Quick question about "balding" ponies...

I'm sure we've all had this before. Those strands of hair on a pony's mane or tail that are WAY longer than they should be, for whatever reasons.

What is the best way to deal with them? I usually cut them off, but I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't do that, I can't remember why, though.

I usually give them a trim if it's just a few strands that are too long.

I trim them too. The hair is easier to work with when heat straightening (if needed) if it's all closer to the same length.

Finding them with a strand or two hanging down is normal. I'll clip it because it doesn't look that good on display, also as Skeen says it's easier to groom them if the hair doesn't have a little hanging bit.

But- sometimes mains got rooted a little uneven, or half the tail is shorter. Sometimes this is caused be someone reinserting a tail, or trimming a main but sometimes it's original to the pony- the tail was put in crooked, or rooted a little off from the factory. :) That sort of thing I leave be.

If they're really shedding, and gentle brushing seems to pull pieces out, try not to brush or handle them. I've seen Gypsy unicorns with this problem. poorly haired like that- one plug after another coming out. (one can kind of correct this problem too, although it involves removing the head.) but a little strand, I don't see a reason to not trim it. :)

Yeah, it was like the hair wasn't looped/woven properly inside her head.... I've seen a couple 83' ponies with that problem, not to the degree I've seen it in a couple Gypsys though!

I see the tail issue a lot with G1s... I only have about 10 G1s and I think 3 or 4 of mine have the uneven tail. It doesn't really look bad or anything, you can't even notice unless you're brushing them and then it's really obvious. It's the way that stupid metal clamp sits, it's too wide to really fit properly, especially in the babies. I'm tempted to just replace all of mine.

I replace almost all of mine with a nylon washer and a zip tie. Sits evenly and no rust issues.
