Pony Collecting Question

I usually buy my ponies based on the symbols and if it identifies with my personality. Does anyone else collect ponies like this or am I the only one?

Share how you collect ponies. Is it due to the colors of their hair? Do you just collect Earth ponies or Pegasus ponies? I'd love to hear how other people collect their ponies. :smilepony:
 
I'd definitely say it has to do with the symbols. With g3's, the only ones I've bothered collecting and keeping permanently are the ones with symbols of things I love such as the fox glove flower, mushrooms and the cat-eye paisley pattern.

Some others I've collected, I think have to do with the balance of the volume of the hair style in comparison to the body/eye shapes and balance of complimenting colors.
...things you wouldn't normally think about... balance of aesthetics in details.
 
Every time I see the slogan on any old My Little Pony item that sais "Collect them all!" I always find myself thinking: "Im trying! Im trying!"
And that is basicly how I collect ponies :tongue:

I have tried sticking to one generation, to my favorites, to ponies of a certin colour that I find pleasing, to completing one set before I try for another but it has all failed >.< I try one of these things and then I find a beautiful shiny pony on Ebay that I dont have and I just have to get it (if I can afford it) no matter what I told myself that I was collecting at the moment.

I have come to the conclution that when it comes to ponies I have no willpower :winkpony:

Ah I like this topic! It's so interesting. (And lol Desert_Rose XD I think about that whenever I see it on toys I really love).

I collect by favorite character, show characters, accuracy, & plain interest/ones I find real cool or nice.
I only collect G4 so if it's been in the show & has an official toy, chances are I have it or want it. RD is my favorite pony so I tend to collect anything of hers. I also think the blind bags, & fashion ponies are neat so I try to collect as many fashion ones as Ican afford, & the blind bags I like. I really drop all spendable cash I have on funko products, & plushes. Love plushes, love the accuracy of the funko figures.
Lastly, I really LOVE the sets. Especially the ones based on things in the show (like the balloon, train & barn). It's the kid in me that sees these & wants to immediately open them to play with. Which is exactly what I do :p
 
For me, it depends a lot on the gen, but it's typically the poses and colours that get my attention first. If there's a pony that I like the colours of, and it has a variant in a pose that I love, then it's a definite must-have for me. G4s are less flexible in that they only have 2 poses, so I effectively only go for the colours on those. The only ponies that I'm actually drawn to the symbols on are G1 TAFs and MGRs. I don't even care about the cutie mark unless it's one I don't like (for example, G2 Honey's carrot, which has left her teetering on the fence between my want/"donotwant" lists, despite liking her colours). For me, it's about how the pony looks overall.
 
lately I've been leaning toward buying older beat up Ponies to restore. I keep thinking someone loved them, they must be lonely. :satisfied:

Anyhoo, I fix them up, and come Christmas I'll be putting them in stockings for disadvantaged children here here my area. Last year I did it and one little boy asked if he could give back his 'girl stocking' so he could get one with Ponies! I was so tickled!

As for myself and what I keep... mainly babies. Any babies, even fakies. I've set up a little village constisting of the many different playsets and filled it with babies and a few mommies as caretakers. It just makes my day to see a town full of playing Ponies.
 
I'm... not even sure how I collect them. XD;; I just go for certain ones because I like their name/colours/symbols/pose and that's it. Like Baby Liquorice, I had to have her because I think liquorice all-sorts are pretty (and tasty, hehe). And Merriweather is purple, which is my favourite colour, and I love her pretty rainbows! I mostly go for TAF style ponies where I can, or ones which are different and funky, like the Glow'n'Show G1s. Of course, many others have slipped in who don't fit that but what can you do when a pony shows up at your door and says "can I stay?" I can be a touch picky if the symbol is something I don't like, but I have a friend who'll rehome any pony I don't want so no pony goes unloved.
 
I go to my little wiki, click on random page and then keep doing so until I find a set of ponies that look REAAAALLLLLY pretty or do something REAAAALLLY cool...
 
I usually lean towards ponies with meaningful symbols. There are some ponies I have no desire to add to my collection because of their symbols. The neon colors are kind of a turn off too. So color and symbol are my main focuses.
 
It's mostly about colour for me, the pony must speak to your heart in some way or you wouldn't have that overwhelming urge to hold it close and keep it safe:smilepony:
I started off just wanting baby G1s, but I'm starting to think that maybe those babies would like to have their moms close by........ and maybe even their dads if those were available............and siblings! Don't forget about those either:LOL:
 
I want to collect more G1s from the cartoon. And recently I got into G4s, but I really like the CMC. I think I will focus on CMC items.
 
I've only recently started collecting (not counting my childhood collection, which I hope to soon recover), and I've found that I gravitate toward dessert-related ponies, haha. I must be a piggy. But yeah, they always are almost always food-related.

Great thread! For me it's all about sparkle sparkle sparkle! So far I only have G1 and G4 ponies in my collections. I love the glitter ponies, the TE ponies, the princess ponies, and the ones with glitter symbols. There are lots of awesome G4 glitterised ponies as well. I love the blind bag glitter ponies. I really like bright colors too! Ponies are just awesome :)
 
I usually collect ponies based on their colors.
I especially like colorful ponies the best, but if the colors generally go together, I like them all the same.
I don't really have any body type preferences, although I do love pegasi, or cutie mark preferences.
Sometimes I also like collecting G3s that are considered harder to find. :)
 
Hmm... I guess for me it depends on my mood, or what I'm into at any given moment. Usually in crazy roundabout ways that make no sense. :tongue: For example... Wanting Peach Blossom (both) for a while because of Kung Fu Panda (has a fairly significant peach tree in blossom throughout most of the movie).

Another thing I do often is make up characters for certain ponies, and I end up wanting them because of that.

I've also started building a Kathleen Barr-voiced army, because I just love the sound of her voice.

Other than that, there are a few thematic mainstays, such as striking color palettes or colors that complement each other, white ponies, and winter ponies (I WILL have all of the G3 winter ponies someday, HA).

I today wish me more sense make.

I aim for ponies with poses that I like, especially ones that make them look sweet or shy or some cheesy thing like that, or colors that I love, or characters I especially like from episodes or movies, but what actually ends up happening is I collect almost any ponies I don't have and don't think are over priced. Maybe I collect ponies I would rather be than who I am. I'm sure that sounds silly.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention if they're dressed in something cute, I instantly get a stupid grin and grabby hands!
