Hey all, I hope this is the right place to ask this, but what is fandom consensus (and maybe more importantly Hasbro consensus) on artists who make molds of G1s and do customized resin casts? It seems to me to be pushing the bounds of fair use, but I am not a lawyer and I feel like a lot of artists on instagram do it and don't suffer any blow back.

I'm not planning to start bootlegging ponies or anything, I was mostly thinking about it because I was thinking about a custom alicorn I want to make and I was thinking about doing a silicone mold of the wings so that I wouldn't have to behead a unicorn and a pegasus and end up with a spare earth pony.

As far as I know, Hasbro sold the moulds of the G1 ponies many years ago and there’s also HQG1C ponies and there’s no problem with it? I think because the G1 ponies are past their time (as in, moved onto new generations) that it wouldn’t worry much with the mould copyright anymore? I have no idea about legal things so there are people here probably better suited to answering this

HQG1C sells pony moulds for customising and also their own ponies. If there was laws around using the moulds, they might have been shut down years ago for it?

EDIT:
I think with mould making for anything if it’s a personal project that you’re not trying to make money from it should be fine. Besides, it’s your own personal artwork and since it’s your own personal thing, you don’t need to chase up any permission or anything. I hope that makes sense  You don’t need to worry about permission to make moulds from your own ponies!

Oh, that's interesting! I didn't know Hasbro sold them themselves. That does change things. I was just thinking about how if you tried that with a Breyer the community would eat you alive.

Yep, they sold them and that’s how there’s the nirvana ponies! :Flutter:

Also, like @starscout says, less ponies are used for customs too when there’s moulds. I’ve seen some pretty cool resin ponies when I’ve looked on Google images. It’s amazing what moulds can create

Good luck with your project! :satisfied:

Soul cookies on Facebook and Etsy makes custom resin ponies. I have two of hers and love them. I think she made some things for the Canadian pony meet, too. There are drawbacks to resin, but overall I think it’s great since it’s very versatile and doesn’t use bait ponies. The sparkles she can put in a translucent resin! So much fun!

Yes! I follow Soul Cookies too. There's also German artist on Insta whose name I'd have to search for who makes really lovely resin sea ponies.
