Hi
I was wondering if anyone has tried using Crayola Air-Dry Clay for sculpting customs? I want to know if it will work for molding hair and horns.

Please let me know
thank you

I used it once. I wasn't all that impressed but it will work. It just dries out really fast and I'm not sure how "long term" it is.

Once it's dry it's really fragile. If you're wanting to go the air-dry route, try Apoxie Sculpt. That stuff is a lot stronger.

One of the big problems with the Crayola stuff (or any other air dry paper mache material) is that is shrinks as it dries. You'll end up having to reattach it to the pony with super glue of something similar once it dries completely. That probably means internal support armatures would be a bad idea -- the clay would just crack off the wire as it dries. Also, if it gets wet it will start to break down. And it was really hard to make a smooth surface. And it deforms under its own weight on large pieces while it's drying. Also, there is NO WAY you could use up all 2.5 lbs of the Crayola before the carton dries out on you if you're just making horns and whatnot.

Yikes, this sounds completely negative, but I do speak from experience. It was good for practice sculpting, but I wouldn't use it on a pony I wanted to sell or give to someone else. If I could go back in time seven years, I'd have bought something else to do Plummy's legs.

I think I remember Apoxie Sculpt being expensive. I bought it once, but never used it. The Crayola stuff will be cheaper, but IMHO it's not worth it due to how it will work out long-term. :)

In my experience, the absolute best thing to do any protrusions is most definitely Apoxie Sculpt. I have used it all, and tried the cheaper stuff, but you just can't achieve the same things with those more economical sculpting materias as you can with Apoxie Sculpt.

To Kar: MAN! I am working on a Snail Pony myself!!! We'll have to compare and contrast!!
