So I get some pretty filthy ponies when I go thrifting. A majority of the time they need a good cleaning and hair styling. I usually take their heads off to do this because I find that if I don't they fill up with water. Should I avoid taking their heads off? Should I glue them back on afterwards? As of now I just kind of pop their heads back in place. Is this ok from a collector's perspective? Is it just a preference thing? I want to know your opinions.

I don't really mind when heads are taken off for cleaning, as long as no damage is done to the pony. I don't really think most others would mind either, so long as it was for the sake of cleaning. I've glued a few back on, but it's probably best to just leave the head unsealed in case you need to clean said pony out again someday.

I don't mind, I'd rather have a clean pony.

It would be different story if the pony got no head at all ;) but I can deal with the fact that the head is not sealed cause proper cleaning.

I do as many of you - open them up and clean them if they have mold, rust or smell really bad. :)
Then I just pop the head back on, and display them.

The preference over this really depends on the collector. When I'm cleaning ponies I generally don't break the neck seal. However, if I find the pony has issues that require a more thorough cleaning, then I'm taking her apart. I don't see the point of preserving the "factory" state of the pony if other factors (rust, mold) are causing damage.

I think its a 50/50 for me most of my ponies. I popped off the head and cleaned them thoroughly but there are some I never got around to cleaning so I just did a regular cleaning for them.

I almost always pop the heads off to check for mold and rust and put them back on (no glue or anything)
I especially do it with Sea Ponies but I find their heads are glued on better than the average pony

I don't mind their heads being loose, in fact I tend to prefer it. The only time I can really see it being an issue is on rare alternate hair colored ponies, where the neck seal being broken calls into question whether or not they've been rehaired.

I used to (way, way back when) only took the heads off to thoroughly clean ponies that obviously needed it. But after coming across several mint outside looking ponies that were really funky inside, I now pop the head off of nearly every pony and give them a through cleaning inside and out. (The obvious exception being ones like the peekaboo or ballerina ponies whose heads are near impossible to get off and back on without major damage.) Those get periodically squeezed/ spun and placed tail down in a coffee cup to dry for a few weeks.

I then leave them loose (unless I had to resort to cutting the neck plug to get the head off a dirty pony, those I leave open to dry for a week or so before gluing the head back on.)

A lot of the ponies I receive are filthy, so I have to de-head most of them by necessity. If the pony only has surface dirt though, I'll give her a scrub and leave her to drain tail-side down so she won't get full of water. Some people want factory sealed ponies, but I like it when they can turn their heads to look around! :]
