking older/used toys?

Hey Spiff, I went to the Impact in Hatboro and yup ...they have no toys now. The toy department is now "electrical appliances".

I went to Goodwill today (the one where I've found ponies before) and they had a big sign saying so. The cashier explained to me that they "check" clothes and toys for stuff that could be dangerous, and if it is, they return it in the trucks to another store that will pretty much sell anything.

Head of the CPSC speaks out about the law and how her agency is weathering it's enforcement and problems with the law's broadness.
